Political Geography of Nationalism in Sri Lanka
(For South Bank University Students)
Dr. Shantha K. Hennayake Duration: 30 Contact Hours
Department of Geography Time 9.00-12.00 on Thursdays
University of Peradeniya The objective of the course is to critically study the political geography of nationalist politics in Sri Lanka. There is a very close relationship between geography and nationalist politics: nationalist politics is intrinsically geographical. Yet geography of nationalism has not yet received adequate attention. Since 1970s increasing number of geographers have been researching into nationalist politics in many parts of the world. In Sri Lanka, the trend started in the 1980s. The course is divided into three sections
  • Introduction (3 hours)
  • Concepts and theories ( 6 hours)
  • Nationalism in Sri Lanka. (21 hours) I. Introduction
  • Definitional introduction to Geography, politics, political geography nationalism
  • Relationship between geography and nationalism

The weather is tropical - bright and hot for most part. Rains come in two main monsoons that originate in the Indian Ocean. The country has specific climatic zones determined by ranges of high mountains that run in north-south direction in the center of the island. The larger geographical area, fed by the north-east monsoon stays hot and dry for long months of the year, while the west and parts of the south of Sri Lanka has a primarily wet and humid climate.
From sea level to 7000-foot high national parks, the country boasts of myriad geographical and climatic zones. From the coconut palm fringed beaches of the west coast to lush rainforests of Ratnapura (2 hours from Colombo) to the stunning mountain scenery of Haputale (5 hours from Colombo) to the arid, scrub jungles of Yala (7 hours from Colombo) - a traveller in the country will never bore of the constantly changing patterns of the countryside. It is easy to imagine, when travelling across Sri Lanka, why Marco Polo called it the finest island of its size in the world. The country is six hours ahead of GMT.

A cross section of this 1:10,000 topographic map is shown below. Compare the topo colors and symbols with the land use labels on the cross section. The elevation in the Lowlands vary from 32 to 6.6 meters or 105 to 22 feet. In contrast, in the Highlands the elevations vary from 700 to below 600 meters, or 2,297 to 1,969 feet. In Asia, rice is life . Over 90 percent of the world's rice is produced in this region. Rice accounts for up to half of Asia's farm incomes and makes up nearly 80 percent of people's daily calories. Over 140,000 different varieties of rice almost all of which are farmer-saved seeds, not store bought are grown by small-scale farmers. Look at a moving relief model of the valley in which rice is cultivated.

cultivation occurs in low-lying areas that can be irrigated.
irrigation: rice terraces are used to control water flow and the edge of the fields are used as paths.

    GEOGRAPHY
Sri Lanka is shaped like a teardrop that falls from the southern end of India. It’s just 353km long from North to South, and only 183km at its widest point. Its area of 66,000 sq km is about the same as that of Ireland or Tasmania, in Australia.
The central hill country rises a little south of the centre of the island and is surrounded by a coastal plain. The flat north central and northern plain extends from the hill country all the way to the northern tip of the island; this region is much drier than the rest of the island. The best beaches are on the southwest, south and east coasts.
The highest point in the island is in the spectacularly beautiful hill country region, named Piduratalagala it rises (2524m) above sea level and tops Nuwara Eliya. Adam’s Peak, at 2224m, is far better known and much more spectacular. The Mahaweli Ganga, Sri Lanka’s longest river has its source close to Adam’s Peak and runs into the sea at Trincomalee. In the northwest of the country Mannar Island, joined to the mainland by a bridge, is almost connected to Rameswaram in southern India by the long chain of sandbanks and islets called Adam’s Bridge.

In northern half of island, topography falls away to rolling plain, relieved only by isolated ridges. Rivers extend radially from central massif to coast; longest Mahaweli Ganga (860 kilometers), which flows in northeasterly direction. About 40 percent of island forested. Coastline regular but indented by numerous lagoons and marked by sandy beaches. Climate: Data as of October 1988
