Monuments at the Malwatta Vihara Complex, Kandy Kandy, inscribed on the World Heritage List , is remarkable for its beautiful natural setting and its palace buildings, shrines and British period buildings, which lend it a distinctive character. Mainly of single-storey construction in wood, brick and stucco with graceful overhanging tiled roofs in the distinctive Kandy style, most of these buildings date from the time of the Sinhara kings. Through continuous occupation of these buildings, many inappropriate additions and alterations had been carried out by the occupants. CCF, the national institution in charge, has performed conservation work on one of the wings of the Alms Hall and five temples. The objective of the UNESCO/Japan Trust Fund project was to preserve fourteen piests' dwellings and four other religious structures. Thus, measured drawings were prepared and photographs taken so that the conservators can understand the additions and alterations carried out in the past. Conservation and restoration work was successfully carried out by skilled local craftsmen under the supervision of the experts of CCF.

Sri Lanka - Ancient Legends and Chronicles , ch. 1). The Sinhalese gradually absorbed a wide variety of castes or tribal groups from the island and from southern India during the last 2,500 years. The Buddhist religion reinforces the solidarity of the Sinhalese as an ethnic community. In 1988 approximately 93 percent of the Sinhala speakers were Buddhists, and 99.5 percent of the Buddhists in Sri Lanka spoke Sinhala. The most popular Sinhalese folklore, literature, and rituals teach children from an early age the uniqueness of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, the long relationship between Buddhism and the culture and politics of the island, and the importance of preserving this fragile cultural inheritance. Buddhist monks are accorded great respect and participate in services at the notable events in people's lives. To become a monk is a highly valued career goal for many young men. The neighboring Buddhist monastery or shrine is the center of cultural life for Sinhalese villagers (see Sri Lanka - Buddhism , this ch.).

The Dutch Period Attempts by Kandy to enlist Dutch help in expelling the Portuguese only resulted in the substitution of one European power for another. By 1658, 153 years after the first Portuguese contact, the Dutch had taken control over the costal areas of the Island. During their 140-year-rule the Dutch, like Portuguese, were involved in repeated unsuccessful attempts to bring Kandy under their control. The Dutch were much more interested in trade and profits than the Portuguese, who spent a lot of efforts spreading their religion and extending their physical control. The British Period The French revolution resulted in a major shake-up among the European powers and in 1796 the Dutch were easily supplanted by the British, who in 1815 also managed to win control of the kingdom of Kandy becoming the first European power to rule the whole island. But in 1802, Sri Lanka became a Crown Colony and in 1818 a unified administration for the island was set up. Soon the country was dotted with coffee, cinnamon and coconut plantations and a network of roads and railways was built to handle this new economic activity. English became the official language, and is still widely spoken.

Tuesday, July 29, 2003 By Sara Pipher, E/The Environmental Magazine
Elephants have been a cherished part of Sri Lankan culture since ancient times, and their often heroic images decorate Buddhist and Hindu temples countrywide. At the revered Temple of the Tooth in Kandi, antique elephant tusks adorn the main shrine. Children eat Elephant House ice cream and wash it down with Elephant Brand soft drinks. Yet despite their omnipresence in Sri Lankan society, elephants are on shaky ground, as their habitat and lives are threatened by development. And increasingly, rural villagers, dependent upon their crops for survival and income, kill adult elephants that stray into their farmlands to feed. They shoot the trespassing animals, or chase them with fire, sometimes leaving them alive but badly burned. Often the victims are mothers of infants who in turn are left alone and defenseless. Centuries ago, elephants were property of the royals and killing one was a serious offense. Clearly, the relationship between elephants and the people of Sri Lanka has become more complicated. Elephants patrol their diminishing habitat in search of sustenance. Farmers believe they must protect their homes at any cost. In a dance that is played out worldwide, environmental concerns take second stage to the struggle for survival.

And even if I were reborn only as a fly or an ant, I would still be happy so long as I knew I would come back to live here in the forest." - Uru Warige Tissahamy 97-year old elder Wanniyala-Aetto wisdomkeeper The Wanniyala-Aetto ("forest beings") are the indigenous people of Sri Lanka, the beautiful island nation in the Indian Ocean. Known as "Veddahs" in Sri Lanka's main language, Sinhalese, these gentle hunter-gatherers have lived in a sustainable relationship to their tropical forest environment for the past eighteen thousand years. Having survived 2,500 years of settlement of their island, first by Sinhalese and later by Tamil migrants from India, five centuries of Portuguese, Dutch and British colonisation, and two world wars - the Wanniyla-Aetto were evicted from what was left of their ancestral forests by the Government of Sri Lanka to make way for the Maduru Oya National Park in 1983. Ironically, this Park was set up as a wildlife conservation area under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), WWF International - World Wide Fund for Nature, and IUCN - the World Conservation Union who have since lobbied for the Wanniyala-Aetto's return.

Sri lanka cultural tourism
An article giving an overview about traveling in Sri Lanka, how to get there and some best places to visit.
The sites and sounds of Srilanka are enchanting. Its many island destinations offer golden sandy beaches, hilly retreats and forests in a tasteful blend of history, colours and culture. One such place is Dambulla where Adventure Travel and Ecotourism Conference was held in February 2001 which hosted professionals from the industry with expertise in ecological and adventure segments of tourism. The main attraction there is the ancient rock temple that has been standing there since 100 BC and its caves, where the exiled kind from Anuradphapura took refuge. Located amidst lush forests and on the shores of the Kandalama tank (a seasonal lake) is Kandalama Hotel. This Eco-friendly venue has been the first recipient of the Green Globe Certification. On the other side of the lake is the bird-friendly culture club. Here at the club, tastefully laid out trees along the detached cottages attach birds right onto the doorway of the cottages. Of the 435 recorded bird species, at least 23 are native of the island and the area round the culture club is home to many. bodyOffer(33022) Beside bird watching, one has the facility to go elephant trekking, horse riding, canoeing and mountain biking. Guided tours are also available to see the flora and fauna of the area, specially of the dry zone of Srilanka (the area around the culture club).

(First drafted: 10 March 1996. Last revised: 14 July 1998) Aerial View of Vatadage at Daladamaluva (GIF format, ca.151KB) Waseda University Asian Architecture Research Team directed by Takeshi Nakagawa , Dr., Prof., School of Science and Engineering, Waseda Univ. , was established in the Laboratory of Architectural History , with some scholars from other universities, in 1981. The main aim of the study is concentrated in clarifying the Japanese Architectural history from the view point of Asian culture. There are many kinds of cultures and architectures in Asia. We try to realize each architectural peculiarity not with the way used in the study on the history of art and style but with the way used in the study on history of architecture that is based on the detailed field survey, taking measurement, and analyzing the planning method of the architecture. We decided the first area for this study to Sri Lanka, which has kept Buddhist's culture from ancient times to now, and we chose Daladamaluwa Temple, established from the 11th to 13th century in Polonnaruwa, as the main object of this survey.

100. Long Eclipse Of Sri Lankan Culture Is Ending

Long eclipse of Sri Lankan culture is ending
[from The Sunday Times (Colombo) of August 9, 1987] Scholars at the University of California are looking to Sri Lanka for possible solutions to the dilemmas of modern science. How, they ask, could such a small nation survive for thousands of years and manage to preserve intact its diverse cultural traditions? The world, already wracked by terrorism soul conventional warfare, stands on the brink of the ultimate devastation of nuclear war. Mankind’s survival may finally depend upon its ability to recover the wisdom of its ancestors and apply it to present circumstances. Patrick Harrigan, University of California, Berkeley, doctoral student in South Asia Studies who is now visiting Sri Lanka, says, “Here one finds as nowhere else in the world all the classical ingredients of an ancient and ongoing struggle between two modalities of thought that are mutually unintelligible almost separate worlds to themselves. On the one hand you have the civilizing mentality associated with urban life in general and modern or Western ways of thinking in particular and, on the other hand, a much older traditional modality based upon rural culture, most often associated with the so-called Third World. The outcome of their interaction may determine mankind’s future if indeed mankind has any future at all. All the causes of that titanic struggle as well as their potential resolution can be found in microcosm here in Sri Lanka.
