May 13, 2002 by Jason MacNeil ocated just off the southern tip of India, Sri Lanka is an island nation of about two million people covering approximately 25,000 square miles. A country influenced by its British, Dutch, and Portuguese colonial history, Sri Lanka still maintains a deeply conservative lifestyle. But recent Western influences in the form of news media, the Internet, and entertainment have left many teens caught in the middle of a changing culture.

This tension is particularly visible when it comes to matters of sex and relationships. Pre-arranged marriages are not unusual, and three generations often live under the same roof. Sex is still considered a very controversial topic. As a result, discussions of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections often get swept under the rug. "Forget

Culture Shock!: Sri Lanka
Format: Paperback
Author: Robert Barlas
ReleaseDate: September, 1991
Publisher: Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co.
Rating:
Very Informative and Helpful!

The writer for Culture Shock! Sri Lanka appeared to be very familiar with the country. I am married to a Sinhalese and before we traveled to the country for my first visit, I shared selections from the book with my husband. He was pleasantly surprised that the information was fairly accurate. I referred to the book often during my travels and found it very helpful and right on point.
Better than most
This guide is better than most. Lots of useful information about cultural differences. It does not contain much tourist information though so it is best used together with a more detailed guide.

In 1989, Cultural Survival of Sri Lanka was formed with the object of representing the views and interests of traditional villagers who still form the majority of the island's population. The idea was to show that traditional organic lifestyles should be not merely tolerated but studied and emulated if Sri Lanka is to break the cycle of social unrest and environmental degradation brought on largely by the introduction and resulting hegemony of modern Western values and patterns of comsumption. We decided to take the system head-on and challenge the fundamental assumptions of modern urban Sri Lankans. The usual assumption is that life is better in the the town than in the village and better in Colombo than in a town (and by extension, better in foreign countries than in Colombo). Typically, development agencies fan out from the capital to the towns and villages to enlighten ignorant villagers about how they can achieve a western-style standard of living if they would only give up their old ways. This pattern was epitimized by a government edict stipulating that bank loans for housing construction would be approved only for villagers who agreed to use the money only to purchase materials like cement and asbestos roofing. No villager who wanted to build a traditional wattle-and-daub mud hut using locally-available materials could obtain a housing loan. Villagers had learned that to get a bank loan, they had to agree to build and reside in a glorified cement box. The cement barons were getting richer and the villagers were steadily losing their old way of life in the name of national development as defined by urban bureaucrats.

    Sri Lanka
The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is a tropical island nation off the southeast coast of the Indian subcontinent . Known in ancient times as Taprobane and Serendip (derived from the Sanskrit name Sinhala-dweepa) , the island was formerly known as Ceylon , a name still used on occasion, with the current name Sri Lanka meaning "Resplendent Land" in Sanskrit . Life on the island has been marred by nearly two decades of ethnic conflict , mainly between the national government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ( LTTE ) insurgency; in early 2002 a ceasefire was declared.

    Sri Lanka History and Culture
History Sri Lanka was part of the Empire of Asoka during the 3rd century, during which time the population was converted to Buddhism. The Sinhalese inhabitants later moved their capital to Polonnaruva in the south of the island to escape from repeated Tamil invasions during the 11th and 12th centuries. The first Europeans to arrive were the Portuguese, quickly supplanted by the Dutch in the 17th century. In 1796 Sri Lanka (as Ceylon) was acquired from the Dutch by the British.

    ABOUT SRI LANKA
"I feel very spiritually grounded as a result of being
in the midst of a culture where the spirituality and secularity are seamless"
    Antoinette, New Mexico, USA.
Sinhalese: The majority of the island's 19 million are Sinhalese Buddhists, making up about 74% of the population. They speak Sinhala and are known for their warmth and hospitality. The Sinhalese came to Sri Lanka from northern India sometime around the 6th century BC.
Tamils: The second-largest group are Tamils, constituting about 18% of the population. The Tamils are split into the Sri Lankan Tamils who are concentrated in the north and east of the country, and the hill country Tamils whose ancestors were brought from India by the British to work on the tea plantations in the 19th century. Muslims: Around 9% of the population are Muslim, whose presence goes back to Portuguese times and who are probably the descendants of Arab or Indian Muslim traders.
Wanniyala-aetto: Others: The Burghers are Eurasians, primarily descendants of the Portugese and Dutch. For a time the Burghers had disproportionate infuence over the political and business life of Sri Lanka. There are also small Chinese, European and Indian communities.
