The culture and history of the Tamil people of Eelam has a history traced back many thousands of years, and provides a wealth of knowledge steeped in ancient tradition and religion. Unfortunately due to the ongoing genocide perpetrated by the Sri Lankan government, the Tamil culture is on the verge of being destroyed. Our humble attempt is to broadcast to the world our
struggle to preserve and save our culture from the Sri Lanan government's campaign of genocide against the Tamil people.

Government of Sri Lanka The Prehistory of Sri Lanka: an Ecological Perspective,
memoir volume 8 of the Archaeological Survey of Sri Lanka, is the first comprehensive, in-depth account to have been written on the subject. It is the definitive text on the prehistoric archaeology of the island. The systemic interaction of man and environment is viewed within a time-frame spanning over 125 ,000 years - probably 25 0,000 and possibly 500,000 - up to the beginning of the historical period at ca. 500 BC. This represents the very foundation of Sri Lankan culture, an aspect which has hitherto been enshrouded in myth, legend and archaeological nebulosity.

Sri Lanka
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (known as Ceylon before ) is a tropical island nation off the southeast coast of the Indian subcontinent . Known in ancient times as Lanka Lankadweepa (meaning "Resplendent Land" in Sanskrit Taprobane and Serendib (derived from the Sanskrit name Sinhala-dweepa ) and Selan , the island became known as Ceylon in colonial times, a name still used on occasion. Its current name is Sri Lanka . Life on the island has been marred by nearly two decades of ethnic conflict , mainly between the national government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ( LTTE ) insurgency; in early 2002 there was agreement on a ceasefire.

ri Lanka is an island nation located about 35 miles off the southern tip of India. The island is divided into two distinct climatic zones, the Dry Zone and the Wet Zone. The Wet Zone is located in the central highlands and southwestern corner of the island, and receives an average about 50 inches of rain, spread relatively evenly over the course of the year. This is enough to sustain rainforest vegetation. The Dry Zone covers the remaining 70% of the island and although it receives between 30 and 70 inches of rainfall a year, it all falls only during one three month rainy season and the rest of the year remains dry ( DeSilva 1992 Peiris 1992 According to the Mahavamsa, one of the traditional chronicals of early Sri Lankan history, King Asoka of India sent his son and daughter to Sri Lanka from India to establish Buddhism on the island during the first century B.C.E. His son started the first order of monks, and his daughter the first order of nuns on the island. The religious beliefs of the Sinhalese before Buddhism is not known, although it is thought to be some form of Brahmanism. The Dipavamsa, Mahavamsa and Culavamsa, were written by Buddhist monks, or debatably by nuns, and they attempt to increase Sri Lanka's importance to world Buddhism, going as far as claiming that the Buddha's death coincided with Vijaya's arrival on the island ( DeSilva 1981: 4 ). The traditional historical texts of Sri Lanka were part of a thriving civilization, members of whom wanted it to be the ideal Buddhist state. The chronicals try to verify this claim. One story told is that the Buddha visited the island three times, and predicted the domination of this civilization over the indigenous population, the Veddas, who are referred to as demons. On his last visit he left his footprint at the top of Adam's Peak, one of the highest mountains in Sri Lanka, and a popular pilgrimage spot. Pali texts mention no references to the Buddha ever leaving eastern India (

Lunar and Poya Days
Sri Lanka is primarily a Buddhist country and most of its festivals are based on the lunar calendar. Every full moon day, also known as 'Poya' is a holiday. The Buddha encouraged his disciples to undertake spiritual practices during the full moon period and Sri Lankan Buddhists spend these days in meditation and prayer. Each Poya day is related to an incident in the life of the Buddha or to a historic Buddhist event. January (Duruthu)
Duruthu Perahera is conducted on a full moon day in January at the Buddhist temple in Kelaniya. It commemorates the first visit of Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka.

People and Culture of Sri Lanka Sri Lanka has a population of 19 million. The people of Sri Lanka belong to different cultural groups. The biggest cultural group is the Sinhalese. The Sinhalese make up about 75 percent of the Sri Lankan people and they mostly live in the southwestern part of Sri Lanka. The language they speak is Sinhala, the official language, and most people are Buddhists. A small number are Christians (8%). Tamils, another cultural group, make up about 18 percent of Sri Lankan people. Most of them are Hindu. Men normally dress in a long cloth wrapped around the waist and a shirt or jacket. The women of Sri Lanka wear brightly colored saris. If you found a Sri Lankan recipe, it would probably include rice, which is normally served with curried meat, fish, and vegetables. Sri Lanka has many schools. All public schools and most private schools are free from the grades of kindergarten - college. Schools are found in most every village. Children between the ages of 5 and 12 are required to go to school. The languages taught in schools are Sinhalese and Tamil. English is taught in several international schools. • Executive Summary This report is based on the findings of a privately funded initiative, which has conducted over one and half years of formal field study based on over twenty years of working experience in this sphere. Kudumbigala is the name of an abandoned region in the jungle belonging to the villagers of Panama, situated close to the Kumbukkan Oya estuary in Yala East National Park. Nearby is Okanda Devale , a temple shrine dedicated to Skanda-Murukan, situated on a rocky outcrop along the seacoast. The Park is visited via the Eastern Province through the town of Pottuvil (Arugam Bay), the village of Panama and then along a gravel road through Helawa to Kudumbigala and Okanda. There were once several Panama families living in Kudumbigala during the cultivation season. The escalation of the war led to the villagers as well as the Department of Wildlife Conservation fleeing the area. Except for the Special Task Force of the Sri Lanka Police who are in control of Panama, this area is now a gray area, frequented by only transient guerrillas, passing military, and food gatherers. The presence of Wildlife Department officials recommences at the Menik Ganga. In effect, the 60-km cart track from Panama to the Menik Ganga is not policed by any authority. The Sri Lanka Military occasionally carry out operations in this area, and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) are also present. Outsiders hardly visit the region in spite of its natural beauty, and visitors to the National Park now enter from the south and stop at the Menik Ganga, not daring to cross.

A bill was finally passed making Sinhalese the only official language of the country on December 31, 1960, but the Tamil-speaking minority led mass demonstrations against it in early 1961. It wasn't until January 1966, that Tamil become the official administrative language in the northern and eastern parts of the island. The Tamil Tigers still want more than that.
