I am now using Java for my PhD work. Recent experience has been with Visual Basic and Prolog (a declarative logic language) and (long ago) FORTRAN. Java For my PhD I have created a novel tool in Java for synchronous peer discussion in small groups. The tool uses sentence openers to facilitate good educational argumentation in students and uses IRC protocols over the Internet. The interface uses an 'abbreviated' hierarchical tree for display of messages in tandem with a document view of linked replies to provide a coherent argument strand. All previous messages are available in context for reply. For my Masters dissertation I completed a fully working prototype of a computer aided learning (CAL) program Statist-ICAL which used a hypertext browser tool with statistical toolbox, data editing and graphing facilities. The purpose was provide students with the opportunity to learn statistical skills in the context of geography. This was trialled successfully by high school students. Visual Basic was used for the interface with a DDE link to a Prolog server containing a rulebase. The learning resources were webpages with a resource description which were evaluated by a meta-tutor. Differential performance by students drove the meta-tutor to provide alternative paths through the material.

(I drive my SR as if it were an A/D, and transfer sound banks to it without problems, although single patch and performance transfer seems problematic for some reason I've not tracked down.) The overriding drawback of the SR is the 16 by 2 character LCD which makes programming fiddly; the vector joystick is also absent. The user interface is actually quite respectable, but the fact remains that the Wavestation voice architecture is deeply heirarchical and does not easily lend itself to periscope programming, although every parameter is accessible. The SR is a good deal if you're after 550 presets. It's also a compact, fully-fledged Wavestation if you have a decent computer-based editor or are happy with the front panel. The manual on its own is well structured and even pictures the effects algorithms, making it a useful document for owners of the other Wavestations.
