With Amanda Smith
Summary:

What’s hot and what’s not when it comes to which sports are in or out of the Olympic Games?
A recent report by the Programme Commission of the International Olympic Committee puts baseball, softball and modern pentathlon on the chopping block. The new favourites are golf and rugby.
So how are these decisions made – especially when no sport wants to be thrown out of the Olympics, and plenty of others reckon it’s their turn to be on the O-List? Details or Transcript: Amanda Smith: We’re starting The Sports Factor this morning with a question: What do the following sports have in common: cricket, croquet, motor-boating, polo and tug-of-war? MUSIC: ‘Time to Say Goodbye’ Amanda Smith: Yes, they’re all sports that at one time have been part of the Olympic Games, but that got the chop. Other discontinued Olympic events include live pigeon shooting, rope-climbing, an obstacle race and something called the plunge for distance, in swimming. So if you’re one of those people who thinks synchronised swimming is a strange and silly thing to have in the Olympics, well, there’ve been plenty of others in the past that you could put in that category as well. Now, late last week, the Programme Commission of the International Olympic Committee released a report with its recommendations for what sports it wants in, and out, of future Olympic Games, for Beijing and beyond. On the out-list: modern pentathlon, which has been in a shaky position for a while. The more surprising exclusions though are baseball, and softball. And those favoured for inclusion: golf and rugby. They’ve been recommended ahead of a long list of other Olympic aspirants, including squash, surfing, dance sport, bowling and chess.

IOC Says All New Sports Must Include Women

By Stephen Wilson
Associated Press
Monday, February 2, 1998; 6:33 a.m. EST
If any new sports are added to future Olympics, they must include women's events, IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch said today. "The Olympic movement is determined to make its contribution so that the 21st century marks the beginning of a new era for women in world sport,'' Samaranch said in opening the International Olympic Committee session on the eve of the Nagano Games. On Sunday, the IOC approved women's modern pentathlon for the 2000 Sydney Games. Women's weightlifting and women's water polo already are planned for Sydney. "The IOC has decided that any new sport wishing to be included in the Olympic program must comprise women's events,'' Samaranch said in a speech. The IOC gave provisional recognition last week to the federations representing sumo wrestling and bodybuilding. Wrestling and boxing, two male-only sports already in the summer games, are pushing to include women's events. Sydney officials said the move boosts the total proportion of female athletes to 42 percent, an increase of 5 percent over the previous record at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

The following reports provide a detailed account of the ASC's achievements for 1995-96.
Australian Institute of Sport
Sports Management
  • In 1995-96 nearly $56.9 million was allocated to NSOs and athletes under the SAS and the OAP. Organisations receiving financial assistance were required to have strategic or development plans identifying their activities and targeted outcomes for the year. These provide the basis for annual performance reviews.
Sports Assistance Scheme
  • $36.9 million was allocated to 117 NSOs (including umbrella and service organisations) to support activities in the broad funding areas of sports management, coaching, participation, athlete support and development, officiating, international competition and hosting of international sporting events in Australia. Appendix 4 details the individual allocations.
  • Financial support was given for hosting 37 international sporting events in Australia. World championships or similar high level international competitions were supported in men's bowls, speed roller skating, yachting, ice skating, women's water polo, deaf cricket, triathlon, women's volleyball and soccer. Funding commitments were made for major events to be held in 1996-97 and 1997-98 including the 1996 World Junior Athletics Championships, the 1997 Under 23 men's World Basketball Championships, the 1997 World Track Cycling Championships, the 1997 Champions Trophy in men's hockey and the 1997 World Women's Open Squash Championships.

ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: SQUASH'S LATASHA KHAN Hardwork, determination and focus. That's what U.S. squash standout Latasha Khan (Seattle, Wash.) believes are the keys to her success. A player since the age of eight, Khan was introduced to the sport through her father Yusuf, former owner of the Seattle Racquet Club. A native of Pakistan, Yusuf was a professional player who moved to the United States to pursue his coaching career. For the Khans, squash is truly a family affair, as three of the eight children (Latasha, Shabana and Azam) all play competitively. The trio has all reached the elite level of the sport under the guidance of their father. Currently, Latasha is the number-one ranked female in the U.S. Older sister Shabana competed in the '95 and '99 Pan American Games and is a contender for the 2003 Pan Am team. Brother Azam is a former U.S. national team member and now playing on the professional circuit.

BEIJING 2008
At the end of August, word came out that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided that Squash will not be included on the programme of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing 2008. In a letter to WSF President, Susie Simcock, IOC President Dr. Jacques Rogge states that the principles of the Olympic Programme indicate that any new sports which are to be considered for inclusion must bring additional value to the Programme. It appears that public and media interest in a sport must be considered as key elements in the analysis of sports for these are fundamental elements in the success of the Games. Statistics reviewed by the IOC on federation affiliation, nations competing in major events and broadcast and press coverage of major events for most of the sports bidding for a place did not indicate a higher level of global participation and interest than sports currently on the Programme and could not be considered to bring additional value. During a forum on the subject in Lausanne, Dr. Rogge stated that the Programme would remain at a maximum of 28 sports and 300 events for the Beijing Games. This means that if any new sports are to be admitted some of the current ones on the programme must be eliminated and this decision will be made by the IOC Session in Mexico in November.

http://www.landofsixpeoples.com/news02/gyltns20120.htm
I admire the venerable Guyanese Squash tradition Stabroek News
January 20, 2002
Dear Editor,
I suppose if I didn't know better I may share the prejudice against those citizens, whose reward for representing Guyana with distinction and a record of success unmatched by most other disciplines, is the proverbial punishment that finds the doers of good deeds in the form of ill founded and misguided untterances from Mr. Fazil Rasheed. (SN17.1.02 " How many people play squash? ") [ please note: link provided by LOSP web site
It is true that in Guyana squash is only played by a few hundred persons the equipment is somewhat expensive and access to squash courts is indeed limited. The sport has a long way to go to cast off its elitist image it has in our country and perhaps the Guyana Squash Racquets Association may wish to consider embracing the services of the good Mr. Rasheed, in coming up with solutions. But there is where my diplomacy abandons me.
I am employed away from home and family. I miss familiar people and things and like every other patriotic soul, I spend quite a bit of time at odds with those who dare speak ill of Guyana or Guyanese. Fortunately, things are quite different when I meet other squash players. They have a sincere admiration for the venerable Guyanese squash tradition and share my particular pride in Ms. Fernandes' regional and international exploits. I swell like a peacock and carry on perpetually about all our legendary Guyanese players.
I have never laid my eyes upon an actual boxing ring and will a pugilist never be. Yet, I sit in my living room and celebrate whenever one of our boxers duels gallantly in a televised bout. Similarly, while, I will spend the rent money to attend every cricket match during a West Indian home series, I am a hopeless cricketer. Further, as every cricketer or boxer or other athlete discovers eventually, the proper equipment and facilities for serious training can be quite elusive and often more expensive than squash gear. The propostion that one has to be an actual participant or a keen spectator to appreciate and respect the achievements is simply untrue.

Ryding, Miller win national squash titles
WebPosted Sat, 01 May 2004 21:27:04 EDT CBC SPORTS ONLINE - They weren't the favourites earlier this week but Graham Ryding and Alana Miller were crowned the men's and women's champions on Saturday at the 2004 Canadian squash championships in Vancouver. The women's final was the most exciting of the two as Miller defeated Runa Reta of Ottawa 8-10, 9-6, 10-8, 10-9. In the fourth game, Miller squandered an 8-2 lead and saw Reta move ahead 9-8. "I just felt that if Runa won that fourth game she would have the momentum in the fifth," said Miller, a native of Winnipeg who was seeded third while Reta was seeded fifth. "I just made up my mind that I would fight for every shot. It was a very intense match. I was a bit surprised she came back like that but she's always been a fighter."
