Welcome to the CALLERLAB Website
CALLERLAB exists to improve square dancing: To recruit, promote, and maintain the square dance activity. As an organization of square dance callers, it is our mission to provide education and guidance to the leaders of our activity. CALLERLAB also maintains a suggested list of dancing programs, from Mainstream through C-3A. In the late 1980's, the CALLERLAB Board Of Governors took action to create a foundation which would be dedicated to the preservation and promotion of square dancing. The plan was for this foundation to provide a way for those who wished to make a tax-deductible donation to help in this effort. The CALLERLAB Foundation for the Preservation and Promotion of Square Dancing was formed in 1992 and is registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation. The Foundation website ( www.CALLERLABFoundation.org ) includes history, mission, and goals of the Foundation. It provides information about the accomplishments and plans for future activities. Also included is information regarding the Foundation-sponsored Education Grants. Please take a look at: www.CALLERLABFoundation.org

My Parents Were Undercover Square Dancers
An investigation into the dark world of square dancing.
BY MARK STIBICH
STUDENT.COM CORRESPONDENT Now that the Unabomber is caught, Americans are startled as they learn of the depth and scope of the FBI investigation. The FBI, desperate to penetrate the layers of secrecy cloaking America's sub-cultures, depended on many fine citizens for undercover work. The Beer Lady's own parents were approached several years ago to aid the FBI by infiltrating the highly secret and ritualistic cult known nation-wide as Square Dancing [ed. Do-Si-Do Fitness By Denise Mann WebMD Feature Archive July 9, 2001 "Bow to your partner, bow to your corner, circle left, alemand left ... swing and promenade home." In squares of eight across the country, Americans from senior-citizen age on down are linking arms, sashaying, and "do-si-doing" themselves to longer, healthier, and happier lives. They're having a blast and also lowering their risk of heart disease, diabetes, certain types of cancer, age-related memory loss, osteoporosis, and depression. Good for Body and Mind With all its moving, twisting, and turning, square dancing provides more than the daily dose of heart- and bone-healthy physical activity. Remembering all the calls from "do-si-do" to 'alemand' keeps the mind sharp, potentially staving off age-related memory loss, experts say. And the companionship that regular square dancing offers is an antidote to depression and loneliness, a statement confirmed by square-dancing advocates everywhere. Take Larry McKinley, a 62-year-old who has been square dancing for 30-plus years with his wife, Sue who, incidentally, he met at a square dance. "We do it as often as we can, maybe five or six times a week," he tells WebMD.

79. What Is Square Dancing?
(Updated 4/00) WHAT IS square dancing? First off, square dancing is probably NOT what you think it is. square dancing IS a lot of fun.
http://saturn.vcu.edu/~jmatro/square.html
(Updated 4/00) WHAT IS SQUARE DANCING? First off, square dancing is probably NOT what you think it is. It's usually presented in movies, schools, etc., as a fairly "simple" activity (you know do-si-do, promenade, swing your partner, etc.). Nothing could be farther from the truth, as you'll see below. Square dancing IS a lot of fun. Once you start, you'll probably find that you're hooked. It's also a great way to get exercise. For some health info, click HERE A typical dance evening consists of several dance "tips," lasting about 10 minutes each, with breaks in between. At the beginning of a tip, the dancers line up to form "squares." A square has four couples, with one couple making each side of the square. There may be many squares on the floor, but each is separate. That is, each square of four couples works together as a team, independently of the others. A "caller" stands at one end of the hall and begins giving a sequence of instructions for the dancers to follow. Each of these instructions, or "calls," requires that some or all of the dancers in the square perform a pre-determined manuever. The caller doesn't literally tell you where to move, he/she just gives the name of the call, such as "linear cycle" or "ends fold," and the dancers respond. Some of the manuevers are simple, others are more complex. Although they begin in a square, after each manuever the formation of the dancers will change, maybe to waves, or columns, or diamonds, etc., or the dancers' positions within the formation will change. There are lots of variations.
