SOTA Kimberley
General
Kimberley School of the Air commenced in 1960 at the RFDS base at the Derby Airport, eventually transferring to Derby District High School and in 1981 to it's own building. The school was officially opened in 1982. At this time the school received it's own frequency 5850 eliminating interruptions to air lessons that were then shared with RFDS emergencies and general business. The school, rapidly expanding in enrolments and staff, was given a second and third building in 1987 and 1990. A second frequency, 6925, was also added in 1990. Sharing common grounds with Derby District High School, the school is now one of five Schools of the Air within the Schools of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE), within the Department of Education of Western Australia. Demographics
Kimberley School of the Air caters to the educational needs of isolated children from Kindy to Year 7 in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Spread across an area of some 450,000 sq kms, these children today live on cattle stations, stations now catering to tourism, small Aboriginal communities or outstations and smaller rural farming blocks. Personnel
KSOTA staff vary according to student numbers, but currently includes the Principal, 7 teachers, a part time librarian and full time registrar. Our student population stands at 70, although this figure fluctuates during the wet season. Thirty percent of our current enrolment are Aboriginal students. KSOTA attracts experienced teachers who tend to stay at the school for three or more years. Among our current staff KSOTA has a specialist computer teacher with other teachers offering music and art as specialist areas.

NYC Sports by Jessica Green 15 May 00 THE LOWDOWN: The NYC school system has been criticized on many fronts: crumbling and overcrowded classrooms, uncertified teachers, lax standards. In light of these very serious problems, other shortcomings, like the woeful state of sports in the schools, are generally overlooked. With so many other pressing needs, triage is necessary, and gym class has been the first to go. Sports, both physical education and extracurricular teams, have been drastically downsized, both in New York and across the country. Until the early 1990s, NYC public schools, like schools around the nation, required its students to participate in physical education classes five days a week. No longer. Over the past few years, that requirement has been replaced with the "3-2" system, where kids take phys ed three times in one week, and twice the next. This change mirrors a nationwide trend. In 1996, the Surgeon General reported, only one-quarter of American high school students took daily phys ed classes, down from 42% in 1991. Some states like Massachusetts, which eliminated the state-mandated minimum time spent in phys ed have loosened their requirements. Others, like Idaho, have eliminated them altogether. In fact, only one state, Illinois, continues its daily phys ed requirement.

Specialists get large sums of extra money
The prime minister has said that more new specialist secondary schools will be created faster than previously planned. And there will be three new specialist subjects - engineering, science, and business and enterprise - to add to the existing technology, arts, languages and sports schools. Tony Blair said he wanted to see the present target of 1,000 specialist schools met by 2003 - one year earlier than previously planned - with a total of 1,500 by the end of the next parliament. He was setting out his vision for a second term in government in a speech to pupils, teachers and parents at a secondary school in Enfield, north London - built with private finance. Almost half of all secondaries The planned expansion of specialist schools would mean 46% of all maintained secondary schools having that status. Currently 608 have been designated, with 536 already in operation.

Wednesday, November 26, 2003 Monroe schools considers sports field options
By Sue Kiesewetter
Enquirer contributor
MONROE
- When the Monroe Local Schools opens its K-12 complex next year, football and soccer will still be played at the current junior/senior high school. But spending $2 million to $2.6 million would add a stadium at the new complex and provide enough fields to support community and school sporting events for several years, a study group says. "Do it all at one time and do it right,'' said board member William "Rocky" Heflin, who was part of a six-member committee that studied the issue. In a presentation to the school board this week, Heflin presented four options for consideration by the board of education: Superintendent Arnol Elam said he would meet with city leaders in late January to discuss options so that the city and schools could work together to provide sports fields on the complex that youth sports organizations could also use. Elam said he would also study how the district could pay for any of the options if the board of education decided to move ahead on one.

(AP) The uncertainity shows up in the quieter skies over some small airports and the calls to a Norman flight school from students canceling their enrollment. Small planes are flying again in Oklahoma, but general and private aviation may be staggering for some time from the Sept. 11 attacks on the nation. "It's because the whole American population is scared to death," said Brenda Keene, admissions director at Airman Flight School, where some classes have dwindled to half their size since the attacks. The Federal Aviation Administration has lifted restrictions that shut down flight schools and grounded small planes after the terrorist hijackings.
