Mike is better than the rest. Michael Jordan, who dominated the NBA and won six championships, has been named the greatest North American athlete of the 20th century by SportsCentury's distinguished 48-member panel . Babe Ruth, who revolutionized baseball in the 1920s, finished second in the voting. Michael Jordan was in a class by himself in the NBA. Playing 11 full seasons in the NBA, Jordan led the league in scoring 10 times, and in 1986-87 became the only player besides Wilt Chamberlain to score more than 3,000 points in a season, getting 3,041. His 31.5 scoring average is the highest in NBA history and with 29,277 points he's fourth all-time behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Chamberlain and Karl Malone. "Jordan said, 'A lot of times I'll dream I'm a bad alcoholic and I can't stop drinking and embarrassing myself. And I'm going to lose everything. I wake up from that dream in a sweat.' He knows that one slip up, one mistake, can throw it all away. And I think he lived in terror of that for a very long time," says author Bob Greene about Michael Jordan on ESPN's SportsCentury show.

Eric Bristow: Crafty Cockney was Embassy king
It all started in 1978, when Welshman Leighton Rees beat Englishman John Lowe 11-7 in the first ever Embassy World Darts Championship final. The winner picked up a cheque for £3,000, a sum which would be considered small in modern times. The two would clash again at the same stage a year later and this time Lowe got revenge with a crushing 5-0 victory. EMBASSY CHAMPIONS 1978 - Leighton Rees

History of the University of Illinois
Adapted Varsity Sports Program
A long, long time ago (fifty years, to be exact) in a city only three hours away, the University of Illinois at Galesburg began a highly specialized program in competitive sports: the University of Illinois Gizz Kids. The man we all know (and love) who was the catalyst in this proactive movement in wheelchair sports was Timothy J. Nugent (affectionately known as Sarge-uh, Coach, by his team). The program evolved to include a wide variety of sports ranging from: archery, basketball, bowling, cheerleading and football to swimming, table tennis, and square dancing with the intent to allow students with disabilities to not only achieve academically, but also to participate in related extracurricular activities offered to their able-bodied classmates. The Gizz Kids went on to compete in the first National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament (NWBT) which was hosted by the U of I at Galesburg. From 1948 to 1970 the Gizz Kids finished in the top four of the NWBT 13 times and won the National Championship on three occasionstheir first in 1953. Throughout the years, the University of Illinois was at the forefront of wheelchair technology development to enhance participation in sport. The "Illinois Wheel", a pneumatic tire which improved speed, traction, and maneuverability was developed. In 1967, a new, lightweight sports chair made from stainless steel was developed with Stainless Medical Products, Inc. which led to two back-to-back NWBA National championship titles for the Gizz Kids. These two developments served as a catalyst for ongoing improvements and modifications which are still a focus of today's wheelchair manufacturers.

History
Winter Sports in Big Bear
During the early part of the twentieth century, Big Bear became a magnet for vacationers. Summertime found the local lodges filled to capacity, and hundreds of camp sites dotted the Big Bear Lake shore line. But wintertime was another story. Dirt roads into the mountains were usually impassable because of snow and mud. In the mid 1920's, it was Walter Kruckman of the "Motor Transit Company", who first seriously promoted winter sports in Big Bear. He sponsored radio spots on radio stations giving reports on weather, snow, and road conditions in an attempt to fill his empty buses during the wintertime. In Big Bear, the Viking Ski Club of Los Angeles began hosting ski jump competitions on a jump near today's Elk's Club. Carl Stillwell built a snow slide area near his main pavilion and even promoted iceskating on Big Bear Lake which is now illegal and dangerous. But it was Judge Clifford R. Lynn who led the way in an "uphill" battle to get the first chair lift built in Big Bear. Clifford formed the Park District in 1934, and immediately built a toboggan snow play area on the north facing slopes above of Big Bear Village. A "sling lift" was also built at the snow play area for skiers in 1938.

Background
The theme of sport gathered momentum in the 1980s, carried along by the wave of enthusiasm for "A People’s Europe" and by the Adonnino Report, which instigated communication and publicity campaigns to raise awareness of the Community through sport. The recommandations of this report were adopted by the Milan European Council in 1985. The Amsterdam Declaration was a decisive step towards taking sport into account at Community level. Following up this Declaration, the Community presented for the first time its overall vision of sport in the report presented at the Helsinki European Council in December 1999 and its Declaration at the Nice European Council in 2000 . This vision goes beyond the conventional idea of sport as a horizontal area of intervention for various policies. It establishes a homogenous and coherent definition of this area, underlining the importance of sport’s social function and the need to take sport into account in the implementation of every Community policy. The Commission has now undertaken to follow up the Helsinki report on sport. Alternative Navigation What's up: Actions sport:

The Legion's involvement in track and field goes back to the 1950's when Ontario Legion Hydro Branch 277 first sponsored the former Canadian Olympic Training Plan. This program went Dominion wide after the 1956 Legion Dominion Convention in Vancouver. By 1957 the Legion was conducting national athletes' clinics with each province being invited to send athletes and coaches.
By 1961 more than 700 athletes had attended these sessions. In 1962 the Canadian Government awarded a grant to sustain the program and this funding continued until 1969. When this support was withdrawn, the track and field program went back to being a provincial level program. In 1975, however, the Legion decided to run a pilot national track and field meet in Waterloo, Ontario. It's extreme success led to the continuation of the program for a 1976 meet in Edmonton, Alberta, since when it has become an annual event and a major program within the Legion. Funding is provided from the Legion's own resources. The nationally sanctioned event which has developed over the years is now divided into two sections - a two-day meet and a two-day clinic for the athletes. These events are attended by more than 330 athletes, 25 coaches and 35 chaperons.

Game of Chogan (Polo), painted by: Mahmoud Farshchian
Polo is arguably one of the most complex of games in the world. The precise origin of polo is obscure and undocumented and there is ample evidence of the game's regal place in the history of Asia. No one knows where or when stick first met ball after the horse was domesticated by the ancient Iranian (Aryan) tribes of Central Asia before their migration to Iranian plateau; but it seems likely that as the use of light cavalry spread throughout Iranian plateau, Asia Minor, China and the Indian sub-continent so did this rugged game on horse back. However, many scholars believe that polo originated among the Iranian tribes sometime before the reign of Darius the Great (521-485 BCE) and his cavalry forged the Second Iranian Empire, the
