Making sports history again, again and again By Andrew Coakley FN Sports Editor Three Bahamian softball stand-outs finally got their just reward over the weekend, as they were officially inducted into the International Softball Hall of Fame, by Clovis Lodewijks, vice-president of the ISF. The induction ceremonies for Greg Christie and Bobby "Baylor" Fernander took place on Friday night during a banquet at the Royal Oasis Resort. The official induction ceremony for Dudley "Dougie" Smith, took place Saturday night in Eleuthera, Dougie's home town. This marks the first time that three Bahamians have been inducted into the Hall of Fame at the same time, which is an indication of the level of participation and commitment to the sport of softball Bahamians have given over the years. Dougie has been noted for his achievement as a player and a coach; Baylor has long been an outstanding coach for the ladies' national team, helping to take them to number three in the world in the sport of softball; and Christie has been noted for his contribution to the sport in the area of administration. Being inducted into the ISF Hall of Fame is no small feat, and the three inducted over the weekend, join a small, privileged list of other Bahamians who have attained such status.

44. Intramural Sports History
Division of Recreational Sports The university also facilitated the operation of over 20 club sports organizations which involved some 500 men and women.
http://wiscinfo.doit.wisc.edu/recsports/intramurals/im_history.htm
The inception of the intramural activities at Wisconsin was noted as early as 1893 upon completion of the Armory Gymnasium on Langdon Street. Interclass and inter-college participation in baseball, contact football, gymnastics, and track and field existed in the early 1900's under the direction of various physical education department staff members. The period of 1910-1920 marked the first dramatic increase in intramural activities. Inter-fraternity swimming contests marked the beginning of competition between Greek organizations. All-university competition was to follow and in 1920, a staff of seventeen members, directed by the program's first intramural director, George Berg, conducted an expanding program of activities which involved not only the students but faculty and staff members as well. An administrative reorganization of the intercollegiate and physical education divisions in the early 1930's prompted the appointment of Art Thomsen as coordinator of intramurals in the fall of 1932. This new administration sought to arouse interest among independent students, and by 1937 the number of independent teams had grown form 3 in 1932 to 71. Fifteen different activities were offered in 1936-37, with rowing, volleyball, handball and badminton being the most popular additions. Expectedly, the advent of World War II caused intramural participation to drop drastically, with less than 2,500 male students in attendance at Wisconsin. Immediately after the war, 1946-47, the enrollment of male students reached an all time high. As a result, the intramural program underwent some significant changes, both physically and structurally. Acreage was obtained on the west campus for outdoor activities, while program activities were administered under the new title of Intramural-Recreation: INtramurals, representing structured competition leading to championships, and recreation signifying the informal, free play phase of participation. Total participation accelerated again with the opening of Gym Unit II in 1967, and further expansion of outdoor areas. This increase was accompanied by a large increase in the number of women participants.

June 11 The first-ever perfect game was credited to John Lee Richmond. Of course, he only stood 45 feet from home plate and had to throw underhand. Chicago Cubs hurler Bobb Wicker fired 9 1/3rd innings of no-hit ball, and his perfection and durability pay off as he won in 12 innings, 1-0 over the New York Giants. Walter Hagen captured the U.S. Open with a narrow one-stroke victory over Michael Brady. Grey Lag, under Earl Sande, won the first Belmont Stakes ever to be run counterclockwise. Previous Belmonts were run clockwise over a fish-hook course that included part of the training track and the main dirt oval. Johnny Vander Meer pitched the first of consecutive no-hitters, this one against the Boston Braves, winning 3-0. Ralph Guldahl won the U.S. Open for the second consecutive year by beating out Dick Metz. Cary Middlecoff beat out Sam Snead and Clayton Heafner to win the U.S. Open. Ben Hogan won the United States Open Championship, winning in a three-way playoff.

I was sitting around Tuesday night with a few friends, chattering excitedly about one of sports’ most difficult accomplishments when I heard these words: “Boy, perfect games are getting pretty common now, huh?” Don’t kid yourselves. It’s true that there have been three in the past seven seasons, and there has been one every three or four seasons since 1981. But I don’t think a perfect game has fallen out of the “freakishly rare” column quite yet. Don’t think Randy Johnson doesn’t know it, either. The last three days have seen a well deserved burst of publicity for the 17th perfect game in major league history. All the same, there have been some questions about the level of Johnson’s excitement over his landmark night. Boston starter Bronson Arroyo, who went 27 up, 27 down for the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox last year, commented in yesterday’s The Boston Globe that Johnson “looked like he had just thrown a complete-game shutout. It didn’t seem like it was a big deal to him.”

Golf at the University of Michigan
(Golf was selected as an example, similar papers could be done on any of the men's or women's sports.) Golf was first organized as a varsity sport in 1901 under the instigation of Prof. Thomas Trueblood but golf did not become a conference sport until 1922. From 1922-1950 Michigan had one of the best golf records in the Big Ten and produced several outstanding players. Since then the teams have posted mediocre records, with a few exceptions. There has been virtually nothing written about golf, men's or women's, at the U of M beyond the short sketch by Les Etter in the Encyclopedic Survey. The story of the university golf course, designed by Alistair McKenzie and in its day considered one of the finest college courses in the nation, has also been neglected. This paper would have to rely heavily on newspaper coverage in the Daily and possibly the Ann Arbor News.
