The University of Chicago sophomore had nine strikeouts and no walks in five scoreless innings, and Petra Wade finished off the combined three-hitter as the Maroons downed the Eagles 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III softball regional at Alma, Mich. Carrie Clum and Katie Hensgen singled and Andrea Runde doubled for Edgewood (22-17), which committed three costly errors that led to three unearned runs. Roberts, whose 0.15 earned-run average is best in the nation in Division III, helped Chicago (27-9) at the plate as well. She singled and scored during a three-run fifth inning that built on an early 1-0 lead. Brittany Butcher pitched a complete game, allowing 10 hits, striking out two and issuing no walks.

Colleges roundup
By BRIAN LANDMAN, PETE YOUNG and Times staff reports published May 30, 2002
Sex was consensual, ex-Irish player says
SOUTH BEND, Ind. Former Notre Dame receiver Lorenzo Crawford had consensual sex with a student and was not involved in a gang rape, his lawyer said Wednesday. Ken Cotter said while an affidavit submitted by prosecutors indicates Crawford admitted to rape, a videotaped statement shows Crawford said it was consensual. The woman accused the players of luring her into a bedroom after she met former Irish safety Justin Smith at a bar and agreed to go with them to Smith's home. Crawford, Smith, former safety Donald Dykes and former safety Abram Elam have been charged.
