While recent advances in emergency care and rehabilitation allow many SCI patients to survive, methods for reducing the extent of injury and for restoring function are still limited. Immediate treatment for acute SCI includes techniques to relieve cord compression, prompt (within 8 hours of the injury) drug therapy with corticosteroids such as methylprednisolone to minimize cell damage, and stabilization of the vertebrae of the spine to prevent further injury. What is the prognosis?

About this site Please consider making a donation to help keep this website online What is Spinal Cord Injury? Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is damage to the spinal cord that results in a loss of function such as mobility or feeling. Frequent causes of damage are trauma (car accident, gunshot, falls, etc.) or disease (polio, spina bifida, Friedreich's Ataxia, etc.). The spinal cord does not have to be severed in order for a loss of functioning to occur. In fact, in most people with SCI, the spinal cord is intact, but the damage to it results in loss of functioning. SCI is very different from back injuries such as ruptured disks, spinal stenosis or pinched nerves.
A person can "break their back or neck" yet not sustain a spinal cord injury if only the bones around the spinal cord (the vertebrae) are damaged, but the spinal cord is not affected. In these situations, the individual may not experience paralysis after the bones are stabilized.
What is the spinal cord and the vertebra?

My Account Of Life With A Spinal Cord Injury and Paralysis
On July 16th 1994, my life took a dramatic turn, I had a low speed fall from a mountain bike, which left me with a broken neck at the C2,3 and 4 vertebrae and total body paralysis. I was completely paralysed from the neck down fighting for my life. I was now destined to spend my life as a quadriplegic or tetraplegic, with none of the body and muscle movements I used to take for granted. Spinal cord injury was going to become a central point of my life. Spinal Injuries occur suddenly and in most cases without warning. Each day hundreds of people worldwide and their families and friends are coming to terms with a new spinal injury and paralysis. This website is intended to help other spinally injured persons and people close to them, after their lives are affected by this devastating disability. However, I know now that life doesn't stop after a spinal cord injury and in fact it can go on getting better
The site now contains some nice community message boards and an easy to use chat room
My life has changed beyond comprehension since my spinal cord injury, I honestly believe that I am a better person now because of my experience. If you would like to find out more please come inside

    Executive Summary
Among the most exciting frontiers in medicine is the repair of traumatic injuries to the spinal cord. Improvements in treatment are helping many more people survive spinal cord injury. Yet most spinal cord injuries still cause lifelong disability, and continued research is critically needed. To explore new directions for research on spinal cord injury, the National Institutes of Health sponsored a scientific workshop on September 30 - October 1, 1996. The workshop, Spinal Cord Injury: Emerging Concepts, brought together experts from the field of spinal cord injury research and leaders from other fields such as development, immunology, and stroke. Current Understanding and Treatment The normal spinal cord coordinates movement and sensation in the body. It is a complex organ containing nerve cells, supporting cells, and nerve fibers to and from the brain. The spinal cord is arranged in segments, with higher segments controlling movement and sensation in upper parts of the body and lower segments controlling the lower parts of the body. The consequences of injury reflect this organization.

Learning to function effectively with a spinal cord injury or other disability can sometimes be a lengthy learning experience. This site provides tips and possible solutions to various problems a disabled person may encounter on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. The goal is to help people with disabilities find solutions, success and happiness. This site would be classified more as a self-help guide rather than, a who can help me guide. Explore and make things happen. By making things happen you can continue to move forward. If there is only one thing you learn: learn to push yourself, both physically and mentally. Move out of your comfort zone. Make that call about the job. Explore a new exercise program. Try that new mobility device. Learn what works for you. If you want something, ask. If you can learn from other peoples' mistakes and successes, you can save a lot of time. Find a mentor or somebody that you can discuss your ideas with. Do your best to be positive.
