This site contains more than 700 pictures of over 220 spiders commonly found in NW-Europe, especially the area between the Netherlands and the south of France.
There is a thumbnail page and a Spider location chart for a quick overview of all the spiders posted on these pages. Of all photographed spiders, there is a short description about their habitat, size and other interesting facts. Apart from the European spiders I have also posted more than 200 pictures of Australian spiders Most people think that spiders are dangerous creatures that should be wiped away with a cloth, sucked up in the vacuum cleaner or smashed with a newspaper. That is not wise because spiders play a very important role in our Eco-system. They catch many annoying and harmful insects and are therefore very useful creatures. As you will see on these pages, many of the spiders are beautifully colored, and therefore very pleasant and wonderful to look at. Since most spiders are very small, you need a magnifying glass or a camera to study them or to reveal their beauty. I receive many questions about poisonous/venomous spiders. Most spiders use venom to kill their prey. This venom is almost always harmless to humans. However, there are a few exceptions. In Europe there is one known spider, called the

Checklist of Spiders (Araneae) in Sweden
[Preliminary version February 2001]
Department of Entomology, Swedish Museum of Natural History, Stockholm Being a preliminary version, I gratefully ask for amendments, changes, additions or other improvements
Introduction This is a preliminary version of a checklist of spider species reported from Sweden up to present. The records in the published literature (also in press) have been considered and the list presently includes the names of 704 species. A few names mentioned in the literature have been omitted because the nominal species as such are in need of revision, or the identification of the published material from Sweden is in need of verification. In 1955, Tullgren described some linyphiid (erigonine) species as new. Most of these names have been found to be junior synonyms, referring to species known from Sweden by other records. Two of these names (marked with a blue ), refer to species which are known from Sweden only by Tullgren's names though already known to be junior, not yet formally established synonyms. The presence of some more species in the country is known by personal communication but these will be included in a later version after they have been published in print. Records of casual introductions have been omitted. It is unavoidable that there are uncertainties about the presence of some of the species, and a list like this will always have a provisional character.
Though several publications have been devoted to spiders in Sweden during the last centuries, no inclusive account of all spiders species found throughout Sweden has appeared since the book by Westring in 1861, in which 308 species by then known were treated (a number of which were considered new to science). This book was soon followed by the more or less extensive "remarks" by Thorell (1870-73) to each of the species treated by Westring. Many of the specific names used by Westring, and a part of the ones introduced by Westring (a number of which already in 1851), have later been synonymized due to priority, or allocated into other genera.

Sources - Literature - The "STUDIEDOCUMENTEN" (study documents) of the "Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen"(Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences) has at this moment 14 publications ready on the Belgian spiders. This work is not yet finished; part 1 was published in 1977 and part 14 appeared in 1996. No drawings, pictures, definitions, keys to be expected over here: only a description of the appearance of several families at specific places in the belgian environment. Good descriptions and keys are to be found in following works: - La Faune de Belgique - par Aug. Lameere - Lamertin Bxl 1907 - Antiquity - Les animaux de la Belgique - par Aug. Lameere - Ed. Les Naturalistes Belges 1936 - Antiquity, Very good - gives also description of the biotope of spiders - ideal for ecologist and environmental studies - Spinnen van Nederland by W. Van Katwijk - A.A. Balkema/Rotterdam 1976 - very good en detailed book for as well beginners as for a more advanced public . Indispensable for a good study of Belgian and Dutch Spiders - Nederlandse Spinnen by Pater Chrysanthus - KNNV 1980 - Thieme's Spinnengids by Dick Jones - Thieme 1983 - This by Van Katwijk adapted book has a lot of excellent and marvelous pictures, gives a good description of ecology and biotope, but is rather vague when it comes to determination... The main family key is great!

Even if the search is eventually successful, it almost always turns up too much junk. Worse, no search is ever comprehensive. The dark attic of the Internet is only infiltrated as far as the very limited capabilities of a particular search engine. Yahoo's directory, for example, is merely an index of selected sites cataloged by anonymous editors. Other popular indexers such as Excite, Lycos, and Alta Vista send spindly bits of software known as spiders meandering from Web site to Web site, sucking up bits of text from each page they encounter and making a list of the keywords they find. Biological Control at National Entomology Society Meetings
The following is a continuation of brief summaries of some presentations made at the 1997 National Meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Nashville (see previous issue 1. Autodissemination of entomopathogenic fungi: A tool for biological control of the diamondback moth - J. Pell, IACR, Rothamsted, England Work done in Malaysia and Africa has shown that fungal pathogens of diamondback moth , such as Beauveria bassiana and Zoophthora radicans , can effectively be spread using specialized traps. Male moths are lured into traps in response to synthetic sex pheromone. As they leave the trap they get contaminated with a lethal dose of the fungus. When they disperse back to the crop they disseminate spores to susceptible larvae and establish new infections. Transmission of Z. radicans is low (10-15%), but of B. bassiana to other adults (93-100%) and larvae (70%) is high. 2. Parasitoids found in on-farm stored shelled corn in Kentucky - B. Phylogeny of Parasitic Angiosperms and Evolution of a Group I intron in the COXI gene of angiosperms
Since 1996 I have been collaborating with Dr. Claude dePamphili s at Pennsylvania State University on determining a global phylogeny of angiosperms based on the COX I mitochondrial gene, which can be used for phylogenetic analysis of all angiosperms, including those that lack chloroplast genes customarily used for phylogenetic analysis. I am currently studying a unique group I intron found rarely in other angiosperms but found in virtually every parasitic lineage studied. This work should not only elucidate the phylogeny of these plants but also should lead to an understanding of horizontal transfer of the intron to these plants.
