Spider myths
The myth of the brown recluse bite
Even in areas where Brown Recluse spiders do not occur, doctors and the public frequently diagnose a variety of lesions as brown recluse spider bites. The following articles written for different audiences address this issue: An amusing yet educational rant regarding the lack of BR in California"The Myth of the Brown Recluse"

42. Spider Myths--DaddyLongLegs
was the cellar spiders but arachnologists have also given them the moniker of daddylonglegsspiders because of the confusion generated by the general public

Daddy-longlegs Myth
Have you heard this one?:
DADDY-LONGLEGS ARE ONE OF THE MOST POISONOUS SPIDERS BUT THEIR FANGS ARE TOO SHORT TO BITE HUMANS
This tale has been lurking around for years. I have heard it repeatedly in the United States and even heard a schoolteacher misinforming her class at a museum in Brisbane, Australia. This is incorrect, but to clarify it, several points need to be explained first.
The animals
Most folks who retell this tale have no idea that they are referring to two completely separate groups of animals: "daddy-longlegs" and "daddy-longlegs spiders". In the animal class Arachnida, there are several lower level divisions called Orders. Scorpions are in the Order Scorpiones, spiders are in the Order Araneae, ticks and mites are in the Order Acari. The creatures most correctly called daddy-longlegs are in their own separate Order which is Opiliones. Common names for this Order are 1) daddy-longlegs, 2) harvestmen and 3) opilionids. They are characterized by having one basic body segment which shows segmentation on the posterior portion, at most 2 eyes and all 8 legs attach to the pill-like body segment. They are usually found under logs and rocks, prefer moist habitat although they can be found in the desert, often have long flexible legs (in the temperate Northern hemisphere but there are also short-legged daddy-longlegs) and they do not produce silk so therefore they are never found in webs unless they are being eaten by spiders. Because they are found under logs and other stuff which people most often are not turning over, most folks don't run into daddy-longlegs very often.

General information There are roughly 50,000-100,000 species of spiders There are two types of spiders; true spiders and tarantulas Very few spiders are dangerous to humans The six kinds of spiders that are dangerous to humans, in North America are as follows: Brown Recluse, Sac, Black Widow, Red-legged Widow, and Varied Widow The bites from these spiders cause mild reactions, death by spider bites are uncommon People should not fear spiders due to this, because they can be helpful, they kill bugs that are harmful to humans Spiders kill crop destroying bugs and bugs that can carry disease Spiders can also eat small frogs, small fish, mice, and tadpoles All spiders spin silk, but not all spiders spin webs All spiders have fangs and most have poison; both are used to kill their food In most species the female spiders are larger and stronger than the male spiders Spiders can live just about anywhere Life span depends on the temperature of the area, in temperate areas spiders may only live for one season. In warm areas spiders can live longer that one year, some can live up to 20 years

Australian Spider and Insect Bites Of all the thousands of Australian spiders, arthropods and insects, only three have bites which alone are capable of causing death - the funnel-web spider (and related atrax species), the red back spider and the paralysis tick. In most other spider or insect bites, rest and elevation, local application of ice packs and lotions, simple analgesics and antihistamines are all that is required. In some patients, anaphylactic reactions may occur after insect bites, and these may be life threatening. Please do not contact me for information on the management of spider infestations or for help with identification of a particular spider. Some other nice photos can be found on on Steves Aussie Spider Pics I have medical treatment information information for bites or envenomation from the following: Spider Bites The Sydney funnel web (and a few related atrax species) is unquestionably the most dangerous spider in Australia; the red back and the paralysis tick are the only other two arachnids with potentially fatal bites. SPIDERS
While many spider bites result in local pain and swelling, there are few Australian spiders that can cause life threatening illness or death.
Funnel web spider
The Funnel web spider species are found throughout Australia, and while the Sydney Funnel web is the best known of these, several species can be found throughout Queensland. The Funnel web spider can cause life threatening reactions, including death. For all suspected funnel web bites call 000 for an ambulance , use the pressure-immobilisation technique , and have the patient taken immediately to the emergency department of the nearest hospital . Antivenom is available.
Redback spiders
(Photo: Redback spider, courtesy of the Queensland Museum)
Redback spiders can cause a painful bite, however only about one in five patients will go on to develop whole body symptoms. Patients should see their doctor immediately if they are allergic to the red back spider venom, have heart disease or are pregnant. All other patients should follow general first aid for bites and stings
If the patient shows whole body symptoms eg. sweating, muscle aches and pains, nausea or headache, is suffering severe pain (despite first aid measures), the patient should be

General Description and Habits
Spiders can be distinguished easily from insects. All spiders have two major body regions and four pair of legs; insects have three body regions and three pair of legs. Spiders vary widely in color, shape, size, and habits. All produce venom that is poisonous to their normal prey. Few spiders are considered dangerous to humans, however. These animals are predaceous by nature and use their venom, which is injected through hollow fangs or chelicerae, to immobilize their prey. Spiders normally feed on insects and other small arthropods, but some large tropical species capture small mice, rats, birds, or fish. Spiders can only ingest liquids. Digestive fluids are either injected into the prey or regurgitated on to it. The spider then imbibes the liquified material. Spiders are generally considered beneficial because they consume large numbers of insects and are of almost no importance as disease carriers. Unfortunately, they do not differentiate between beneficial and destructive insects in their diet.

Hesperus: Oklahoma, Kansas, and middle Texas throughout the southwestern states; L. geometricus: world wide in the tropical zone. DAMAGE BIOLOGY EGGS The eggs sacs can be constructed by the females in one to three hours and are approximately 1 cm in diameter. Each female can produce 10 to 20 of these sacs during a lifetime, and each sac may contain 200 to 250 eggs. The eggs hatch within the sac in about two weeks. ADULTS The spiderlings undergo their first molt three to four days thence. In approximately 10 days they emerge from the sac through one to three holes that are about 1 mm in diameter. The spiderlings remain in the nest area for several weeks (135-240 days) where they undergo six to nine molts before reaching maturity. Female black widows can live 850 to 950 days when food is readily available. BEHAVIOR The brown widow spider is the most abundant and is commonly found in urban areas. It may be found indoors; however, favorite outdoor hiding places include the crawl space beneath homes and amongst piles of stored lumber, hollow tile blocks, abandoned vehicles, storage sheds, and stored items on shelves. Within the home, the brown widow may be found beneath tables and desks, behind shutters, in the angles of doors and windows, in the folds of clothing, in shoes, and under objects in dark, little-disturbed areas. The black widow spiders are less common and are generally associated with arid areas (western black widow) and higher elevations (southern black widow). Both can be found in crawl spaces, under rocks, in tiny voids, and in utility ducts.

Common Spiders In and Around Homes
Jeffrey Hahn, Phil Pellitteri and Donald Lewis
Spiders are a common and familiar group of arthropods. They are similar to insects in that they both have exoskeletons (their skeletons are on the outside of their bodies) and jointed legs. However, spiders differ from insects in several ways (see table 1). Table 1. Differences between spiders and insects body regions Spiders Insects two (cephalothorax, abdomen) three (head, thorax, abdomen) legs eight six eyes simple, usually eight (rarely six) compound, two wings none four (sometimes two or none) antennae none two mouthparts chelicerae (fangs) mandibles (jaws) Any arthropods that share the same characteristics as spiders are known as arachnids . Other arachnids, or spider relatives, include ticks, daddy-longlegs, scorpions, and mites. Another difference between spiders and insects is that all spiders can produce silk throughout their lifetime. However, just a few insects can produce silk, and then at only certain times during their life. Spiders use silk to build webs and other types of snares, egg cases, draglines, and refuges. Silk is also produced by spiderlings (young spiders) during a process called ballooning in which the spiderlings shoot silk into the air and are carried away by the wind.
