A Competitive Edge: Why Welsh Medium Schools Perform Better/Mantais Gystadleuol: Pam fod Ysgolion Cyfrwng Cyraeg yn Perfformio'n Well
0. Abstract.
1. Th welsh riting systm.
Th format of this pamflet, A Competitive Edge , demnstrates its bilingul credentials: it has two front covrs, one in english and one in welsh, but no bak covr. Wichevr end one starts, english or welsh, one works thru th text to paje 28, wich is a centr-paje spred wher th one languaj faces th othr upside down.
Altho ritn welsh may strike th uninitiated as unpronouncebl, its systm of sound-symbl and symbl-sound corespondnces is in fact quite regulr and far esir to mastr than that of english. Th distinctiv apearnce of th spelng is du in part to its hevy use of W as a vowl, as in cwricwlwm for english 'curriculum'. Th welsh alfabet itself difrs from th english in not using th letrs J, K, Q, V, X or Z, but givng sevrl digrafs ther own slots in th alfabetic sequence, most famusly perhaps FF and LL. It also uses ocasionl diacritics, in particulr th circumflex accent to sho long vowl valus. Its distinctivness is in part also du to its histry: despite 1,500 years of cohabitation with english on th main iland of Britn, th vocablry and spelng of welsh sho surprisingly litl english influence, as can be seen from a comparisn of th english and welsh versions of th reports title undr th main hedng abov.

86. Spelling And Literacy In Cuba And Nicaragua
However, with English spelling as it is, a similar teaching method could not be used to teach literacy in Englishspeaking schools - as a simple experiment
http://home.vicnet.net.au/~ozideas/whispanref.htm
Spelling and Literacy in Cuba and Nicaragua The Hispanic spelling system used in Cuba was simple enough before Castro's revolution, but in 1953 with more than half the children unschooled, literacy rates were around 42% in urban areas and 23.6% overall. Castro's guerrilla manifesto of 1957 included an immediate literacy campaign, with the watchword 'Revolution and education are the same thing The 1961 National Literacy Campaign reportedly reduced the level of illiteracy to 3.9%, but without their simple orthography, it might have had much less success. The straightforward spelling made it possible to use Paulo Freire's conscientisation techniques of teaching reading and writing with high-school students as teachers. However, with English spelling as it is, a similar teaching method could not be used to teach literacy in English-speaking schools - as a simple experiment would show. Lessons began with thirty key politicising words containing all letters and speech sounds, broken down into syllables from which new words and sentences can be created. To introduce the vowels and consonants, the fifteen Hispanic phrases first taught were Organisation of American States (from which Cuba had just been expelled) National institute of agrarian reform, the co-operative farm, the land, Cuban fishermen, the people's store, every Cuban a home owner, healthy people in a free Cuba, national institute of tourism, the militia, the revolution that wins all the battles, the people at work, Cuba is not alone, the year of education, poetry and the alphabet.

Grammar -
1. Go through your district standards or grade level expectations for what
students should know about grammar.
2. Make a list or a curriculum map of all that they need to learn about
grammar for their grade level and plot out where and when you will teach
each piece during the year.
3. When you teach grammar, use a context (book, selection of text, piece of student writing) that addresses the concept or "thing" you are teaching, say prepositional phrases, etc. 4. Guiding Readers and Writers, a book by Fontas and Pinnell, has a whole section on doing a Language Block as a part of reading and writing workshop. It has lots of great ideas that work. Spelling - 1. I always initally assess spelling using tests that I get from the book, Words Their Way, by Bear, et. al. These tests have 20-25 words and allow you to see where the kids are. They can be used for grouping in spelling

Unit 2 - Learning Tips -
How to improve your spelling
From... to... English spelling may be a nightmare - but Spellzone shows you there are many things you can do to help yourself improve. This Unit gives you tips on the best approach to spelling problems:
  • how to cope in everyday life how to learn those difficult words special tips for homophones -
mistakes the computer spellchecker won't spot
A. Some general tips to improve your spelling
1. First - don't despair! Some of the world's cleverest people have struggled with English spelling - you are not alone! Try out these ideas and you should soon see an improvement. When you are practising spellings, use as many senses as you can:
  • Look closely at a word, try to remember what it LOOKS like Think about the SOUND of a word -
that will often give you clues about the spelling To learn a word, WRITE it or TYPE it - or both
In this way, you are using three senses to learn a word: sight, hearing and movement - the method most experts agree is best. The Spellzone course uses this approach:
  • words are grouped by sound lists of words show you the different ways of spelling that sound there are exercises to practice each set of words by writing
    and/or typing
If you only use a keyboard, use that for your practice. You will be training your fingers to use the correct movements to spell that word or sound. However, despite the growing use of computers, most of us have to write by hand at some time - and this can be a very useful aid to learning in itself. Think about writing your name:

92. How Can Spelling And Grammar Be Improved?
teachers helpful feedback. OQE Recommends, 1. teachers should receive training in how to effectively teach spelling and grammar.
http://www.oqe.org/15.html
How Can Spelling and Grammar be Improved? Teachers need to be encouraged to use rigorous and more effective strategies for teaching spelling and grammar. Why? At present, the Ministry of Education, most faculties of education and most school boards encourage teachers to use the 'process writing' approach to teaching spelling and grammar. Using this method, the teacher encourages the students to express their creativity by writing freely, without worrying about correct spelling or grammar. "Conventional" (as opposed to 'inventive') spelling is gradually introduced in the context of the students' writing. Formal lessons in spelling are rare; in grammar, they are virtually non-existent. Some children are easy to teach; they learn no matter what the teacher does. The majority of children learn with moderately good teaching. And some children are really hard to teach; they learn only if they are taught very, very carefully. The first two groups will respond well to a mixture of process writing and formal spelling and grammar lessons. The hard-to-teach students will need a lot of extra drill and practice. Most Ontario teachers would find it difficult to provide their students with the necessary teaching, for the following reasons.

Spelling Power is a one-volume, non-workbook focused spelling program that teaches spelling using lists of most frequently used words. The book’s author, Beverly L. Adams-Gordon, builds on the assumption that phonics instruction alone isn’t sufficient to produce a good speller. Rule-based spelling has to be combined with the teaching of “visual spelling” – recognizing when a word is spelled correctly. To teach spelling in this way, Spelling Power The “Quick Start” section is followed by more detailed chapters explaining the philosophy behind the spelling program and providing extra teacher training. The bulk of the book consists of spelling lists – frequently used and frequently misspelled words, organized loosely by spelling rule. Spelling rules seem incidental to the program; they are written in small print at the head of some of the lists, but there is no method suggested for teaching spelling rules. The emphasis of the program is on visualizing and spelling correctly the most frequently occuring words in English. Each level contains a number of word “groups,” used as a basis for the daily teaching test. Levels A-F are elementary; levels E-J are high school; levels I-L are college/business level. A sample group from level D begins, “Usually /u/ is spelled u as in run,” and contains the words

Spelling making a comeback in school
By Laura Pappano, 1/25/2004 We New Englanders are so primed for competition, we risk withdrawal given a Sunday without a Pats game and a week gap between the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. ADVERTISEMENT One idea: Make nachos, invite friends over, and watch "Spellbound," an award-winning film released last week on DVD about the high-stakes face-off between children taking part in the National Spelling Bee. Seeing 13-year-olds with braces parse words like "chiaroscurist" and "demarche" is apparently as thrilling as a Rodney Harrison interception in the end zone. Well, almost. The point is something is happening around spelling. ESPN president George Bodenheimer may not have earned his top ranking in the Sporting News "Power 100" for broadcasting the National Spelling Bee finals. But people are tuning in. After decades in which teachers fretted about crimping creative expression, interest in spelling is rising. Newer research by national literacy specialists suggests that, for the most part, good spellers aren't born; they're made. And improving spelling ability is connected to improving language skills in other areas. While researchers say most of us can become better spellers with practice, some appear more "natural" as a result of being motivated readers, having a deeper understanding of language, or better vocabularies.

98. Is "meaning" The Answer To Bad Spelling?
doubts. Ramsden it seems to me has not simply written a book on how to teach spelling. It is also a polemic against spelling reform.
http://www.barnsdle.demon.co.uk/spell/spellrp.html
Is "meaning" the answer to bad spelling?
A reply to Melvyn Ramsden's Rescuing Spelling
Back to Spelling Reform Page I now realise that some of my criticism of this book goes too far so please don't skip my postscript. There are two sides to this book. On the surface it is a simple text book explaining how teachers should teach English spelling to children. Givven that he bases his approach on English as it has been constructed it is likely that there is something of value in what he has to say. On the other hand the subtext is a starry eyed celebration of English spellings 'rich tapestry' and an attack on the idea of Spelling reform. If you hav already read this book you might challenge me on the last for he doesn't once mention spelling reform but be patient I will attempt to justify that later. Ramsden's basic theme is that the teaching of spelling is in a mess because it has been forgotten that English spelling is based on ensuring that words of the same meaning hav the same spelling. Hence there are whole families of words that hav the same root and the differing meanings produced by adding prefixes and suffixes in a regular way. If the pronunciation of a word changes over time the spelling must stay fixed for otherwise its affinity to the other members of its family will be disguised. Hence machine will be spelt with a 'ch' rather than a 'sh' because this keeps the link in meaning with mechanic. The secret of spelling, when uncertain of a difficult word, is to recall a similar meaning word and spell it in the same way.
