About This Site Spelling Program by Julia Peattie On October 11th, 1996 Julia Peattie posted on a multiage listserve a description of the spelling program she uses in her 2/3 multiage classroom. Her program is "testless," using spelling books to communicate student progress to the parents. It is another excellent way for students to learn how to spell in a multiage setting. With her permission I have reposted it here. You don't have to do lists and tests to teach spelling! From what I have seen of the list/test methods, the kids learn the words temporarily and then forget them. They can get a word right on their test and then spell it wrong a week later, because the spelling program is focused on words, not strategies. The kids with great visual discrim do well on the list/test, others do not. I DO teach spelling. I teach strategies and spelling patterns all over the place. This year I am putting some of the spelling work into spelling books so that I can SHOW parents that we are really working on it. If a child isn't sure how to spell something they have them try all the ways they can think of to spell the word, and then pick the one that looks best. They do it automatically in speech, even though they don't know that they are blending sounds together. It took a great linguistic genius way back when the alphabet was invented to break up the consonant blends into their separate sounds. But that became easy to do with the alphabet letters representing each irreducible speech sound. And today, it's easy for a child to learn by showing that the blends consist of separate sounds "blended" together. When to Teach Blends When should you teach the blends? You can start after the child has learned the short-vowel sounds, all of the consonants, and can read many simple three-letter words. But before you go into the blends, you should teach the consonant digraphsthe two-letter combinations that stand for one soundsuch as th, sh, chso that the child can read such words as wish, rich, the, that, this, with, etc. You can begin teaching the blends before you even teach the long vowels. In fact, I highly recommend teaching the blends entirely with short-vowel words because they are easier to learn with what has already been mastered.

I can think of no subject we teach more poorly or harbor more myths about than spelling.Richard Gentry, 1987 Background For decades, more people seem to have considered themselves poor spellers than good spellers, despite the fact that most of us spell correctly the vast majority of the words we write. With spelling, we seem to expect that all of us should spell one hundred percent correctly, even on first drafts, and even as young children. Perhaps it is this unrealistic expectation that leads some parents and others to object when teachers use newer methods of helping children learn to spell, such as encouraging children to "use invented spelling" in their early attempts to write. Such critics mistakenly assume that children who initially use approximate spellings will never become good spellers, or that if the time-honored method of memorizing spelling lists were used instead, every child would become a perfect speller. Neither observed experience nor research supports these assumptions.
