#75. Window Shade Vocab and Spelling
Reading/Writing, level: all
Posted by Jill M (
Materials Required: window shade, post-it notes.
Concepts Taught: spelling, vocabulary
I am a graduate student in elem. education. One way to teach vocabulary
is to take roll- down window shades and attach them to the walls. Then,
write each vocabulary word on a post-it note and place all the post-its on
the window shade. During the week, instruct the students to take turns
going to the shade, taking a post-it note with a vocabulary word written on
it, and take it back to their desk to practice writing it and studying its
meaning. After they have done this, have the students return the post-it note to the shade and repeat the procedure until every student has had an opportunity to learn and work with every word. They could keep all of the information they aquire about that week's vocabulary words in a vocabulary journal. When it comes time for the vocalulary test, simply pull on the window shade and it will roll up. This actual was designed for spelling, however; it can be adapted for vocabulary. It is also just a way to

What Do I Do with My Spelling Books?
    by
Cheryl M. Sigmon At times on the 4-Blocks mailring here at Teachers.net, members ask questions about subjects they used to teach and how it is that those subjects can be "overlooked" now with the 4-Blocks method of instruction. The subjects mentioned are usually spelling, grammar, and handwriting. Today's column is devoted to one of those changedbut definitely not forgottensubjects, spelling. First, does the 4-Blocks Model include spelling? Yes, it is clearly a part of the model, even though there's no block called spelling . Spelling is integrated in several ways, though perhaps most prominently in the Words Block. Let's look at specific activities throughout the day in the 4-Blocks classroom that provide us the opportunity to teach spelling. Daily the students are spending at least 10 minutes on the Word Wall words which are the high frequency words they use often in their writing and encounter frequently in their reading. They are developing automaticity with these words so that they will not hesitate with decoding these words in their reading or with applying them in their writing. In other words, knowledge of these words helps with their fluency in both of those areas. Additionally, we teach that many of these Word Wall words have spelling/rhyming patterns that will enable the students to spell many other words that rhyme with this wordfor example, if you can spell

(reprinted with permission from the College of Education, University of Oregon's
1994 Annual Conference Monograph, 1994) Editor's note: In 1999, The Riggs Institute revised the phonograms to bring them into somewhat closer compliance with Merriam-Webster's 10th Collegiate Edition and added plural and syllabication rules. The links used will reflect.
Myrna T. McCulloch N umerous research articles in recent years have examined the merits of phonics instruction versus a "whole language" or integrated approach to teaching language skills to primary students. Indeed "the great debate" has grown increasingly shrill and pointedly insistent that the two theories must remain mutually exclusive. Only more recently a few researchers and synthesizers of research have suggested that at least portions of these two approaches to reading instruction could, and probably should, be combined for the ultimate advantage of the student.
Our proposition here is to show precisely how this can be accomplished even within the ever-decreasing availability of instructional time in today's busy classrooms. I have chosen a question and answer format for clarity, practicality and conservation of space.

    About Us
In Brief: Who we are , What we teach, and Why
The Riggs Institute is a self-supporting non-profit literacy agency. We support our iteracy initiatives (curriculum, "awareness of the issues," training and assistance in collaborative efforts across the English speaking world) through the sale of our curriculum materials, training and tutorial services, which are in keeping with our I.R.S. status as a 501 (c) (3) agency. We operate under a 7-member board of directors all of whom are unpaid, voluntary positions. Our method of instruction, , is based on Romalda and Walter Spalding's The Writing Road to Reading (WRTR) , which, in turn, is based on the research of Dr. Samuel T. Orton, a neuropathologist/brain surgeon who researched the functioning of the human brain in learning language (1923 - 1948). His work, with assistance from successful classroom teachers, who still taught the Webster-Oxford collaboration on phonetics and correct spelling with rules of the 1850's, involved reteaching brain-damaged World War I veterans, to speak again, to read, write, spell, read, etc. These teachers, including Romalda Spalding, were trained in English orthography in colleges of education or normal schools prior to the introduction and wide dissemination of the "look-say" (whole-word memorization)

    Why Johnny Can't...
    Don't Teach Spelling
    1997 September 24
    Wednesday
Spelling was one of those things that I didn't learn in school. It's almost as if I knew there would be a much easier way to learn to spell if I just waited a while. What happened, of course, is that about the time I turned 35, I got a computer with a spelling checker. I quickly discovered all those words I had been misspelling for decades. In about a month I had learned to spell. Spelling is a singularly useless chore. In some languages it doesn't exist at all. If you know how to say a word, you know how to spell it. English is certainly a rich language, but that richness has its price. The richness came from all the various languages that went into making English, and unfortunately each one left a scar on English spelling. But now the question: Why teach spelling if kids will learn it as soon as they are provided with computers that show them each misspelled word and explain what the possible correct words are (along with the meaning of each)? Spelling is the kind of learning that kids hate and that drains their enthusiasm for school. Just give it up. They'll learn to spell anyway. E-mail jhcrawford.com

DO SPELL CHECKERS teach? Can a spell checker in a word processor teach spelling? You bet! spelling it. Do spelling checkers teach? Sure do.
    http://www.ocis.net/~dturner/magazine/arca326.htm
DO SPELL CHECKERS TEACH? Can a spell checker in a word processor teach spelling? You bet! Spelling research shows that there is still a place for children to learn a set of spelling words from lists, but, like adults, words learned in the context of a task are better learned. Contrary to public opinion, the use of a spelling checker in a word processor has as much and maybe more potential for students than the traditional "use your dictionary". Consider the context in which a spell checker is used. The student is using a word processor to say what he wants to say when suddenly the checker presents him with misspelled word. The checker doesn't correct the word, but identifies it as misspelled, and then suggests a list of possibles. The student used this spelling: faet. The checker offers feet, fete, and feat. The puzzle remains: which meaning was intended: the plural of foot? a special event? or an amazing accomplishment? It is here that a dictionary call would be useful, and if the word processor offers one that might be the best response, but if not, then a book form must be found. Is learning taking place? No doubt about it! How do adults learn to spell new words?

(binder ready) Price $49.95 Each Overview: When you include Spelling Power in your curriculum, you'll see almost immediate results and these results will continue to multiply as your students master the 5,000 words children and adults use and misspell most frequently. Requiring just 15 minutes a day, Spelling Power is totally individualized. Everything needed to teach each of your students spelling skills to the college level is contained in this one easy-to-use, step-by-step curriculum manual. Placement tests tell you exactly where each of your students should begin. Once their placement level has been determined, your students will use the research proven test-study-test method, along with immediate self-correction, to master word lists which are organized by phonetic principles and spelling rules. Additional words which your students need to master are discovered and added to your Spelling Power program from your students' own writing errors using the resources provided. Your students will continue to study each of these words until they have spelled them correctly at least once. Then Spelling Power's spiral curriculum approach of repeated, spaced review will assure your students master every word they study. And your students will master them! The six levels of built-in review assure that every word taught will be mastered.

    Spelling Power Reviews Cathy Duffy
Christian Curriculum Manuals Originally designed to teach spelling to an older student with spelling problems, this very comprehensive spelling program uses a base list of about 5,000 frequently used words. (A list of the 12,000 most frequently used and misspelled words is included as a separate section. It codes each word showing when it should be taught, by grade level and in correlation with Spelling Power .) These words are broken down into groups with common elements. Diagnostic Tests place the students at the proper beginning point in the list. Then each student progresses at his own rate, studying only those words with which he is having trouble. Frequently used words are reviewed periodically to insure retention. A ten-step study process is used for each group of words to be learned. Parental teacher involvement is essential, although we can note daily activities on the study sheet for students to do on their own. Once you have used this system for a while, both parent and child should become familiar enough with the process that students do much of their work independently. The interaction required between teacher and child actually make this program more ideal for homeschoolers than for the regular classroom.
