http://www.auburn.edu/~murraba/letbox.html
The Letterbox Lesson You can now read about the letterbox lesson in the March 1999 issue of The Reading Teacher The Reading Teacher The letterbox lesson is a phonics lesson in which children are led to analyze the phoneme sequence in a word, first by spelling the word and then by reading it. The lesson can be taught to one student or to a class. There are always two parts to a letterbox lesson: spelling words and reading them. Rationale . Children need to understand the alphabetic principle that spellings map the phoneme sequence of spoken words. A clear demonstration of this principle is in learning to spell words before learning to read them. Children usually pay closer attention to letter-phoneme correspondences when spelling words than when reading them. In the letterbox lesson, they spell the words before they read them in order to transfer this sounding-out strategy from spelling to reading. This helps them learn words thoroughly enough to remember them as sight words. Materials . Letter manipulatives can be cut from card stock, printed on paper and laminated, or purchased as wooden, plastic, or magnetic letters. Each student will need a complete set of capital and lower case letters, with extra copies of lower case vowels and common consonants. Laminating paper manipulatives will make them more durable. Class letter sets may be stored in zipper bags.

Mastering New Words for Writing By Diane Snowball A seven-year-old recently told me that instead of the whole class learning the same spelling words, students would be better off learning the words they wanted to use for their own writing. Smart kid! So how do we help children select and learn relevant words?
Strategy 1: Proofreading
As soon as children are spelling some words conventionally, encourage them to proofread: Underline words they think are wrong, and then try to get them right. A Try-It-Out sheet (with columns for First Try, Second Try, Third Try, and Correct Spelling) can help. Children try each word two or three ways and then use a resource to check the spellings. This is also useful for charting spelling growth.
Strategy 2: Choosing Words
Strategy 3: Learning Words

Learning High-Frequency Words By Diane Snowball The 100 most frequently used words make up about half of the written English language. Here are strategies I use to help students learn to spell these words.
Strategy 1: Chart the Words
To underscore the idea of high-frequency words, I have students keep a list of the words they encounter most often in their own reading and writing. I later supply them with a chart like our 100 Most Common High-Frequency Words . (Students can keep this chart of high-frequency words in their writing folder or notebook and check off each word as they learn it. In the younger grades, display this list on your word wall at eye level.) I like older students to check early in the year if they know how to spell all high-frequency words. If not, they need to set personal goals to learn them. With younger students, we make learning high-frequency words an early priority, along with trying unknown words.
Strategy 2: Break Bad Habits
It's very difficult for students to break the habit of a misspelling if they do it for a few weeks. I carefully observe students' writing, and if I see they are consistently misspelling the same high-frequency word, I say, "I notice you are using that word often in your writing, so let's find out and learn the correct spelling."

While Word can't give a student the skills essential to writing a meaningful, coherent essay, Word can certainly provide the tools that make it easier for the student to focus on ideas, tone, and words, rather than on the technicalities of just getting words on paper (even electronic paper). The ability to experiment with structure and formatting, to really "see" how an essay looks, can help the young writer see how her ideas come together. Likewise, making a habit of proofreading ensures that the writer takes one last read-through of an essay before she hands it off. In Word the Outline view, the spelling and grammar checker features, and the Thesaurus can ease the difficult road to writing a great essay. Here's how.

General Education .... Spelling Fish
Introduction
I saw this idea used at my sons infant school. Words you want your child to learn to spell are written on the scales of a fish. When your child can spell the word they can colour the scale. The activity could be adapted as a simple word reading activity for those children who are not yet ready to try learning to spell words.
Spelling Fish
This fish has various words written on each scale (suitable for an average 7 year old) It is available to download as an Adobe Acrobat fish1.pdf file from our downloads page This fish is blank so you can practice whichever words you choose. It is available to download as an Adobe Acrobat fish_blank.pdf file from our downloads page
Adaptations
  • Use fish with only a few scales. Use other pictures - you could have words written on the petals of a flower. We have used words written on the sections of a tortoise shell. Or feathers on a bird with outstreched wings.

Spelling strategies
Strategies for solving words Students should be encouraged to reflect on their learning and the strategies they apply in the spelling process (metacognition). Students need to develop the language to talk about their learning. These strategies should be explicit taught and constantly referred to in the classroom.
How do I spell a new word?
  • Think about meaning. Does it give you any clues to spelling patterns? Say the word slowly listen carefully. Write the word syllable-by-
syllable. Make sure you have represented each sound with a letter or letters. Look carefully to see if the pattern looks right Try different patterns that might be right See if you know another word which is similar Ask yourself what it means Begin with the base word

39. About English - Spelling
teach students how to learn words and how to check spelling of words they have attempted; Make students aware of processes for trying to write new words.
http://www.discover.tased.edu.au/english/six.htm
Especially for Teachers - About English
Six spelling principles
Many educators believe that there are six important principles of spelling. Teachers have an essential role in increasing students' interest in words and in influencing their attitudes toward spelling. Students need to feel they are able to succeed in learning to spell.
How to translate this into classroom practice?
  • Provide frequent opportunities to write for a range of purposes and audiences Provide a print rich environment that includes displays of letters, words, and word patterns on Word Walls Ensure students proofread their writing to identify possible spelling errors Select words from their have-a-go pad to put into their spelling journal Respond to the messages in children's writing by writing back to them. Make use of words that are misspelt in order to model the correct spelling
When teachers understand spelling development , they can match teaching strategies to developmental needs. Records can be kept showing the developmental indicators, strategies and skills that children are using by monitoring students' writing. In this way, teachers can decide when and how it is appropriate to intervene. Teachers are able to determine what students already know about spelling and they can then build on that knowledge.
