Emergent Reader
The following lesson plans are suggested for students who are emergent readers . Emergent readers are defined as students who cannot recognize words out of context . On the PALS-K Concept of Word task, emergent readers would have scored 5 or below on the COW word list administered after the poem exercise. First graders (and sometimes even second and third graders) who are emergent readers do not read many words on the preprimer word list on the PALS 1-3 Word Recognition in Isolation task.   Other characteristics associated with emergent readers are:
  • Incomplete knowledge of the alphabet and letter sounds
On the end-of-year PALS-K assessment or beginning-of-the-year PALS 1-3 assessment, emergent readers would not have met the benchmark on lower-case Alphabet Recognition (24) or Letter Sounds (20).

For the sake of simplicity, in this lesson plan the words homophone and homonym will differ in meaning and origin, whether or not they share the same spelling.
http://www.cloudnet.com/~edrbsass/justalittlehorse.htm
A Horse is a Hoarse, Of Course, Of Coarse
A Lesson Plan on Homonyms/Homophones Purpose : This activity is designed to teach students about homonyms (or homophones) by means of cooperative learning. Though it is intended for intermediate-grade students, it could easily be adapted to other grade levels. Background : Homophones are words that are pronounced the same but differ in meaning and origin. They may also differ in spelling. The word homonym is currently most often used as a synonym for homophone. However, some teachers, writers, and wordsmiths still like to differentiate between the two, using homonym to refer only to words with the same sound and the same spelling , but with different meanings, such as bear (the animal) and bear (carry). These writers prefer that the word homophone be used only for words with the same sound, but with different spellings and different meanings, such as bear (the animal) and bare (unclothed). To confuse matters further, the word homograph is used to refer to words with the same spelling but different pronunciations and different meanings , such as polish (shine) and Polish (the language).

Printable Version for your convenience! Spelling Battleship Grades 3-12 by Alisha Gilkison Objective: The students will practice spelling vocabulary, make use of a grid, and develop a positive attitude toward learning. Materials: A makeshift battleship gameboard. A-E/1-6 Procedure: Have each student pick a given number of spelling words from the list and write them arbitrarily on the battleship grid. They must have a partner for this game. The first player guesses a coordinate. For example, B-2. If there is a word in that box the second player tells them the word. The first player must spell it correctly to gain a point. If the first player does not spell it correctly, he/she does not get the point and loses the turn. However, they may guess the coordinate again. The first student to get all the words spelled correctly wins. E-Mail Alisha

93. Lesson Plan: Spelling With Memory Cues
Because this site originates in the USA, spelling in this lesson plan is based on the way words are spelled here unless there are memory cues for both systems.
http://www.gate.net/~labooks/xLPspelling.html
Based on one of the lesson plans in Little Lemon: Activities for Developing Motivation and Memory Skills Lesson Plans from Learning Abilities Books. LESSON PLAN: Spelling with Memory Cues
List of Words
Send Suggestions Age group: This is for any age; however, younger children need help in selecting relevant, non-ambiguous associations, e. g. see the explanation about how to spell the word, color. Rationale: Many poor spellers remember how to spell words correctly by using memory cues. Use these activities to teach children in K-5 and upper grades to apply techniques used by memory experts. The basic memory principle in this lesson plan is to associate, or link, something you need to remember to something you already know. It might be a silly association or a logical association. It just needs to be a memorable association. Learning the basic rules of spelling is highly recommended. This lesson plan is not meant to replace other methods of teaching. However, this works as a great alternative when other methods fail. We tell children to begin a word at the left. Some children don't want to admit that they don't know left from right. They might need the lesson titled

They draw on their prior experience, their interactions with other readers and writers, their knowledge of word meaning and of other texts, their word identification strategies, and their understanding of textual features (e.g., sound-letter correspondence, sentence structure, context, graphics). National Institute for Literacy—Reading First/Vocabulary Instruction: Students learn vocabulary directly when they are explicitly taught both individual words and word-learning strategies. Direct vocabulary instruction aids reading comprehension.

Weekly Spelling Lessons
By Jim Cornish, Gander, Newfoundland, Canada.
Below is a list of some of spelling units I use with my grade five class. Each unit is four pages long. List words are based on units of instruction, themes and special occasions. New lessons are added periodically. These are free to teachers, home-schoolers and teachers in training. All comments/criticisms are welcomed! Each lesson begins with an activity requiring students to list the words in alphabetical order. I use this as a pre-test. If the student can't write the word without looking at the word list, then this is a word they have to work on over the week. The Hodge-Podge lessons are lists based on common spelling mistakes my students have made in their writing. The spelling lessons are saved in Adobe PDF 5.0 format and require Adobe's Acrobat Reader 5.0, a free plug-in for your browser. You can download it free of charge at Adobe. You are free to use these spelling lessons. Please email me,
