THE TAHITIAN ACADEMY The Tahitian Academy was created by a vote of the Territorial Assembly on August 2, 1972. It was inaugurated on July 2, 1974 by the Governor Daniel Videau and its statutes were approved by the Territorial Assembly on December 5, 1974. The Academy is aimed at safeguarding and enriching the Tahitian language, normalislng the vocabulary, the grammar and the spelling, promoting the publication of books in Tahitian as well as the generalized teaching of the language. Since its foundation, the Academy has written, in collaboration with the Territorial Education Service, the books used for teaching Tahitian in the primary schools. In 1987 it wrote and published a huge grammar (T: tarame) of the Tahitian language (500 ex. in bond version and 2,500 ex. in paperback version) aimed at enacting precise official grammatical and orthographical rules. It searches for the translation of words related to specialized fields of activity (navigation, medicine, meteorology, etc) for which it has until now published two vocabularies. The Academy has also published two volumes of words of contemporary Tahitian which were not listed in the usual dictionaries. Each year, it organizes literary competitions aimed at finding the best works from which abstracts are thereafter published in anthologies by the Academy. Until now two such anthologies have been printed.

The Web abounds with sites teaching grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Not surprisingly, most of these sites are provided by educational institutions, teachers, or business-writing consultants, presumably to make up for the lack of grammar teaching in so many school systems for the past several decades. Some are tutorials (masquerading as style guides) for technical communicators. Here are a few sites that I have found useful or that other people have recommended to me. Some of my users are experiencing a strange problem, where MS Word will inexplicably switch to the french dictionary when spell-checking their documents.
It doesn't happen all the time, and there appears to be no logic to it. I've tried switching back to the english dictionary, but it doesn't stick (reverts to french again).
I've also gone into the MS Office language settings panel, and disabled french (and so forth), but it appears to have no effect.
What is going on? And more importantly, how do I prevent this from happening? Thanks!

Everyone has stories about "bad" spell checkers or grammar checkers suggesting something silly (which often makes it into the final document). Now, some researchers are studying just how much people rely on the little squiggly red and green lines in Microsoft Word. What they found is that, while it brings up the quality of poor writers, it makes good writers worse - since they start to rely on the spell checker completely, while ignoring their own instincts. This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

Spelling and Grammar on the World Wide Web

There is little more irritating that to read pages on the web where the publishers have no clue about how to spell or how to use proper English-language structures such as grammar and punctuation. We are all guilty of these lapses to one extent or another, but many people appear to either be ignorant of the rules or else just don't bother to proofread what they write before submitting it for the world to see. Good web pages require proper spelling, grammar, punctuation and syntax to convey a message that is coherent and meaningful. Today's world of personal computers offers many programs which have excellent utilities and tools to help us out when we don't know the rules of the English language or when we are too busy to administer them on our own. Common mistakes are everywhere, and they convey a negative image of the author, especially if being read by well educated people and even more especially if what is being read is intended to elicit business for the author. Some spell checkers do just that single function, while others also check grammar. The two work hand in hand. If grammar is not checked then one could properly spell a word but misuse it because it is a homonym, a word which sounds the same or similar, but is spelled differently and has a different meaning. For instance, the words "they're", "there" and "their" sound almost identical the way many people say them, but their meanings are as different as night and day. The same can be said if "illicit" and "elicit". And, there are many other examples where the use of the wrong word can cast a shadow over the author.
