The charter of the Cavers Mailing List
The Cavers Mailing List (CML) has been created in May, 1993 as an open forum to assist the contacts and information exchange among speleologists and cavers of ex-USSR. CML is moderated, i.e., there is a moderator whose opinion should be observed. The usual language is Russian. English is allowed. It is a duty of the moderator to publish the charter every three months. All messages concerning speleology or caving are not breaking the charter if they are not offensive for anybody from the subscribers. It is forbidden to publish the non-textual information, as well as messages larger than 20K, without a permission of the moderator. The descriptions of expeditions, discussion of techniques and tactics of cave passing, caving equipment, scientific messages related to speleology, questions of general development of speleology and caving etc are welcome. The use of the notations accepted in others maillists is welcome: if the Subject field begins with "[H]", it is a request for the help, with "[Q]" it's a question, with "Re:" it's an answer to someone's earlier message. The use of the symbol '>' in the beginning of the lines of quotations is also welcome. The Subject field of official messages begins with three stars (***) what it is forbidden for other messages.

    Speleology
    and Caving
There are caves in all parts of the world. While most people think of them as just "holes in the ground", caves actually represent a very important geologic feature. They provide an environment that is protected from the more destructive forces of our planet's surface. As such, they give us a view back to historical events and to many years of geologic processes. Caves are found in rock, lava, and ice strata around the world. They are formed in rock by the acidic dissolution of limestone, sandstone, marble, and granite (solution caves), or by the freeze/thawing action in mountains (talus caves). The hydraulics of volcanic lava flows form 'lava tubes' in the subsequently-cooled lava beds. The freezing/thawing cycles within glaciers and ice fields generate 'ice caves'. The wind-whipping action on sea waves form 'sea caves' in the base of cliffs along the perimeter of the world's oceans. Speleology is the science of cave and karst studies. Karst is the cave-bearing landform found throughout the world. Scientists are drawn to cave research because of the closed nature of the ecosystem and the unique varieties of deposits to be found. Many different disciplines are included under the general umbrella of "speleology". A few are:
    • 'Geology/Geography' is the study of karst landforms and the cave distribution in them.

    Mixture Corrosion

Mixture Corrosion is an important principle of the dissolution of limestone by groundwater in karst areas. The mixing of two different waters with different amounts of carbon dioxide (CO , both originally saturated with calzite, results in a mixture which is undersaturated and capable of further calcite dissolution. The reason for this behaviour is the non-linear relationship between calcite solubility and carbon dioxide partial pressure. Image: The black curve shows the non-linear relationship between calcite solubility and carbon dioxide partial pressure. It shows the maximum CaCO water can hold with a certain amount of CO . All waters with less CaCO , represented by positions below the curve, are called undersaturated Waters W and W , represented by two red dots, have a different amount of CO , but both are saturated. Mixing the two waters is a linear operation, symbolized by the linear red line. So the mixing at a certain proportion, in this example 1:1, leads to point M , representing the mixture.
