Cave Dwelling Bats of East Gippsland
Bats are one of the most fascinating mammals in the world. They are divided into two groups. Megabats (megachiroptera) are the flying foxes or fruit bats. They eat fruit, nectar, blossoms and the like, and use sight to search for food and to navigate. Microbats (microchiroptera), of which almost all species eat insects, mainly use echo location to navigate. Although the subject of some debate, these two groups appear to have developed the ability to fly by independent evolutionary paths. The microbats evolved many millions of years ago and have filled their ecological niche so neatly that they have barely changed since. Of the 14 species of microbats found in East Gippsland, three are trogloxenes - they spend the daylight hours in caves. The remaining 11 species are forest dwelling bats which roost in hollows inside trees during the daylight hours.
Distribution of cave dwelling bats in Victoria The microbats of East Gippsland range in size from 5 to 45 grams. All 14 species eat insects and, because small animals use up energy very quickly, they must consume enormous quantities. For example, a fully mature female Common Bentwing Bat consumes about one third of her own body weight in insects each night.
General Ecology of Cave Dwelling Bats
The cave dwelling bats in East Gippsland are quite small - any of the three species would easily fit into a child's cupped hand. Despite their diminutive size these bats have a major effect on insect populations because of their voracious appetites and their large numbers.

    About SRSC

The Romanian Speleology Karstology Society is an NGO founded in 1990 and aims to explore and protect the Romanian karstic areas.
Its activity was primarely based on volunteers, including the four hundred active members, partner caving clubs and various environment organizations. The Romanian Speleology Karstology Society is under direct scientific coordination of the Romanian Academy and The Speleogical Institute "Emil Racovita".
In the last three years, the activity of Romanian Speleology Karstology Society consisted in:
    - science-education (training and courses for all fields of interest)
    - awareness-information (issuing a periodical magazine "Ecocarst" since 2000)
    - specific activities for environment protection and conservation (environmental cleaning expeditions)

    Caving vs. Spelunking
Clay Perry wrote about a group of men and boys who explored and studied caves throughout New England . This group referred to themselves as spelunkers . This is regarded as the first use of the word in the Americas . Throughout the spelunking was the general term used for exploring caves in US English. It was used freely, without any positive or negative connotations, although only rarely outside the US where 'caving' has always been called 'caving'. In the , the term "spelunking" began to convey the idea of amateurs, using unreliable light sources and cotton clothing. In , Steve Knutson (editor of American Caving Accidents ) made the following distinction: ..."Note that I use the term "spelunker" to denote someone untrained and unknowledgeable in current exploration techniques, and "caver" for those who are."

    What is a cave?
A cave is a natural opening in the ground extending beyond the zone of light and large enough to permit the entry of man. Occurring in a wide variety of rock types and caused by widely differing geological processes, caves range in size from single small rooms to interconnecting passages many miles long. The scientific study of caves is called speleology (from the Greek words spelaion for cave and logos for study). It is a composite science based on geology, hydrology, biology, and archaeology, and thus holds special interest for earth scientists of the U.S. Geological Survey.
Interest in caves has not dwindled. Although firm figures for cave visitors are not available, in 1974 about 1.5 million people toured Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, and more than 67O,000 visited Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, two of the most famous caves in the United States.
    Types of Caves
A simple classification of caves includes four main types and several other relatively less important types.

3MONTH SEMINAR ON SCIENTIFIC AND ATHLETIC SPELEOLOGY
The 54year old creative work of the Hellenic Speleological Society (H.S.S.) continues with a reviewed and enriched Speleological Seminar with theoretical and practical courses.
It is an educational program of different approach for people interested in nature, creative hobby and the enrichment of their knowledge and experience on geology, palaeontology, biology, archaeology, topography, geography, climatology, anthropology, oryctology, microtectonic, geophysics etc that are connected with caves. Also applications on the use of computers in caves, the geological cartography, the geological photography, the endurance of the speleological equipment, the speleo-rescue first aid, the speleodiving etc. Expert scientists, University Professors, Experienced Speleologists and speleodivers teach the above subjects, and thus consist a guarantee for the proper training of those taking the courses. The theoretical courses will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 20:00 to 22:00 and will be completed in 3 months. The cycle of the 35 basic theoretical courses is accompanied by a slight projection and is complemented by practical courses that take place every Sunday in caves of Attica and outdoors, with the trainers-speleologists and the full technical equipment of the H.S.S. The courses will begin during the second half of March 2003 until the second half of June 2003.
