It includes the measuring and mapping of caves and reporting on the flora and fauna found in them. One application of speleology is the tracing of the movement of underground waters to prevent water pollution. See R. Pinney, The Complete Book of Cave Exploration (1962); D. R. There isn't a Manual of Caver Information , but the following list will give you a good basic grounding in Missouri Geology, Biology, Natural History, and Basic Caving Techniques. More specific information on certain topics can be obtained from issues of Missouri Speleology , by contacting the NSS, and Missouri Caving Grottos, and the publications divisions of the Missouri Dept. of Conservation and Dept. of Natural Resources, Geological Survey and Resource Assessment Division, both of which have many books and pamphlets for sale. Most of these books are available through public libraries, or through interlibrary loan. A few may be obtained only through cave specialty bookstores, such as the NSS bookstore. A few are hard to get, but they are invaluable for what they provide. GENERAL SPELEOLOGY

Tufa is calcium carbonate, CaCO , formed
  • in stalactites, stalagmites, and other deposits in limestone caves, as incrustations around mouths of hot and cold calcareous springs along streams carrying large amounts of calcium carbonate in solution
It is also called travertine or dripstone.
Image: the tufa cave in Germany Tufa Caves are primary caves formed during the deposition of the tufa itself. This happens near karst springs, when biologic processes remove the CO from the water and the calcium carbonate starts to deposit. The limestone often forms lakes and waterfalls, similar to rimstone pools, but the growth of the limestone is very much influenced by the growth of plants. Often biologic remains are "fossilized" in this limestone. The formation of caves starts with a rim of those pools. Along the rim, the water of the pond falls down to the next level of pools. As the water deposits limestone at the rim, the rim grows outward. Sometimes it is not stable enough to carry its own weight, so it breaks down and forms a wall of debris some meters in front of the rim. The cave is complete, when the extent of the rim and the debris at the floor meet. So this tells us much about how those caves look like:
  • The rims run across the valley, very seldom and only for some meters they run along the valley. So do the caves.

Image: a small cave river (at least at the time this picture was taken, the river was small) in the Grotte d'Aze , France. River caves are caves containing a cave river. Although they are much harder to explore than dry caves (because of the cold water) some of the most famous early cave explorations were made into river caves. The idea of those explorers was often, to discover the subterranean path of the water. This sometimes had financial and political background, as knowledge about the water was necessary for drinking water supply, for water mills and for fishing. Image: a so called dolly tub , produced by water turning around rocks and gravel and thus drilling a hole into the floor. This dolly tub is in the Grottes des Planches , France. The first modern cave exploration was made 27-JUN-1888 by Eduard Alfred Martel . and is often called the birthday of Speleology. It was the exploration of the underground river of the Martel made the first through-crossing of the plateau de Camprieu in Southern France, following the cave river.

It depends on deposits of gypsum or anhydrite, often also called alabaster . Chemically it is calcium sulfate CaSO Gypsum is much rarer than limestone, as it needs very special conditions:
  • You need a depression , in which sea water is trapped and evaporated to form gypsum deposits. It has to be an arid part of the world.
gypsum is deposited when sea water is evaporated by the sun and the concentration of numerous salts in the water grows. rain would revert this process and solute the gypsum. With temporary connection to the sea
There must be a continuous or periodical (sea) water afflux, to allow the deposit of a decent amount of gypsum. If there is no (temporary) connection to the sea, the layer would be rather thin.
  • Now you have gypsum, but there is another problem: water is able to solute gypsum without the complicated

39 countries including Lebanon participated in the 13th International Congress of Speleology in Brasilia. During the first general assembly of the UIS, Lebanon was at the center of the action when Julia James president of the UIS paid her respects to the great speleologists that have left this world particularly Albert Anavy from Lebanon. General Secretary Pavel Bosak then indicated that the most important speleological event since the last congress in Switzerland was the Middle Speleology Symposium organized by the Speleo Club du Liban in Lebanon. The Speleo Club du Liban obtained support to establish an International Documentation Center in the SCL club in Qannabet Broummana. Paolo Forti (ex UIS President) and Patrick Deriaz (responsible for the International UIS Library in Switzerland) promised to supply this future documentation center with copies from their libraries. The UIS agreed to the proposal of the SCL aiming at translating the UIS status into Arabic. So far the status was only translated into Italian.
