    Alexandrine Pieternella Francoise Tinne
Alexandrine Pieternella Francoise Tinne was born in The Hague, Netherlands (Holland), on October 17, 1835. She was a Dutch explorer of northern Africa, but it was strange to have a female explorer going to different continents at that time. She wanted to map the White Nile in Sudan, Africa, as her goal. In 1861, she went on her first expedition on the Nile with her aunt and mother. She traveled to Gondokoro, Sudan, where she was supposed to meet the British explorer John Hanning Speke. However, he never showed and she went to find the Nile's source by herself. She went west near the Gazelle River (Bahr al-Ghazal) and the Sobat River, investigating near Lake Chad, especially the Nile Basin. Sadly, her mother and aunt and a few others died of fever during her expedition. In 1863, Alexandrine made her expedition to the upper Nile again. She entered a region called the Azande near the northeastern basin of the Congo River. But, after this expedition, she lived in Cairo, Egypt, until 1867. In 1869, Alexandrine picked up her African explorations again. She wanted to be the first woman to traverse the Sahara Desert. She was waiting for an Arab caravan to take her southward when she was sidetracked and decided to go with guides to see the Tuareg tribes and their nomadic tendencies. Near Ghat, Libya, on August 1, 1869, she was robbed and murdered by those Tuareg guides in the desert of Libya on route from Tripoli to Lake Chad. She had been about to visit those Tuareg tribesmen that killed her.

The earliest inhabitants of Uganda were hunters and gatherers who lived more than 50,000 years ago and whose stone axes have been found near the villages of Mweya and Kagera in the southwest and at Paraa in the northwest. Their descendants retreated to the mountains between 2,500 and 3,000 years ago when Bantu-speaking farmers moved into forested areas and cleared the land for crops. Iron smelting by Bantu-speaking cultures has been dated from 2,500 years ago, and Bantu pottery from 1,500 years ago. Bantu-speakers near the shores of Lake Victoria developed the banana as a staple food about 1,000 years ago. Between 600 and 700 years ago the Chwezi, a Bantu subgroup, established settlements at Bigo in western Uganda. The Chwezi were depicted in legends as supernatural, but probably were the ancestors of the region's present-day Hima and Tutsi herders.

    Explorers of Africa
    by Aaron Stutz
Class of 1997 B efore the age of European imperialism in Africa, the interior of the continent was all but unknown to European civilization. Prior to the colonial interests of the major European nations, the age of exploration in Africa opened up many parts of the continent's interior. Numerous expeditions, notably those of Dr. David Livingstone, Sir Richard Burton, John Hanning Speke, Heinrich Barth, de Brazza, and Sir Henry Stanley, facilitated the rapid colonization of Africa by making known features of potential interest. These explorers were the key that would open up entirely new issues of rivalry and conflict between the European powers of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, ultimately contributing to the opening shots of World War One. One of the first, and most well-known, explorers to penetrate the interior of Africa was Dr. David Livingstone, a British physician and missionary. He was sent to South Africa as a medical missionary during 1840, and his subsequent expeditions and discoveries caused many parts of the extant maps of Africa to be redrawn. Among his many important contributions are his discovery and exploration of the Zambezi river in its entirety, as well as several African lakes. During a visit to England in 1865, he wrote Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambezi and its Tributaries, exposing the slave trade of the Arabs and the Portuguese, as well as revealing the commercial possibilities of the Zambezi region. Dr. Livingstone marked the beginning of the influx of explorers into Africa's interior.

It seems incomprehensible that it was so difficult to establish the source of the Nile but the river system is so complex geologically that even today its maze of physical features and geologic activity continue to be disputed and reinterpreted. Imagine how difficult the same system would be to explore in the 1800's without the benefit of technology and facility of transportation! Why was it so important anyway to discover the source? Was this legendary goal merely a conceit, was it a necessity, or was there some hidden agenda involved with its discovery? There were many speculations about the Nile and some of the greatest explorers in the history of the world competed for the prize of finding its headwaters – Richard Burton, John Hanning Speke, Stanley Baker, Henry Morton Stanley, James Augustus Grant and Dr. David Livingstone. Together, all of them contributed to the solution of the puzzle.

Speke named the lake for Britain's Queen Victoria; the lake was formerly known to the Arabs as Ukerewe. net to prevent water hyacinth from entering the Nile Lake Victoria is economically important to the surrounding region, which has one of Africa's highest population densities. Fishing and boat building are the most significant economic activities. At the city of Jinja, Uganda, where the Victoria Nile flows out of the lake, the Owen Falls Dam was completed in 1954. The dam turned the lake into a large reservoir that produces hydroelectricity for the surrounding area. The dam also submerged Ripon Falls, the dramatic cataract flowing from the lake, which Speke named in 1862.

by Debra Solomon In spite of the cloud surrounding Speke's claim, his discovery was quickly confirmed after his death. But finding the source of the Nile wasn't the only legacy Speke left. He also left his mark on the names of several East African animals he was first to describe to the West, including Speke's weaver, a small bird, and Speke's gundi, a rodent. One of Speke's most graceful "finds" was Speke's gazelle, four of which recently arrived at the National Zoo, where they now live at the Cheetah Conservation Station. Small and delicate, Speke's gazelles are brown, dog-sized antelope with white patches around the bases of their tails and on the backs of their thighs. They are found in the wild on the dry open plains of Somalia and Ethiopia. Adapted to a desert climate, they feed in the morning and evening, when leaves hold the most moisture, and lie around during the hottest times of the day, conserving precious water.
