COLONIAL DISCOURSES
Series Two: Imperial Adventurers and Explorers
Part 1: Papers of Richard Burton (1821-1890) from the Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office
15 reels of 35mm silver-halide positive microfilm plus guide This second series of Colonial Discourses looks at the role played by imperial adventurers and explorers in defining Masculinity and Empire. Where better place to start than with the papers of Richard Burton (1821-1890)? Burton was at once heroic and controversial and has many claims to our attention: - His first colonial experience was serving in the Indian Army, where he learned local languages and infiltrated local culture, shocking his contemporaries.
- He was an excellent swordsman, writing key works on the bayonet and sword.
- He was one of the first westerners to penetrate Mecca, making use of disguise and his talent for acquiring languages.
- He translated the Arabian Nights and used that work to display his erudition and to show that the work was not a bedtime story for children.
- He was a noted African explorer, preferring to name lakes and mountains by their local names.

HISTORY: THE MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON (1844-1889)
The beginning of the colonial era in East Africa is not clear cut. The region started to fall under British influence since the first alliances of the Muscat sultanate with England, reinforced afterwards by Seyyid Said and prolonged during the Zanzibar sultanate. Apart from that ephemeral first British protectorate from 1824 to 1826, the European powers cultured their commercial relationships with the sultan. Both England and France attempted to dominate the trading routes with Asia. Since the Suez channel project was envisioned and forecasted to be the major highway for this trade, locating the Nile source meant controlling the river, and hence, the channel, reason why Uganda became a paramount objective. The channel would be opened in 1869 under French control, but in 1881 England would acquire most of the shares from an Egyptian citizen. These economic and political interests found their counterpart in others, less tangible. For some, the exploration of Africa also posed personal challenges, being of epic or religious nature. Pioneers over all pioneers, the first Europeans to penetrate the unexplored inner lands of East Africa were two German missionaries serving the

    Relocating Burton:
Public and Private Writings on Africa By Greg Garrett The Journal of African Travel-Writing Number 2 , March 1997 (pp. 70-79). I n recent critical and popular works, the explorer Richard Burton has primarily been described either as an advocate (whether consciously or unconsciously) of British imperialism or, conversely, as a sensitive observer of African culture worthy of contemporary canonization. The actual truth about this remarkably complex Victorian lies somewhere apart from both these extremes. In Burton's popular narratives of his explorations in Africa, among them First Footsteps in East Africa, The Lake Regions of Central Africa , and Wanderings in West Africa , Burton often reflects the attitudes and beliefs of his reading audience. But in comparison with the African travel narratives of many of his contemporaries, particularly his traveling companion and one-time friend John Hanning Speke, Burton also reveals a sympathy for the cultures he encounters and a willingness to record the details of their existence even when they have little or no bearing on the goals of his expeditions. In Speke's public writing, African natives are simply an obstacle in the way of his aims; in Burton's, they seem to represent both a potential challenge and a source of potential knowledge. The latter sets him apart from most of his contemporaries and explains Burton's problematic status as a Victorian explorer and writer. But perhaps most important, Burton's personal ambition and his position as an outsider in British culture ensure that he displays a wide range of attitudes toward Africa, depending on the circumstances of composition and whether his anticipated audience was popular or private.

    John Hanning Speke (1827 - 1864)
Born in Bideford in Devon, Speke was commissioned in the British Indian Army in 1844, where he served in the Punjab and travelled in the Himalayas and Tibet. In April 1855, as a member of Richard Burton's party attempting to explore Somaliland, he was severely wounded in an attack by the Somalis. Invalided home, Speke volunteered for the Crimea and served during the war with a regiment of Turks. In December 1856 he accepted an invitation from Burton to join an expedition to search for the reported great lakes in east central Africa and, particularly, to try and find Lake Nyassa, said to be the origin of the Nile. They left Zanzibar in June 1857 and, after exploring the East African coast for six months to find the best route inland, became the first Europeans to reach Lake Tanganyika in February 1858. During the return trip, Speke left Burton, who was unwell, and struck out northward alone. In July he found his lake, which he named in honour of Queen Victoria. Speke's conclusion about the lake as a Nile source was rejected by Burton and was disputed by many in England. However, the Royal Geographical Society, which had sponsored the expedition, honoured Speke for his exploits and commissioned a second expedition in 1860 to resolve the dispute. Speke and Captain James Grant mapped a portion of Lake Victoria. In July 1862 Speke, unaccompanied by Grant, found the Nile's exit from the lake and named it Ripon Falls. The party then tried to follow the river's course, but an outbreak of tribal warfare required them to change their route.

Sir Richard Francis Burton (March 19, 1821 - Oct. 20, 1890) was an English explorer, linguist, author, and soldier. In 1853, Burton traveled to Cairo, Suez, and the holy cities of Medina and Mecca. Burton made an 1854 journey to the forbidden East African city of Harar (Harer). He was disguised as an Arab pilgrim and spoke excellent Arabic. (Europeans were not allowed in Arabian holy cities; they were executed if they were caught.) In 1855, Burton and three companions (including John Hanning Speke and two other officers of the British East India Company) began an unsuccessful trip in search of the source of the White Nile; one member of the expedition was killed in an attack by Africans, and Speke and Burton were injured. After a stint as a soldier in the Crimean War, Burton returned to Africa (1857-58) with Speke in order to renew their search. After much hardship, they made it to Lake Tanganyika (they were the first Europeans to see it). Speke continued on to the lake that Speke later named Lake Victoria, the biggest lake in Africa (Burton was too ill, suffering from malaria). Speke realized (correctly) that Lake Victoria was the White Nile's source, but Burton did not agree - their long friendship ended over this disagreement.

NILE - A QUEST FOR THE SOURCE In the middle of the 19th century, the river Nile, one of the greatest remaining challenges for explorers, still had its origins behind a barrier of fetid swamps, fatal diseases and ferocious tribesmen. Its mystery was compounded by reports of fabulous lakes and mountains. This challenge fired the imagination of aggressive and individualistic British explorers who went out on dangerous and fever ridden expeditions to find the source of the Nile. They went into this forbidding area only “because it was there”. Successive journeys by Richard Burton , John Speke, James Grant and the Bakers - Samuel and his wife Florence - marked the Nile to its beginnings and pencilled in the central lakes region of Africa one of the last remaining blanks on the worlds maps. Lieutenant John Hanning Speke . These two individuals seemed perfectly suited to the task. Burton was already known for his bold exploits and although he had blighted his prospects in the Indian Service by his bluntness, he was not yet the frighteningly controversial figure he was to become His linguistic abilities and his evident valour and resourcefulness made him an Speke seemed almost as suitable, he was 29 and had considerable experience in collecting botanical and zoological specimens in the Himalayas and was also a surveyor. Although appearing complimentary, the two personalities were in fact utterly incompatible and the violent personal quarrel between Burton and Speke that followed saw armchair geographers taking bitterly opposed sides. Other explorers were involved variously Livingstone, who died whilst trying to clear up the Burton/Speke Nile controversy; Stanley who found his vocation in Africa: James Grant who joined Spekes second expedition to Africa; and Samuel Baker because he went to verify Spekes theories.
