In competitions, a number of skaters (typically 4 to 6) skate simultaneously on a short indoor ice track (111 m). The sport is held at the Olympic Winter Games.
History
The sport of short track speed skating originates in the speed skating events held with mass starts. This form of speed skating was mainly practised in the United States and Canada, as opposed to the international form, where skaters skated in pairs. At the 1932 Olympic Winter Games, speed skating events were conducted in mass start form. Competitions in North America were also held indoors, for example in Madison Square Garden, New York, and therefore on shorter tracks than was usual for outdoor skating.

Speed Skating For as long as there have been skates, there have been people who liked to skate fast. Speed skating
was actually the first of the three skating sports to develop into a competitive sport. Simply put, it is
racing on ice. There are three basic types of competitions in speed skating; most people are familiar
with the Olympic style (double lane), mass start (outdoor and indoor) and I.S.U. short track. Short track competition takes place on a 111.12 meter oval inside an arena. It is very exciting to
watch between four and six skilled skaters make their passes and show adept strategy in a confined
area. After short track speed skating was a demonstration sport at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and
became a full Olympic sport in 1992, the sport's popularity began to grow. This trend did not go
unnoticed by the Arctic Winter Games. Short track replaced long track in 1988 and has been a
highlight of every Arctic Winter Games since that time. Nunavut skaters brought home medals at the 2000 Arctic Winter Games and the sport is developing
rapidly in our community. Let's see what they can achieve this year!

Of course it's exciting to have the Games held in your own backyard, but that's not all. Novell is also an official sponsor of the U.S. Speed Skating Team, based out of Park City, Utah, and has been funding their efforts to prepare and train for the Winter Games. Novell's sponsorship helps provide training, travel, outfits, and other expenses, enabling the athletes to concentrate on shaving milleseconds off their times. It seems to be working: members of the U.S. team stood on the podium 48 times this year, which is a record for U.S. Speed Skating. Business is like speedskating. The fastest on their feet win. There are a lot of sports in the Winter Games, but Novell chose speed skating for a very specific reason. This intense, white-knuckle sport requires speed, control, agility and endurance. To win, skaters must be fast on their feet, make split-second decisions, and execute flawlessly throughout the entire race. A perfect metaphor for the relentless business environment in which Novell and its customers must compete every day. Here's a closer look at the sport the way it's played in 2002.
