    Full History
    30-Second History
    • Speed skating, like figure skating, grew out of the development of the ice skate. When the iron blade replaced the wood or bone runner, skating became a winter pastime in northern European countries. Long track speed skating was introduced at the first-ever Olympic Winter Games in 1924, but short track speed skating was not added until 1992. The klap skate, which featured a front hinge and allowed the athlete to lift his/her heel off the back of the blade, gave athletes much shorter times.
    Timeline
~300 AD The first ice skates were created in northern Europe. They were used for transportation and made from wood, bone or antlers. Wood runners gave way to iron blades for skates. The first steel blades were created for skates, which allowed for an edge that did not need to resharpened as much as the iron blade. The first official speed skating World Championships were held in The Netherlands. The International Skating United was founded to govern the growing sport of skating, including speed skating and figure skating, in the world. Short track speed skating gained interest in North America with the first organized competitions.

MSSA will provide superior quality support to its athletes, coaches and officials while providing opportunities for fun, fitness, personal excellence and high peformance within a safe and secure atmosphere. Short Track Speed Skating Short Track Speed Skating is the newest, hottest and one of the most innovative and exciting sports since it was introduced at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. The skating takes place on a 111 metre oval track where corners are tight and speeds are fast. Skaters race in both sprints and long distances in groups of four or five. Team relays are also a fascinating component in short track speed skating. Long Track Speed Skating Long Track Speed Skating takes place on a 400 metre oval track and includes both Mass Start and Olympic Style racing. Skaters participate in a Mass Start format where there are several skaters racing at the same time. The Olympic Style, for experienced skaters, has only two competitors racing on the track. Olympic Style speed skating has been an Olympic Sport since 1924. In Manitoba, the Susan Auch Oval and the Brandon Oval house our Long Track programs. Speed Skating Statistics The Manitoba Speed Skating Association is proud of our skating accomplishments. No less than 18 Speed Skaters from the province have represented Canada at the Winter Olympic Games. Most recently, Susan Auch won the silver medal at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano. Susan also won a silver medal at the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer while fellow Manitobans, Michael and Sean Ireland successfully participated in these Games.
