Kids start zipping around the ice early for this extreme sport
By Emily Dupuis
Illinois is a great place to be a speed skater. Not only do you skate with the best, but there are great facilities as well. It's an extreme sport but in this area you can learn speed skating from Olympians. It's not a sport you normally think of for your 3- or 4 year-old. But serious speed skaters pick up skates as young as 3, with intensive training beginning in their teen years. "It's like anything else in life," says Peter Block, Park Ridge Speed Skating Club president. "If you learn something at a tender young age, it practically becomes part of your DNA." Illinois, because of its frosty climate, has long been a center for speed skating, an ideal place to take the first step into what many consider an extreme sport. Park Ridge, Evanston, Glen Ellyn, Franklin Park, Northbrook, Rockford and the Quad Cities all have speed skating clubs, many with free sessions for first-timers. "[Speed skating] teaches perseverance. You just can't go out there and do it.

Origins

For Northern Europeans 1000 years ago, ice skating was a method of transportation over the frozen canals and waterways. But as skates transformed from animal bones tied to shoes to iron-bladed boots, skating evolved into a competitive sport. In 1763, the world's first organized speed skating race was held in England.
Canada's first recorded race took place on the St.Lawrence River in 1854 when three army officers raced from Montreal to Quebec City. By 1887, the Amateur Skating Association of Canada was formed and the first official championship was held. Canada was the first non-European country to join the International Skating Union in 1894. The Canadian Amateur Speed Skating Association changed its name to Speed Skating Canada in 2000.
The Sport
In long track, skaters race in pairs counterclockwise on two lanes of a 400m oval track, and change lanes every lap to even out the distance. The skater moving from the outer lane to the inner lane has the right of way when both skaters exit the corner simultaneously. They are not allowed to skate inside their individual lane markers and while their skate may cross the lane line when enterinng a corner, the gliding skate (the one bearing the skater's weight) must remain outside.
The selection of pairs is done by a draw the night before the race, and a random draw decides the starting lanes and starting order. The skaters race against the clock and the one with the fastest time wins.

Olympic Oval is putting 'speed' in speed skating
By Mark Zeigler
UNION-TRIBUNE Staff Writer February 14, 2002 Speed skating is about long hours gliding around on a frozen oval, endlessly stroking with your body hunched forward, around and around and around. You need huge thighs and massive lungs and an ungodly threshold for pain. You also need a geek sitting behind a computer screen monitoring results from a wind tunnel. Medals will be contested at 10 distances in these Olympics, five each for men and women. Several world records are expected to fall. So far, they're 2-for-3. On Saturday, the Netherlands' Jochem Uytdehaage shattered the men's 5,000-meter record; Gianne Romme's winning time from the '98 Olympics would have put him fifth. On Sunday, Claudia Pechstein broke her own world record in the women's 3,000. A victory for the Dutch and Germans. A victory, also, for technology. Four years ago it was the clap skates and mysterious aerodynamic strips on the outside of the Dutch skaters' shins. Clap skates (so called for the clacking sound they make) revolutionized the sport because they are hinged at the toe, allowing the blade to remain on the ice a split-second longer during each stroke. In many statistical charts now, there are pre-clap and post-clap records. The Dutch strips? The idea is that they help air flow, and the jury is still out. They did, however, have a psychological effect. The Dutch either were really on to something, or they were messing with everyone's minds.

Speed Skating
Although archeologists in Scandinavia have relics that demonstrate primitive people glided over the ice using skates fashioned from animal bone and straps of leather, it was in the Netherlands that skating became a mode of transportation and national passion. Using the frozen canals for the track, speed skating became a winter past time and quickly gained in popularity across Europe. The first known skating competition is thought to have been a 15-meter race and took place in England on February 4, 1763.

Competition
Speed skating has been part of the Olympics since the first Winter Games in 1924. At first, only men raced, but in 1960, four women's speed skating events were held at the Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley. The women's 5000 meter event was added to the Olympic program in Calgary in 1988, completing the 10 events that will be currently raced in Salt Lake City: 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m. Each race (for both men and women) has a slightly different rule for winning. The 2002 Speed Skating events will be held in the 6,000 seat Utah Olympic Oval which is the world's highest-altitude indoor skating oval

Short Track
It's been called the demolition derby of the Olympics. In short-track speed skating, competitors squeeze into a tight oval track measuring just 364 ft (111 m) around. At full speed, they jockey for position and often bump one another. Spills are frequent and sometimes nasty.
Though short-track speed skating dates back to the late 1800s, the sport didn't become an officially recognized Olympic event until the 1992 Albertville Games
The competition consisted of four events in 1992, but has been expanded to eight in 2002:
  • 500-meters (men's and women's) 1,000-meters (men's and women's) 1,500-meters (men's and women's) 3,000-meter relay women's 5,000-meter relay men's
In the 500- and 1,000-meter events, four skaters are on the track for each heat, while in the 1,500-meter event there are six skaters on the ice. In the thrilling relay events, there are no batons used (as there are in running relays). Instead the athletes are simply given a push by their teammates when it's time to skate.
The 1998 short-track events in Nagano were dominated by the Canadians and South Koreans, with Japan and China causing a stir as well. The 2002 Games should be no different. Defending men's 1,000-meter champ Dong-Sung Kim of South Korea has looked strong in preliminary events.
