30-Second Guide to Speed Skating The oldest of the ice skate sports, today Olympic speed skating consists of two popular disciplines: long track speed skating and short track speed skating. Long track speed skaters race against the clock for the fastest time around a long, 400-meter oval ice course. Short track speed skaters race against other athletes around a shorter, more narrow ice course. Did You Know?
  • Speed skating is the fastest, non-mechanically human-powered sport in the world. Olympic speed skaters can reach speeds in excess of 40 mph during the course of their race.
  • A short course speed skating competition is held on a rink that is the same size as an international ice hockey game.
  • American Bonnie Blair is the most successful U.S. female speed skater, but she is also the most successful U.S. female Olympian in individual competition. Blair, who retired from competition in 1995, won five individual Olympic gold medals (six total Olympic medals) the most of any female U.S. Olympian ever.

Skating, besides being an important form of winter recreation and the essential skill in the game of ice hockey (see hockey, ice ice dancing . All three are now features of the Winter Olympic games.
    Speed Skating
In speed-skating events, racers may reach speeds as high as 30 mi (48 km) per hr. The Olympic races are around oval tracks at distances of 500, 1,000, 1,500, 5,000, and 10,000 meters for men and 500, 1,000, 1,500, 3,000, and 5,000 meters for women. Short-track skating features skaters in massed starts circling a small indoor oval. In the Olympics men compete in 500-, 1,000-, and 1,500-meter events, with a 5,000-meters relay; the women's races are at similar distances except for the relay (3,000 meters).
    Figure Skating
Jackson Haines, an American, revolutionized figure skating in the 1860s, skating to music, bringing balletic movements to ice, and creating new ones. One of the most beautiful and graceful events in all sport, international figure skating requires skaters to perform a short program that includes mandatory jumps and skills, and then a longer program of free selection, both set to music. Judging is subjective and often controversial. Skaters also compete in pairs, seeking through the intricate synchronization of moves and the performance of lifts and jumps to impress the scoring judges.

While the 2002 Winter Olympics were being held in Salt Lake City, Utah, our second graders had many activities in Phy Ed class which were patterned after Olympic events. Students participated in curling, bob sledding, giant slalom skiing, ice hockey, cross country skiing, and mogul skiing. Because they enjoyed their activities, students decided that Winter Olympic sports would be a good topic for their graph. Children and adults in the Milwaukee area were very involved in watching and talking about the Olympics because many of the skaters trained here at the Petit Ice Center. Chris Witty, who won the gold medal for speed skating, and several other famous skaters including Bonnie Blair and Dan Jansen, are from our area. To make their graph, students talked about popular Winter Olympic sports and why people liked them the most. Students nominated and voted for their top five favorite Winter Olympic sports then voted again for their individual favorites out of the five choices. The graph was made using AppleWorks with the matching graphics inserted to create the border. We worked together to create three questions which could be answered by using information on the graph. Have fun answering our questions!

Speed skating Skating was first developed in Northern Europe around 300 AD, as a means of transportation. But give humans a means of getting from point A to point B and they'll eventually try to outdo each other.
By the 1400s, Dutch skaters were racing each other up and down Holland's vast network of canals. By the early 1900s, two separate disciplines had emerged in what had come to be known as speed skating: short-track and long-track.
Races and the Sammelagt Point System There are two main categories of competition in long-track speed skating: the sprint and the all-round. Sprint distances are 500m and 1,000m for both men and women, while in the all-around, men and women race different distances. The men's races are over 1,500m, 5,000m and 10,000m, while women race over 1,000m, 1,500m and 3,000m. Catriona Le May Doan was a sprinter. So is Jeremy Wotherspoon. On the other hand Clara Hughes and Cindy Klassen specialize in all-round racing.
Long-track Olympic races are skated in pairs on a 400m oval, with skaters moving in a counter-clockwise direction. Pairs are chosen in a draw held by the referee. A separate draw is conducted for each race. Skaters are grouped by performance, and the fastest skaters usually race first. A draw is also held to determine the starting lanes inner or outer and the starting order for each group. The skater who starts in the inner lane wears a white armband, and the outside skater wears a red armband.

Spotlight On Schools Featured Columnists Letters ... April 2001 New York City March 2002 Chris Witty: Gold Olympic Speed Skater “Whatever, man.” Chris Witty’s favorite saying, reflecting her legendarily laid-back attitude, served her well in winning the gold medal in the 1,000 meter speed-skating event at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics last month. Yes, in order to win her third Olympic medal—she has also won a silver and a bronze in the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan—Witty had to overcome a lot. Mainly mononucleosis, a disease she did not even find out she had until a month before her big skate. “All I knew was I was tired all the time,” she said. “And so were my times in practice. I was actually relieved to find out something was really wrong with me. I was going to cry, but then I said to myself ‘that’s stupid. You just have to push your way through this like you’ve done with everything else.’” Witty has already proven she can push herself to miracles. Besides being the most decorated woman speed-skater in the U.S., the 31 year old from West Allis, Wisconsin has also competed in the Sydney Summer Olympics in cycling – finishing fifth in the 500-meter time trial – an almost unbelievable exacta.

October 9, 2003 BY KRISTA LATHAM
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER Maybe you've never seen an inline speed skating event. But you can picture it. Imagine a typical roller rink with small orange cones set in an oval around the middle to create a track along the outer ridge. Now imagine those speed ice skaters you watched in the Olympics, complete with full-body spandex, plastic helmets and swanky skates but with wheels, not blades. The skaters are bent at the waist, sailing along with that side-to-side leg sweep and arm swing. That's inline speed skating. And at Great Skate Roller Rink in Roseville, some of the best inline speed skaters meet twice a week to circle the rink in a blur. Kids as young as 5 and men and women as old as 60, all wearing spandex, skate together in one line, a train of skaters speeding along under the flickering red and blue disco lights. These are the Great Skate Wolverines, one of the most decorated inline teams in the country.

Sixteen World Class and eight Junior World Class inline speed skating athletes will compete in track and road races against the best of the international circuit. The 2004 USARS Outdoor National Inline Speed Skating Championships, held May 26 through June 1 in Colorado Springs, Colo., displayed the fastest inline speed skaters in the nation as they rolled for the overall gold and enough points to qualify for World Team USA. Olympian Ice Speedskater KC Boutiette (Park City, UT) skated the Outdoor National competition as a kick-off to his summer training and made the cut on Senior World Team USA. Boutiette is entertaining the thought of competing, but no final decision has yet been made. First year World Class Men’s Joey Mantia (Ocala, Fla.), William Bowen (Harrisonburg, Va.) and Christopher Creveling (Kinthersville,Penn.) will be representing the United States in competition. Mantia, Bowen and Creveling are veterans to the international circuit, serving on the Junior World Team in 2003.
