This form of the sport is also known as "pack style," because a pack of four skaters compete on a 111.12-meter track, with the winner being the first to cross the finish line. The four corners of the course are marked by rubber blocks. Skaters are allowed to enter the infield, but they have to pass outside the markers on the turns. A series of elimination heats are held, leading to the semi-finals and finals. Semi-final losers compete in their own final to determine fifth through eighth places.

Traditional speed skating is conducted on a 400-meter track against the clock. Although there are two racers on the course simultaneously, they're not really competing against one another. The finishing time is the deciding factor. Since 1998, the 500-meter has been decided by the aggregate time in two trials. In all other races, there's a single time trial. Three women's races were held as demonstration events in 1932, but women's speed skating didn't become a medal sport until 1960. Top of page

WINTER OLYMPICS SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1992 SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING races began to occur in Europe shortly after speed skating became an established international sport. The International Skating Union was founded in 1892, three years after the first long-track World Championships. Prior to the arrival of short track at the Olympics, it was common for skaters to compete in short and long-track events. Short track ovals were covered and offered a place for skaters to train all year. Many long-track racers would practice sprinting and turning techniques around the small oval. Some even competed in short track competitions. With the development of new indoor long-track facilities, the cross-sport training is not as popular anymore. Also, now that short track has become established as an Olympic sport, racers have been forced to specialize to succeed. Short track speed skating made its first Olympic appearance at the 1988 Calgary Games as a demonstration sport and featured 10 events. The sport's popularity was immediately apparent. The IOC admitted short track to the Olympic program in 1992 but limited it to one individual and one relay event for men and women in Albertville (men's 1000 meters, women's 500, and the men's and women's relays).

    WINTER OLYMPICS SPEED SKATING
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1924 It is believed that skates were developed about 3000 years ago in Scandinavia. In the Netherlands, skating served as a way to travel over the canals in winter and the Dutch are still among the world's most avid skaters. Although the Netherlands is the birthplace of speed skating, the first known skating competition is thought to have been held in 1676. Competitions sprung up across the northern part of Europe shortly after, but the first official speed skating events were not held until 1863 in Oslo, Norway. In 1889, the Netherlands hosted the first World Championships, bringing together the Dutch, Russians, Americans and English. SPEED SKATING was staged at the 1924 Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix Mont Blanc and has been on the Olympic Winter program since. Women first competed in the sport at the Olympic Games in 1932 when it was a demonstration event. Women's speed skating as a full medal discipline began in 1960. The women's 5000 meters was added to the Olympic program in Calgary in 1988, completing the 10 events that will be competed in Salt Lake City. Olympic speed skating has almost always been staged using the European system of skating time trials in two-man pairs. In 1932 in Lake Placid, the Americans convinced the ISU to hold the events using the North American style of pack racing. This resulted in the boycott of many Europeans, and the Americans won all four gold medals. This system, however, would later develop into short-track speed skating, which was added to the Olympic programme in 1992.
