http://www.sportshumanitarian.com/Inductees/BLAIR.HTM
BONNIE BLAIR THE LONELY GAME. That's what Norwegians call the sport of speed skating. It's you, a 400m frozen oval, thousands of left turns, all in the quest to go faster, for a new personal best. For BONNIE KATHLEEN BLAIR, franchise player of America's last three Winter Olympic teams, it's been not only a lonely game, but a search for appreciation and respect, for her and for speed skating. The solitary saving grace from the wreckage of 1994, the single worst year in the history of sport. A one-woman dynasty, as dominant in her sport (and deserving to be mentioned in the same sentence) as a few guys named Jordan, Gretzsky, Montana and Ail are (and were) in theirs. She is, by any reasonable measurement, one of the greatest U.S. athletes ever. How successful was Bonnie when the Olympic flame was lit? From February 22, 1988, in Calgary, via the French Alps in 1992 (Albertville), until February 23, 1994, in Lillehammer, Norway, try five gold and one bronze. She is the proud owner of nearly twenty percent of the entire U.S. Winter games medal haul (and forty-two percent of its gold) since 1989. Bonnie didn't just excel in Olympic years; far from it. Bonnie was an eleven-time World Cup points champion, in three different disciplines from 1986 until last year. She was the first woman to go under thirty-nine seconds in the 500m and in the last race of her career, on March 18, 1995 (her birthday), set a personal best and broke at long last her seven year, twenty-day old American record in the 1000m. A real Ted Williams-like way to go out.

The main elements are: Form and technique, with the use of strength and power. Inline speed skating is a professional sport in many countries, such as ,USA, Holland,France, Italy, China, Korea, Taiwan, India, Australia, Indonesia and Columbia.
Great for kids too! Teaches discipline, a sense of fair play, team work, and gives them a good fitness foundation. Speed Skating History Ice Speed skating was the first of the three forms of skating to develop into a sport. (The three forms of skating are speed skating, figure skating and hockey.) As early as 1500, the Dutch were especially famous for putting blades to ice in a race. In the 18th century, speed skating's popularity spread across Europe, and organized races began for English aristocrats. By the late 1800s, steel skates had revolutionized the sport, and modern competitions were born. The Dutch again led the pack by creating the double track, as well as the competition format still essentially in use today for all long track races.

The first gold medal in short track at these Games seemed destined to go to Yang (A), who appeared poised to finally become the first gold-medalist in Chinese history at the Winter Olympics. medals at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games with seven, one more than Canada.
There were 24 medals awarded in the four nights of competition, with China, Korea and Canada each winning two gold medals. Australia and the United States of America each captured one gold. It was the highest number of medals ever awarded in short track at an Olympic Winter Games, because of the additions of 1500 m individual races for both men and women.
Canada won five men's medals, with the U.S. men second with three medals, including two by Apolo Anton Ohno. China (5) and Korea (4) combined to win nine of the 12 awarded medals in the women's competition.
Yang (A) and Marc Gagnon (CAN) each left the 2002 Olympic Winter Games with three medals overall.

Today, Bonnie Blair is a favorite on the lecture circuit with her highly motivating speech on "Achieving Your Personal Best". Success under pressure is the measure of a true champion. There are numerous winners in the world of sports but the celebrated athletes are the few who meet the challenge of pressure time after time. Bonnie Blair is undoubtedly celebrated as the speedskater who produces her best performances when it counts the most. Bonnie began her race in the 500 meter event of the 1988 Calgary Olympics immediately after her rival Christa Rothenburger of East Germany set a world record. Not to be outdone, Bonnie proceeded to skate the 500 meters faster than any woman had before or has since, capturing the gold medal in a world record time of 39.1. This record stood for 5 years until March 1994, when at the age of 30, Blair met her ultimate goal of shattering the 39 second mark with a time of 38.99.

Games Marred by Controversy over Judging Decisions
The Salt Lake Olympics were held under unprecedentedly heavy guard in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. The number of participating countries totaled 78, the largest in Olympic history, and the United States made every effort to lead the Olympic Games to a success despite the threat of terrorism. But the Games were rife with troubles.
When the Canadians made complained over a major judging controversy in pairs figure skating that one of the judges was under a certain pressure, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in an extraordinary move gave a gold medal to the Canadian pair on top of the Russian pair. Complaints came one after another also over decisions in short-track speed skating and ice hockey. The Japanese lodged a protest with the International Skating Union (ISU) over Satoru Terao's controversial disqualification in a short-track event, while Russia and South Korea at one point threatened to boycott the Games on the grounds that judging decisions were allegedly biased in favor of the host country.
In cross-country skiing, two skiers - one man and one woman - were stripped of gold medals after failing in a doping test.

Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze of Russia (left) and Jamie Sale and David Pelletier of Canada pose Sunday with their gold medals at a special awards ceremony for the figure skating pairs competition. Olympic alchemy: Skaters' silver turns into gold Canadian duo awarded gold in special ceremony JOHN JEANSONNE, NEWSDAY Originally published Monday, February 18, 2002 SALT LAKE CITY One thing we have learned, in the Olympic pairs judging episode, is that there are different ways of looking at figure skating events. On Sunday night, when Canadians Jamie Sale and David Pelletier were presented with gold medals, standing with the other gold medalists from their competition, Russia's Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze, it could have been seen as prolonging a seven-day-old situation. Or, as sportsmanlike closure. It could have been considered a melodramatic way to fill the arena on a night originally meant for the odd theater of ice dancing. Or, a serious attempt to right a wrong.
