History of Our Olympic Games Welcome to our web site!
Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

History
Traditional speed skating is conducted on a 400-meter track against the clock. Although there are two racers on the course simultaneously, they're not really competing against one another. The finishing time is the deciding factor. Since 1998, the 500-meter has been decided by the aggregate time in two trials. In all other races, there's a single time trial. Three women's races were held as demonstration events in 1932, but women's speed skating didn't become a medal sport until 1960. Top of page

Short track speed skating was a demonstration sport at the 1988 Winter Olympics and became a medal sport in 1992. This form of the sport is also known as "pack style," because a pack of four skaters compete on a 111.12-meter track, with the winner being the first to cross the finish line. The four corners of the course are marked by rubber blocks. Skaters are allowed to enter the infield, but they have to pass outside the markers on the turns. A series of elimination heats are held, leading to the semi-finals and finals. Semi-final losers compete in their own final to determine fifth through eighth places. Top of page

Although archeologists in Scandinavia have relics that demonstrate primitive people glided over the ice using skates fashioned from animal bone and straps of leather, it was in the Netherlands that skating became a mode of transportation and national passion. Using the frozen canals for the track, speed skating became a winter past time and quickly gained in popularity across Europe. The first known skating competition is thought to have been a 15-meter race and took place in England on February 4, 1763.

Speed skating has been part of the Olympics since the first Winter Games in 1924. At first, only men raced, but in 1960, four women's speed skating events were held at the Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley. The women's 5000 meter event was added to the Olympic program in Calgary in 1988, completing the 10 events that will be currently raced in Salt Lake City: 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m. Each race (for both men and women) has a slightly different rule for winning. The 2002 Speed Skating events will be held in the 6,000 seat Utah Olympic Oval which is the world's highest-altitude indoor skating oval

A Vintage Pair of Ice Skates 1924 marked the year of the first official Winter Games, and for the first time events such as figure skating, speed skating, Nordic skiing, bobsleigh, and ice hockey were held at a separate celebration than the Summer Games. Taking place in Chamonix, France, 294 competitors were involved in the first official Winter Olympics. The number of athletes participating in Salt Lake City is projected to be over 2,300. Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie made her debut at the 1924 Games, at age 12, and in 1928, 32, and 36 took home the gold medals. In 1937 Henie took advantage of her world popularity and appeared in her first movie. Her Hollywood career would last over 10 years.

Twenty-eight countries participated enthusiastically, and it was clear that the games had survived both the world's conflicts, and the 12-year span between the last Olympics. The IOC awarded the 1976 Olympics to Denver, Colorado, but after two years of preparation and financial squabbling, the people of Colorado refused to fund the major event through public taxes. Innsbruck offered to host the Winter Olympics only twelve years since it last played the role, and the underplayed event went off peacefully and without excessive spending.

    Long Track History
Olympic speed skating, or long track as it is known today, made its debut at the first Winter Olympics in 1924 in Chamonix, France and it has been a highlight of the Games ever since. Early Olympic competition was dominated by the Finns and Norwegians; however, the Americans invariably provided stiff competition. Canada's first Olympic speed skating medals were won in 1932 in Lake Placid. The medal count was one silver and four bronze for the men while the women, competing in demonstration events, captured one gold and two silver medals. A star of those Games was the legendary Lela Brooks, who in 1925 set six world records and in 1926 became the first all-around world champion. By the late 1930s, popular interest in speed skating began to decline; and as hockey arenas were built, professional hockey hastened the diminishing spectator appeal of the sport. The advent of World War II also took a toll on the popularity of Canadian speed skating. When Olympic competition resumed in 1948, the Norwegians remained the skaters to beat. However, at the 1952 Oslo Games Canada's Gordon Audley brought home the 500 m bronze medal. By 1956 at Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, speed skaters from the Soviet Union (absent from Olympic competition for 48 years) ended the Norwegian stranglehold on Olympic speed skating. The Canadians were shut out and would have to wait until 1976 to mount the victor's podium once again.
