Sheila Allee Communications produces most types of speeches for almost any venue - corporate, sales, political, awards ceremonies, commencements.
The speechwriting process involves several steps:
  • Audience Research - Complete audience demographics, context, and audience expectations. Also researched are the layout of the room in which the speech will be given and availability of microphones and visual enhancement equipment.
Information Gathering - The speaker is interviewed at least once to determine his/her goals for the speech and what key points need to be conveyed. The speaker is also asked to provide favorite personal stories to enrich the speech's content. For maximum effect, ongoing speaker involvement in the speechwriting process is important.
Information is gathered for the speech through research on the Internet, in books, magazines, newspapers, databanks, and all sources provided by the speaker. Thematic research is conducted as well to add cohesiveness and images to the remarks.

Andrew Jackson Speaks: Indian Removal More History Critical Thinkers hooks Kerouac ...
Text of The Indian Removal Act, 1830
Passed into law during Jackson's second year as President, this Act set the tone for his administration's handling of all Indian affairs. In fact, Removal outlasted his tenure: the last of the Cherokee were infamously forced on the Trail of Tears death march in 1838, two years after Jackson's secondand finalterm ended. Though all Eastern tribes were eventually relocated West of the Mississippi, the government failed utterly in its pledge to enact the policy on a strictly voluntary basis (a policy notably not written into the act.) Nearly all relocation was carried out under duress, whether by military escort, or when no other option remained after tribal decimation by broken treaties, fraudulent land deals and the wars these often caused. Here is the Act's preamble:

CHAP. CXLVIII.An Act to provide for an exchange of lands with the Indians residing in any of the states or territories, and for their removal west of the river Mississippi.

Paul von Hindenburg was born in Posen in 1847. After being educated at the cadet schools at Wahlstatt and Berlin he fought at the Battle of Koniggratz (1866) and in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). Promoted to the rank of general in 1903, Hindenburg retired from the army in 1911.
On the outbreak of the First World War Hindenburg was recalled to the German Army and after being sent to the Eastern Front won decisive victories over the Russians at Tannenberg (1914) and the Masaurian Lakes (1915). Seen as the saviour of East Prussia, he was promoted to field marshal and on the 29th August 1916 became Chief of Staff of the German Army.

Birth and Education
John Adams
Independence National Historical Park John Adams was born at Quincy, then part of the ancient town of Braintree, on the 19th day of October, old style, 1735. He was a descendant of the Puritans, his ancestors having early emigrated from England, and settled in Massachusetts. Discovering early a strong love of reading and of knowledge, proper care was taken by his father to provide for his education. His youthful studies were prosecuted in Braintree, under Mr. Marsh, a gentleman whose fortune it was to instruct several children, who in manhood were destined to act a conspicuous part in the scenes of the revolution.
He became a member of Harvard College, 1751, and was graduated in course in 1755: with what degree of reputation he left the university is not now precisely known; we only know that he was distinguished in a class of which the Dr. Hemmenway was a member, who bore honorable testimony to the openness and decision of his character, and to the strength and activity of his mind.
Having chosen the law for his profession, he commenced and prosecuted its studies under the direction of Samuel Putnam, a barrister of eminence at Worcester. By him he was introduced to the celebrated Jeremy Gridley, then attorney general of the province of Massachusetts Bay. At the first interview they became friends; Gridley at once proposed Mr. Adams for admission to the bar of Suffolk, and took him into special favor. Soon after his admission, Mr. Gridley led his young friend into a private chamber with an air of secrecy, and, pointing to a book case, said, "Sir, there is the secret of my eminence, and of which you may avail yourself as you please." It was a pretty good collection of treatises of the civil law. In this place Mr. Adams spent his days and nights, until he had made himself master of the principles of the code.

John Wilkes Booth was born in Bel Air, Maryland, on 10th May, 1838. He was the ninth of ten children born to the famous actor, Junius Brutus Booth
Booth made his acting debut at the age of seventeen in Baltimore. He toured throughout America and soon became one of America's leading actors and was especially acclaimed for the work he did with the Shakespearean company that was based in Richmond
Unlike the rest of his family, Booth was an ardent supporter of slavery . In 1859 he joined the Virginia militia company that assisted in the capture of John Brown at Harper's Ferry
Although Booth had a deep hatred for President Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party , he did not join the Confederate Army on the outbreak of the American Civil War . Instead he worked as a secret agent and also helped to smuggle medical supplies from the North to the Confederate forces in the South. As a touring actor Booth had the perfect cover for this work.

Could You Be a Speech Writer? Objectives:
Familiarity with historic and modern public figures and speakers, and with basic rhetoric technique. Activity:
Watch the segments of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" and Franklin Roosevelt's Declaration of War in Great American Speeches: 80 Years of Political Oratory , and discuss the impact that each of the two speakers had on the United States, politically, socially and otherwise. What has changed in the country and in the world from the times that both of these public speakers made their addresses? What has stayed the same? How does each man's manner of addressing his audience differ? What did each speaker hope to accomplish through his words? Did he succeed? Why is each style effective? Discuss public speaking: students should be already familiar with some basic rhetorical devices; refer them to "Worsdmith" section for examples and definitions of less common techniques of speech making. Explain elements of public address such as pacing, pitch, emotional appeal, reading the audience; the average speaker talks at between 75 and 125 words per minute. Take turns reading aloud and counting off the pace of each student orator. Assignment:
Write a short essay stating five reasons why the student feels that the speakers' addresses were successful or not.

Speeches that get you noticed...
I know your story! The boss has just approached you nonchalantly and asked you to "say a few words on my behalf." It turns out he wants you to pitch a major proposal before contractors, a zoning board, a convention, or a trade group. And you haven't addressed an audience since that ridiculous public speaking class in high school.
As a businesswoman and a freelance writer, I know this story all too well. Giving a presentation or pitching an idea is something managers and executives always try to shuffle off on someone else. What a pity! There is no better way to score points or earn promotions than demonstrating your competence and confidence behind a podium. Performing well in front of an audience is what sets business leaders apart from the 9 to 5 crowd.

Life on the Inside Life on the Inside Print Mail David Frum Reflects on Being a Bush Speech Writer By L. Ian MacDonald Posted: Friday, February 21, 2003 BOOK REVIEWS Maclean's (Toronto Edition) Publication Date: January 27, 2003 The Right Man: The Surprise Presidency of George W. Bush
By David Frum
The transition from punditry to speech writing is a matter of going from writing that the speech was lousy to writing the lousy speech. Canadian author and columnist David Frum crossed over in January 2001 when he joined the new administration of George W. Bush, doubtful that the president had the right stuff, but unable to resist the opportunity of seeing the White House from the inside. "I had been looking in from the outside for a very long time," Frum writes in The Right Man: The Surprise Presidency of George W. Bush. "If only for a little, I would like to look out from inside." He stayed only a year, one in which the Bush presidency was transformed by the events of September 11, 2001a day at the office unlike any other. Frum has since successfully escaped the White House, and lived to write about the experience among the buttoned-down Bushiesa highly regimented, highly disciplined, God-fearing, Bible-quoting outfit that doesn't drinkat least, not to excessdoesn't swear and hasn't done drugs since college. The Bushies are reportedly annoyed at Frum for breaking the rule that what goes on inside stays inside. They shouldn't be. There's nothing here that Bob Woodward hasn't written in his 2002 book

Is Email More Like Speech or More Like Writing?
Because my profession is writing about electronic mail, I frequently see people ask whether email is more like writing or more like speech. The answer, I think, is "no." What people identify as "like speech" is informality; "like writing" is formality. However, this is not because of the medium. How precise a message has to be depends upon three things:
    • the amount of context that you and your correspondent share
    • how important the message is
    • how easy it is for your correspondent to ask clarifying questions
    Context
The less shared context you have with your correspondent, the more careful and precise you have to be about describing the situation. I could write a note to my husband that would be very informal: Hon gone to rocks, xoxoxo" This message is perfectly understandable to my husband because he and I share an enormous amount of context. He knows that "Hon" means him, that "rocks" means "Jeff and Sue's rock carving studio", and that "xoxox" means "I love you." However, if I were speaking to someone who did not speak American English very well, I would need to be very careful to not use slang or cultural references (like "xoxoxo").
