Depending on the location and extent of injury, many children with stroke will have problems with speaking language (expressive) or understanding language (receptive) . Speech therapists can aid in diagnosing and treating some of the problems related to speech. Most speech therapists have completed a masters degree and are also referred to as speech language pathologists (SLP). Some have taken extra training to work with the pediatric population. Some therapists specialize in different aspects of language such as swallowing and eating problems (oral-motor) CHASA sites related to speech: Speech and communication Communication Devices Glossary of Communication Disorders Language Development of Children with Stroke or Hemiplegia Other links to speech therapy: American Speech Language and Hearing Association : professional organization with a wealth of information on various speech disorders. Q. My first grader brought home a note from school requesting that he participate in the speech therapy program, as he has a slight problem with making L and R sounds. I know he sometimes mispronounces certain words beginning with these sounds, but he can also pronounce many words beginning with these sounds accurately. I thought that with maturity, this would improve. Does this sound like a problem that requires enrollment in a speech therapy program? At what age do children master speech sounds? I should also note that he is the oldest child in our family and he was a late talker. He has been read to consistently since he was three months old. A. Children should have speech that is quite clear by the time they are in first grade. There are certainly some children who will have problems with articulating certain letters and certain sounds, and some of this may be hereditary. While it is true that the problem may get better with maturity, I do not see any harm in initiating speech therapy in order to improve the speech more quickly. For some children the speech does not improve much without specific therapy. You do want to be careful that your child is not "labeled" and that he is not made to feel bad because of his speech impediment. You want to do whatever you can to bolster his self esteem and let him see that this is just a minor problem that he is getting a little help with. Your child may even feel better once his speech starts to improve because he will be able to communicate more effectively with other children and adults, and not have to repeat or rephrase questions so that people can understand him.

HOW TO READ A BOOK TO YOUR CHILD
Show delight and enthusiasm as you read. Never turn reading into a chore.
Try to read to your child each day.
find a time when you and the child are relaxed and interested in reading, such as at bedtime or after a nap.
Let your child choose the books and pages to read.
Point to the Pictures as you talk about them.
Let the child help hold the book and turn the pages.
Tell a familiar story, but leave out words or parts of sentences for your child to fill in.
Let your child describe the pictures and tell the story to you.
Write down your child's homemade story and read it to him.
Ask the child to make up a story, or to finish one you have started. If your child periodically does not show an interest in reading, continue to read to the child as he plays quietly. Eventually the child will again be eager to participate in reading.
HOW TO CHOOSE A GOOD BOOK
Stories should be appropriate for the child's age level. Many school or public libraries offer lists of books by age range and subject matter.
