Defining communication
There is no single definition of communication which satisfies everyone. In 1970, Frank Dance identified 126 published definitions. [1] To some people "communication" implies different, and sometimes conflicting, concepts. On the one hand, it means to have a thoughtful exchange of views, via a meaningful dialogue between two humans; however, it can also refer to a simple message transmitted without thought or appeals for feedback. With this latter definition, machines and "lower" animals can be said to communicate.

By Michael J. McDermott
Providing top-notch customer service and controlling costs are key mandates for leaders at most large organizations, but they are two objectives perennially at odds with each other. Customers crave one-on-one interaction with a living, breathing customer service representative, but automated response systems ("Press 1 if you'd like to hear your account balance. Press 2…") are more cost-effective - albeit often frustrating for the user. However, advances in voice-recognition technology, coupled with the spread of mobile applications, may soon present the perfect compromise solution for many enterprises. The convergence of several factors, including the Internet, advances in voice-recognition technologies and the boom in wireless, has spurred a tremendous amount of activity among a broad base of applications developers, enterprises and telecommunications carriers, according to The Kelsey Group, a Princeton, N.J.-based market research and consulting firm specializing in voice processing and e-commerce. It has identified more than 100 companies actively working with speech technology across a spectrum of applications and markets, and projects an annual market of $41 billion in speech-enabled applications by 2005.

Why Go to Speech Therapy?
Many teens and adults who stutter have been to speech therapy for their stuttering at least once in their lives. Some people have been through years of therapy. Just because you may have had treatment for your stuttering in the past does not mean you shouldn't consider it again. It is common for stuttering to change over time or for emotions and attitudes about your speech to change as you have new experiences. It is important for you to have a clear idea about your motivation for going to therapy because your reasons for seeking treatment will help you decide
  • The speech-language pathologist who is right for you; The amount, length, and cost of treatment; Possible goals for speech therapy; and, The amount of success to be expected.
Choosing a Speech-Language Pathologist
The key to success with any kind of treatment is finding someone who is knowledgeable about that particular treatment. This is especially true of stuttering. How do you find a speech pathologist who is right for you?

The following information about Speech-Language Pathology in Viet Nam was kindly provided by Dr Charlotte Ducote CADucote@aol.com , and while extremely comprehensive it does not cover all aspects speech therapy in Vietnam. Contributions from others are cordially invited. In Vietnam the terms "speech therapy" and "speech therapist" are used in preference to "speech-language pathology".
Dr Charlotte Ducote writes...
There has been great interest in speech therapy in many areas of Vietnam. It is, however, a nascent discipline in that southeast Asian country. Most of the interest seems to have been from rehabilitation specialists (physicians, physical therapists, and nurses in rehabilitation departments), dentists, and ear-nose-throat physicians. There has been attention from others as well, though.
