Speech therapy
Speech therapy is the corrective or rehabilitative treatment of physical and/or cognitive deficits/disorders resulting in difficulty with verbal communication . This includes both speech (articulation, intonation, rate, intensity) and language (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, both receptive and expressive language, including reading and writing). Depending on the nature and severity of the disorder, common treatments may range from physical strengthening exercises, instructive or repetitive practice and drilling, to the use of audio-visual aids. Speech and language therapists (SLTs) or speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide a wide range of services for all ages, in early intervention (ages 0-3 years old), preschool, primary and secondary schooling, home care, and hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and nursing homes. Professionals often work with stroke victims, individuals with Asperger's syndrome or speech disorders (e.g. lisps, stammers), and with the deaf and hearing impaired. SLPs also provide services for individuals with

Casa Futura Canada Stuttering Therapy Solutions since 1992, NOW in Canada Five year-old Alexandre Hyde, of Chatham, Ontario is quite impressed to shake hands with the World Middle Weight Champion boxer, Rubin "Hurricane" Carter , the keynote speaker at 2003 CAPS conference in Toronto, Ontario on August 8th 2003. Mr. Carter gave a moving presentation about his 22 years of imprisonment for murder, which was later overturned by the State of New Jersey Supreme Court. Rather than being embittered by his experience with racism , "Hurricane" has devoted his life to helping others who have been falsely imprisoned. He has exemplified how love for others, rather than hate, will knockout his opponents. Rubin stuttered when he was younger. Appropriate Treatments for Stuttering Speech Therapy remains the cornerstone to the elimination or reduction of stuttering. The great majority of those who stutter are helped by traditional therapy, especially when therapy begins at a young age. And research is available to document this. Yet despite a "lifetime" of therapy, some that stutter don't seem to be able to achieve satisfactory fluency, or are unable to maintain it. Especially outside of the therapy setting. Some individuals are helped by a not so new principal known as "delayed-auditory-feedback" (DAF). For many who stutter, this feedback, which seems akin to "singing with a choir" while speaking, may help.

    Archives Oral-Motor Speech Therapy
By Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson, M.S., CCC/SLP Nancy Sandoval is like lots of kids with Down syndrome. She can talk a blue streak, but few outside her immediate family can understand what she is saying. And even they have difficulty sometimes. Like many youngsters with low-tone muscle deficits, Nancy's oral muscles are not adequately developed to produce sounds clearly. But it doesn't have to be that way. In most cases these children can be taught to speak more clearly, but not with traditional speech therapy alone. Traditional therapy is based on a multi-sensory approach that deals with the production of speech. In simple terms, the therapist shows the child a ball and says "ball," then the child repeats the word. If hearing, vision and muscle tone are normal, this approach usually works. But many children simply do not have adequate muscle tone in the mouth for traditional speech therapy alone to be successful, and they end up frustrated. In contrast, oral-motor speech therapy is based on the premise that normal oral structures and patterns are necessary for normal speech. If the problem is poorly developed oral muscles, then the solution is to strengthen and train these muscles. Plus, children enjoy the oral-motor exercises so they don't fight therapy. They think they are playing because the therapy uses a hierarchy of horns, straws, and bubbles when actually they are learning to use their oral muscles to produce speech sounds.

Speech pathologist for 20-month-old's lack of speech?
March 2002 You need to get your son to an audiologist immediately! If it turns out his hearing is fine, then you've lost nothing, but if you don't find out now, you will lose PRECIOUS time. I went through all this with my daughter. She will be 4 next month and we just found out she is hard of hearing and needs a hearing aid. At 20 months, she was not talking or following directions, in fact, she didn't even say MOM until she was well over 2 and then it sounded like BO.I don't want to frighten you, but it is true that the sooner you catch a hearing problem, or any other problem, the better. Keep in mind that if you make an appointment now, it might take a few months to get him in to see an audiologist. By the way, the audiology clinic at childrens hospital in oakland is superb, and there is also a speech therapy clinic there. You can find that number on the UCB Parents Network Website. poncho i would definitely get a hearing test done just to eliminate one possible cause of speech delay. my daughter had a hearing test done at age 2 at Children's Hospital. it was in no way a traumatic experience for her ... they made the whole test rather fun. my daughter had a speech delay and the best thing i ever did was to put her in speech therapy. within six months her speech improved tremendously and her her level of frustration in not being about to communicate her desires dropped significantly. if your insurance does not cover speech therapy i suggest contacting the Regional Center of the East Bay (http://www.rceb.org/) mom of 2 big talkers

    Defining communication
There is no single definition of communication which satisfies everyone. In 1970, Frank Dance identified 126 published definitions. [1] To some people "communication" implies different, and sometimes conflicting, concepts. On the one hand, it means to have a thoughtful exchange of views, via a meaningful dialogue between two humans; however, it can also refer to a simple message transmitted without thought or appeals for feedback. With this latter definition, machines and "lower" animals can be said to communicate.
