Organization Research directions : The main objective of this team is the physicochemical study of the behavior of the metals in solution and at the interfaces, aimed at an understanding of their impact in the environment . This goal can be achieved by the qualitative and quantitative description of the structure-property-reactivity relations of the molecular constructs free in solution or present at the solid-liquid interfaces, by means of spectroscopy. Our knowhow based on our profession of physical chemists, covers both the chemical and structural characterization by photon spectroscopies of adsorbed, complexed, precipitated and dissolved species, and the identification and location at the sub-micron scales of the heterogeneous surface zones of the solids by instrumental and methodological developments. Subjects investigated today :
  • Complexation in aqueous solution of metallic cations with organic matter Themes Structural analysis of biological systems by vibrational spectroscopy (bacterial biofilms, yeast walls)

European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry 29 January - 2 February 2005 Budapest, Hungary The 10 th biennial European Winter Conference will be held in Hungary at the Budapest University of Economic Sciences and Public Administration. Being a brand new member of the European Union, Hungary will serve as an exciting and ideal venue of the Conference. The country is situated in the heart of Europe, between East and West, North and South. The Hungarian economy is the fastest growing economy in the region. More and more multinational companies establish their research and development centers in Hungary. This is accompanied by a strong local industry, a multitude of SMEs, which represents the most exciting development of the contemporary Hungarian economy. As a result, Budapest is currently growing into a major R+D center in Central Europe at the center of a new, significant market of the 21st century. Budapest is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful capitals in the world. It is easy to reach

XI ITALIAN-HUNGARIAN SYMPOSIUM ON SPECTROCHEMISTRY : NEW CHALLENGES IN HUMAN HEALTH PROTECTION - ANTROPIC AND REMOTE AREAS (VENICE, OCTOBER 2003)
Biennial conference organised by ISS, UCF, ELTE, IDPA-CNR, UNESCO and CORILA
The Italian-Hungarian Symposium on Spectrochemistry is now in its eleventh edition. This biennial conference, since its onset in 1983 , aims at providing scientists from both countries with a permanent forum for discussing the results of their studies in the field of human health and environmental protection, exchanging views on priorities for future action and planning further joint projects. The XI Symposium features seven oral sessions and one general poster session to be held throughout the entire duration of the event. The most recent advances of spectrochemistry and other analytical techniques for investigating current aspects of human health and environmental protection will be taken into account, in particular as regards the challenges posed by urban settings and remote areas. In this context, presentations will focus on issues such as pollution from industrial plants and motor vehicles, occupational hygiene, pathologies caused by urban living as well as health aspects of importance under extreme conditions (space, polar regions). As for all the previous editions of this event, a number of prominent scientists from other countries will also participate in the Symposium, thus further expanding the coverage of topics which by definition are of a global nature.

ISAS - A General Summary
The Institute of Spectrochemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, with sections in Dortmund and Berlin, is a scientific research establishment of the so-called "Blaue Liste" or "blue list" and, as such, is supported by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung together with the Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Forschung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen (Dortmund section) and the Senatsverwaltung für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kultur des Landes Berlin (Berlin section). The institute is governed by a society called the Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Spektrochemie und angewandten Spektroskopie e.V. (Society for the Advancement of Spectrochemistry and Applied Spectroscopy e.V.), Dortmund, with three members on the Executive Board. The institute has been joined contractually since 1993 with the University of Dortmund and is a member of the Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. It is led by two directors and currently has 106.5 posts including 37.5 posts for scientists.
Since its founding in 1952, ISAS has worked in the area of analytical spectroscopy, its work being directed mainly towards user orientated basic research. ISAS has carried out its research work and earned a great international reputation through an internal interdisciplinary cooperation between physicists and chemists and an external one with engineers, biologists and medics. ISAS has used its expertise to develop new methods and improve existing ones. To solve difficult analytical problems various methods have been combined, according to need (the so-called multi-method concept).
