Olympics ethics report shows top level 'pattern of deception'
February 8, 1999
Web posted at: 9:21 p.m. EST (0221 GMT) SALT LAKE CITY (CNN) The Independent Ethics Committee report due Tuesday on the Salt Lake City Olympic scandal details "a pattern of deception" involving the two top organizing committee officials, CNN has learned. Sources close to the investigation identified the two officials to be singled out as former Salt Lake Organization Committee (SLOC) President Tom Welch and former SLOC Vice President Dave Johnson. An official with the committee told CNN the report, to be made public Tuesday, runs some 250 pages "longer and more detailed than anyone expected." The official called the report a "huge document" that details "a pattern of deception" involving Welch and Johnson. Welch resigned from the committee in 1997 after pleading no contest to a charge of spousal abuse. Johnson was asked to resign early last month after it was alleged that scholarships, cash and lavish gifts had been given to members of the International Olympic Committee and their families before Salt Lake City was named host of the 2002 Winter Games.

This truly was a dream for me. I consider my trip to Atlanta for the 1996 Olympics one of the greatest experiences of my life. I went from the jubilation of witnessing history to the horror of realizing I left a half-hour before the bomb went off right where I was standing. I took many photos on my trip, the best of which can be viewed in a 34-picture slideshow at: View Slideshow of 1996 Olympics I went back to Centennial Park recently and took 11 follow-up shots of how the park now looks. Web posted at: 3:47 a.m. EST (0847 GMT) SALT LAKE CITY (CNN) Four groups of investigators on two continents are continuing to examine bribery allegations following the resignations on Friday of the president and vice president of the Salt Lake Olympic organizing committee. Two other Salt Lake senior executives were placed on paid leave over allegations that bribes helped land the 2002 Winter Games. The resignations of Frank Joklik , president and CEO of the Olympic committee, and David Johnson, vice president, came amid disclosures that civic boosters gave money at least $70,000 in one case to members of the International Olympic Committee to further their efforts to secure the games. Johnson Joklik and Johnson helped Salt Lake land the games, although Joklik has said he knew nothing of bribes during his tenure.

Olympic Factsheets History of the Ancient Olympics The first Olympic Games were held in 776 BC. They began as a religious festival, were held every four years and continued for a thousand years. They were held in a sacred, fertile valley of Ancient Greece at a place called Olympia. Athletes (derived from athlos, a contest) came to Olympia and trained full time for ten months. They had to undergo an examination by a ten member panel who assessed them on their parentage, character and physical endowments. As the games approached, thousands of spectators converged on Olympia, transforming the little village into a thriving metropolis. At the first games in 776 BC, until 724 BC, the only event held was the stadium-length foot race (stade). The length of the race was based on the legend that Hercules, the god of Physical Strength, ran this distance in one breath. The earliest recorded winner at the Olympics was Coroebus of Elis who won the 776 BC stade race. At later Olympiads the "diaulos" (400 yards) and then the "dolichos" (3.3 miles or 24 stadia) were added. Although there were no stop watches, legends grew as one runner was said to have outsped a hare and another to have beaten a horse. In 680 BC chariot racing appeared and proved to be one of the most exciting tests of the Olympic Games. The charioteers were professionals who raced over nine miles in the hippodrome. The winners, who lined up to receive the trophy, were the wealthy owners. Thus, though women were barred from competing at the Games, they were sometimes declared winners because they owned the horses and chariots. Although overshadowed by the chariot racing, the horse racing also provided a spectacle. The track was one lap of 600 yards, where the jockeys rode naked and bareback, without saddle or stirrups. The horses were virtually uncontrollable and there was a good deal of bumping between horses.

'Personal Gift List' RELATED STORIES, SITES ATLANTA (CNN) A month before his city was selected to host the 1996 Summer Olympics, Atlanta Games chief Billy Payne wrote a memo suggesting a college scholarship, medical care and other gifts for International Olympic Committee members considering Atlanta's bid. Payne spokesman Lee Echols confirmed the contents of the memo which included the proposal that Libyan IOC member Bashir Mohamed Attarabulsi receive free medical treatment at Emory University but said the suggestions in the note were merely "ideas." "Billy's a creative, ideas-oriented person," said Echols, who said Payne told him, "None of the ideas were ever seriously discussed. No one took the musings as anything but that musings. The collective good judgment of our (bid) team was all that we needed."
