Runner earns bronze medal on world stage Special Olympics athlete cherishes trip to Ireland NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER To the shopping crowds at Camino Real Marketplace, Daniel Winslow is a familiar sight as he races around the parking lot rounding up shopping carts and picking up trash. The 27-year-old groundskeeper drew a bigger crowd in Ireland last month when he raced his way to a bronze medal in the half-marathon at the Special Olympics World Games. Even before that he was in the spotlight. In front of a crowd of 75,000 people from around the world, he ran with the torch into the Dublin stadium to signal the start of the games. Mr. Winslow was honored this week when Santa Barbara city officials issued a proclamation declaring Santa Barbara Special Olympics World Games Week. Now back on the job, the athlete had time to talk about the competition, which drew 7,000 athletes from around the world. "I expected to be first, but I finally achieved one of my biggest dreams," he said. He ran the 13.5-mile route "past planes and cows and horses and sheep" in 2 hours, 2 minutes and 44 seconds. The gold medalist pulled in about 18 minutes ahead of him. The race was on the last day of the games, June 28, which was thankfully cool, he said. His parents and sister were on hand to cheer him on to the finish.
