81. Paralympic History
special olympics International focuses on participation of everyone and to date, second only to the Olympic Games this the largest Games in Paralympic history.
http://www.usaba.org/Pages/parahisty.html
The Paralympic History Overview
The Paralympics are a multi-sport, multi-disability competition of elite, world-class, disabled athletes. Although similar in scope to the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games provide an elite competition opportunity to athletes with a functional disability, which precludes their involvement in open competition of the Olympic Games. Paralympic athletes go through rigorous training year-round to prepare for their respective events. They are the best of the best, who through determination and hard work, earn the honor of representing the United States on the competitive playing field at the Paralympic Games. The Paralympic Games are held approximately two weeks after the Olympic Games in the same host city/country. The Paralympic Games are distinctly different than the Special Olympic World Games. The two, which are often confused as one in the same, are totally separate competitions. Each Games are developed by entirely different organizations which have different objectives. The Paralympic Games provide world-class competition for elite disabled athletes at the highest level. Much like Olympians, Paralympians compete for gold, silver and bronze medals against the best-disabled athletes in the world. Special Olympics International focuses on participation of everyone and involves athletes from ages 8 to 80 with mental retardation. All participants are considered winners and receive medals. The first Paralympic Games was held in Rome, Italy in 1960. Four hundred athletes from 23 countries participated. Since its humble beginnings, the Paralympics has blossomed and grown in size and complexity. The Paralympic Games is part and parcel of the Olympic Games. The Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee organized the 1988 Paralympics to be held in the Olympic venues two weeks after the Olympic Games. Barcelona and Lillehammer followed suit hosting the summer and winter Paralympic Games respectively, utilizing a similar time frame.

MUNSTER
LEINSTER Connaught Special Olympic Team/Club Championship of 25 March 2004

The inaugural Special Olympics Connaught Club Championship was held in the Commercial Boat Club, Galway on 25 March 2004. Teams from Rehab Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim; St. Anthony's Castlebar, Co. Mayo; St. Michaels Castlerea, Co. Roscommon and Celtic Table Tennis Club, Co. Mayo took part.
In the first match St. Anthony's took on Rehab Ballinamore, with their Capt. Kevin Gilhooly, who was undefeated in the last Area Games. This proved to be a very close and exciting match, with the result decided by individual skills. St. Anthony's Joseph Stack beat Ballinamore's Peter Green 11/6, 11/6 and 11/5. Kevin Gilhooly, Ballinamore beat Paul Kavanagh, St. Anthony's 11/9, 11/5, 9/11 and 11/7. Kevin Gilhooly, Ballinamore beat Joseph Stack, St. Anthony's 11/6, 11/9 and 11/8. St. Anthony's Capt. Paul McEllin beat Peter Green, Ballinamore 11/6, 11/5 and 11/2. Grace O'Malley scored a very high total of 141 in the Individual Skills to beat Angela McCrann, Joseph Guckian beat Michele Finerty to get two points back for Ballinamore. The final result hinged on the fact that Paul Kavanagh had earlier taken a game off Kevin Gilhooly. Final score - St. Anthony's 9 points and Rehab, Ballinamore 8 points.
In the other semi-final Celtic Table Tennis Club met St. Michael's Castlerea. St. Michael's had a new young team and were up against it with the more experienced team of World Games Bronze Medallist Noel Lydon and European Bronze Medallist Brid Walsh, assisted by talented Individual Skills players Noel Brennan and Kiera Joyce. The St. Michaels team of Peter Dolan, Jim Reynolds, Patrick Hatter. Simon Lambert and Martina O'Reilly tried their best, and the experience will stand to their good in future Games. Credit to Bernie and Bernadette for having the team looking great in their school colours.

The Special Olympics is a program that allows physically and mentally challenged persons of all levels of ability to take part in organized athletic events. The First International Special Olympics Games were held at Soldier Field, Chicago, in 1968. Since then, millions of children and adults have participated in Special Olympics events. Before athletes can take part in Special Olympics events, an application form must be completed. In addition to questions on demographics, this form asks for information concerning specific medical problems. In particular, information is requested about cervical spine radiographs and atlantoaxial instability in athletes with Down syndrome. Special Olympics athletes must also undergo a preparticipation physical examination by a licensed examiner every three years. One review At the 1995 Special Olympic World Summer Games, comprehensive vision screening was conducted to determine the prevalence of visual anomalies in this select group.

Corvallis Tourism and Special Olympics are looking for volunteers to assist with the Games. If you would like to help with this wonderful event, please contact Donna at 503-248-0600, ext. 30 Horner moves ahead Corvallis Tourism is vitally interested in the success of the Horner Museum and encourages individuals and businesses to contribute to the fund-raising campaign through the Benton County Historical Society (929-6230). Museums and cultural activities are incredibly important to the growth of tourism in any town or city. A new study from the Travel Industry Association of America and Smithsonian Magazine shows continued and growing interest by travelers to experience cultural, arts, historic and heritage activities. This study shows a remarkable 81 percent of U.S. adults who traveled in the past year, or 118 million, are considered historic/cultural travelers. These travelers included historical or cultural activities on almost 217 million person-trips last year, up 13 percent from 192 million in 1996. (A person-trip is one person on one trip traveling 50 miles or more from home, one way.)

Special Olympics Web links What are the Special Olympics? Special Olympics competitions, including the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games, are patterned after the Olympic Games. Athletes around the world train for and compete in more than 15,000 games, meets, and tournaments in summer and winter sports each year. Selected athletes from nearly 150 countries then go on to compete in World Games every two years, alternating between summer and winter Games. By assigning athletes to divisions according to their age and abilities, Special Olympics gives every athlete a reasonable chance to win. Athletes from all divisions may advance to Chapter, National, and World Games. There’s a chance for people without mental retardation to get into the Games. A program called Unified Sports® brings persons without mental retardation and of comparable age and athletic ability, together on the same team with persons with mental retardation. Unified Sports® was started in 1987, and it helps to integrate athletes with mental retardation into school and community sports programs. Unified teams from round the globe will compete in the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games. During the ’99 Games, competition in 19 sports will be held at venues throughout the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill area of North Carolina.
