Special Olympics Kentucky
Last updated on January 7, 2004 To provide year-round sports training and competition opportunities for children and adults with mental disabilities. Description:
Special Olympics Kentucky is a non-profit organization that provides sports training and competition programs for children and adults with mental disabilities throughout Kentucky. Programs and opportunities are available for Special Olympics athletes at both the local and state levels. Special Olympics Kentucky has a small staff that administers the programs statewide. But, by in-large, volunteers are the "driving force" behind the program. Volunteer opportunities range from a one-day committment to on-going coaching opportunities.
History:
Special Olympics founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver started sports programs in the mid 1960's for persons with mental disabilities. Through these programs it was learned that these individuals with mental disabilities could develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Thus, the Special Olympics program officially began in 1968 with the first ever International Games in Chicago. Three countries participated in those Games and today the movement has grown world-wide to where there are over 165 countries with accredited Special Olympics programs.

  • What Are The Special Olympics?
    What Are The Special Olympics?
The Special Olympics are athletic events held for qualifying individuals. These individuals must be 8 years of age or older and have mental retardation or a cognitive delay which affects their ability to learn or obtain work in some area. Each athlete is trained for one or more large motor events with the help of a coach. After training the athlete then competes in the targeted event with other Special Olympics athletes. [top] [home]
    History of the Special Olympics
In the 1960’s a woman named Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a Day Camp for people with mental retardation. As she worked with these individuals she discovered that many of them were able to be more successful in their gross motor skills than had ever been expected. As each mentally impaired person further developed these skills it enhanced their growth in other aspects and raised their self-esteem and self-motivation. By 1968 Shriver organized the First International Special Olympic Games. They were held at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.

What is the History and
Meaning of the Olympic Games?
an essay, by
Michael Simos

6th grade, Montgomery Elementary, Atlanta (September 1995)
Foreword Why are the Olympic Games so important? Why will people from all around the world come in the summer of 1996 to Atlanta to either watch or compete in them? Why is it that billions of people around the world will sit in front of their television sets to watch these games? To answer these questions we need to go back in history to find the meaning of the Olympic Games. 1. The Ancient Games. In ancient Greece, sports and competition were very important. The Greeks believed that physical exercise and mental training were connected to each other. The Greek word for education meant the development of the entire human being and could not be divided into physical and mental education, because the mind cannot exist without the body, and the body has no meaning without the mind. Their rule of thumb was, "Educate children with gymnastics and music." Religion encouraged this kind of education, and great athletic and musical contests were held in holy places, under the protection of the gods, and in front of thousands of spectators from all over Greece. The contests were called Games, and the most famous were held at the Sanctuary of Olympia in southwestern Greece. The Olympian or Olympic Games started in 776 BC, and were held every four years in honor of Zeus, the king of the mythical Greek gods. They were at their peak in the 5th and 4th centuries BC, but they were suppressed in 394 AD by the Roman emperor Theodosius I.

The area began in the middle 70s. Dave Felix was the first area director. Meetings were held in a store front on Lincoln Ave. in Totowa, NJ. The state track and field event was held at McGuire Air Force Base. It was only a one day event back then. The number of programs involved were far fewer than there are now. The winter games were held at Legends in Vernon NJ. Stan Javitz was the next director and his meetings were held at the NJDC in Totowa, NJ. More programs became involved. William Paterson's football field was used for the area track and field event for many years before moving to Wayne Valley High School. The State Track and Field event moved to William Paterson College, followed Princeton University, and is now held at Trenton State / College of NJ. Rich Deska is the present Director.

Volunteer Luke Cassidy witnesses an emotionally charged end to a ‘brilliant week.’ Such was the overwhelming feeling of goodwill tinged with sadness at last night’s closing ceremony that even a hardened cynic such as myself danced arm in arm with all around and sang along happily to Westlife without as much as a comment on the merits of boybands. It was an emotionally charged end to a brilliant week. In post-Celtic tiger Ireland, the Special Olympics returned the fame of the Céad Míle Fáilte that seemed to go out the window as soon as some money came into the country. The week spent in the Phoenix Park was definitely one of the best of my life. It was heartening to witness such camaraderie and I don’t think I said hello to as many people in my lifetime as I did in that one week. For me, the best part of the week was the final awards ceremony. The scouts that acted as marshals during the awards sang

Who We Are
Special Olympics New Hampshire (SONH) is a non-profit organization providing sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with mental challenges. Currently 2,500 participants and thousands of volunteers, friends and family members take part in SONH activities.
Our Philosophy
SONH is founded on the belief that people with mental challenges can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports, adapted as necessary to meet the needs of those with mental and physical challenges. SONH believes that consistent training is indispensable to the development of sports skills and that competition among those with equal abilities is the most appropriate means of testing those skills, measuring progress and providing incentives for personal growth. Our History The Special Olympics concept was born in the early 1960's when Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a day camp for people with mental challenges. She observed the great joy campers experienced when playing sports and resolved to create a program that would both meet physical fitness needs and boost self-esteem.

The Olympic Games originated in ancient Greece as a salute to mythological gods. The Games eventually evolved into a group of sporting events that take place every fourth summer and winter seasons and involve athletes from most countries throughout the world. Although the games were eliminated during the early Christian era, they were resurrected in 1896 and have been staged for 2 weeks every fourth year since then. The modern Olympic Games have adhered to this agenda, except during times of such international conflicts as World War I and II. United Nations Recognizes Burson-Marsteller's
Special Olympics Campaign Burson-Marstellar News Release
Beijing , 26 February, 2004 - Burson-Marsteller (BM) Beijing 's Special Olympics China campaign, titled Shanghai Wins 2007 Special Olympic Games: Breaking Down Cultural Barriers and Making Dreams Come True , was recently selected for honorable mention by the 2003 United Nations Grand Award for outstanding achievement in public relations. Jointly sponsored by the Department of Public Informati on (DPI) and the International Public Relations Association (IPRA), the annual award was established in 1990 to recognize excellence in public relations campaigns that address priority issues of the United Nations. BM's campaign was recognized for its ongoing support of Special Olympics International, which provides sports training and athletic competition in Olympic-type sports for children and adults with mental retardation. The campaign effectively overcame significant cultural barriers and misunderstanding to achieve both national and international support and recognition for the Special Olympics movement in China . Prior to the campaign both the Special Olympics organization and the issue of mental retardation had a low profile in China . Though active in China for many years, Special Olympics had made little headway in penetrating the Chinese education system, health system and philanthropic establishment. D eep-rooted cultural taboos, longstanding traditions and a lack of governmental support had impeded the growth of the Special Olympics in China .

Mission The mission of Special Olympics Florida (SOFL) is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people with mental retardation, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. The ultimate objective of Special Olympics Florida is to help people with mental retardation participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing the public's awareness of their capabilities and needs. History The concept of Special Olympics began in the early 1960s when Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a day camp in her own backyard for people with mental retardation. From that experience, it was clear that these individuals were far more capable in sports and physical activities than many experts believed. In 1968, Mrs. Shriver organized the first International Special Olympics Games at Soldier Field in Chicago, in the belief that the lessons these athletes learned through sports would translate into new competence and success in school, in the workplace, and in the community. Above all, Mrs. Shriver wanted the families and neighbors of people with mental retardation to see what these individuals could accomplish, to take pride in their efforts, and to rejoice in their victories.
