  • Boom and Bust
    Exploring Bannack, Montana's Colorful Past
    Suggested grade level: 7 - 8
In the summer of 1862, some 56 years after Lewis and Clark traversed the area, John White and William Eades discovered gold in Grasshopper Creek. A large influx of miners rushed to the area to stake a claim, and Bannack was born. A lively gold rush town, Bannack later became the first territorial capital and the location of the first successful dredging operation in the U.S. Using Internet sites and video, students will discover how Bannack was established, what life was like there, and why it eventually died and became a ghost town. The lesson also includes an interactive panning for gold activity.
    Hanging The Sheriff

    The Story of Henry Plummer
Suggested grade level: 7 - 8 In 1863, Henry Plummer was elected the second sheriff of Bannack, MT, a mining camp that became Montana’s first capital. Plummer had a shady history and was later accused of being the leader of a notorious gang of robbers called the Road Agents. A group called the Vigilantes took justice into their own hands and hung Plummer on Jan. 10, 1864, without the benefit of a legal trial. Students will hold a mock trial to review evidence for and against Henry Plummer. Using the Internet and video, students will gather evidence to exonerate Plummer or find him guilty for murder and robbery.

From the Beginning of Time,
Online: Using the Internet to Explore History

This lesson provides activities for Internet-based history lessons. The main activities require that students have access to the Internet in the classroom or in a lab. If students do not have Internet access, teachers can use the resources suggested here to create a variety of lessons.
If you have access to the Internet, but you don't have Internet access in your classroom or a lab you can use at times, don't give up. There are still ways to use the Internet:
  • Do you have a technology person or a technology support department? If so, ask them if they can project a computer screen. If you have one computer with Internet access, a projector can put the computer screen up on a big screen that the whole class can see.
  • Send students to the library, computer labs, or their home computers to do research (you can make the Internet one of many resources that your students may use).
  • Use the Internet for research on a topic. Searching on the Internet can be easier than looking through indices, card files, or catalogs in a library.
  • Use the lessons you find on the Internet. Most media sites (tv, film, magazines, newspapers) have lesson plans, teacher resources, and activities. Most of these are not dependent on Internet access.

    Introduction
In this lesson students will learn about the cultural and social importance of dolls. They will view and discuss a variety of dolls from the Alexander Girard Collection at the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico and then make a doll of their own out of scrap fabric, newspaper, yarn and other assorted materials. This lesson will teach students about the variety of dolls made around the world and the cultural values they convey. This is a thematic multidisciplinary lesson primarily addressing the areas of art, social studies and language arts.
The Big Question for this lesson is "What do dolls communicate about the cultures from which they come?" Student Outcomes
After completing a lesson on dolls around the world, students will understand:
  • How dolls represent the cultures from which they come.
  • That dolls are made of a variety of different materials.
  • Dolls help to teach children and adults about the society in which they live.
  • Dolls are used for different reasons and in a variety of ways, i.e. social, ceremonial, educational, decorative.

How To Write A Lesson Plan
    By Beverly DeMott, Ph.D.
Before designing a lesson plan, the teacher must think about her/his students and the purpose for the lesson. What is it that the students need to learn? What is the lesson supposed to accomplish? In answering these two key questions, several things must be considered: the age of the students the grade level of the students learning styles of the students cultural and emotional needs of the students what the students may already know about the subject or material what it is EXACTLY that you want the students to learn the amount of time that will be needed to adequately teach the lesson the materials, equipment, and technology that will be needed planning for how you will acquire the materials, equipment, technology or field experience you will need for your lesson and scheduling with other professionals (media specialist, assistant principals, computer lab teacher, guest speakers, volunteer helpers, parent helpers, etc.) special permissions that may be needed- field trip forms, special viewing permits, permission to videotape or photograph

    BEACH BALL PRACTICE ACTIVITIES
    GRADES: 1-7
Students with disabilities often need more practice than other students to master skills. Using a "programmed" beach ball is a fun way to fit drill and practice in without boring the kids. This idea was shared with me at a math workshop I attended last summer.
    MATERIALS:
    • beach balls (as many as you can affordthey're very versatile) permanent marking pen
    METHOD:
  • Blow up the beach ball and hold it with the air hole facing upward. Beach balls are already nicely sectioned (kind of like an orange). So, all you have to do next is draw lines horizontally with a permanent marking pen to create several little boxes on your beach ball. Program the boxes with various information that students need to practice (ideas follow). Some Ideas: In each box, write a number from one to nine. Throw the ball to students and ask them what numbers their thumbs are on. When they tell you, ask them to either add, subtract, multiply or divide. This is an easy activity to individualize because you can ask different students to do different things with the numbers. I also found that it helps students with mathematics vocabulary. (Some of my students always say "take away" or "times" rather than the proper vocabulary). You could even say "find the product" to further reinforce vocabulary.

Depending on their level of ability, children and adults with disabilities will be able to attempt the following activities. You are the best judge of what the people in your care are capable of. Remember to always have patience and encourage students to do ask much as they can on their own. There is a tremendous amount of satisfaction that comes with being able to complete tasks on your own - always keep that in mind. The key is to keep levels of ability in mind at all times and remember to be supportive - every step of the way. For those with visual impairment, tactile activities are imperative (clay, masks, puppets, etc.)
