He granted me permission to use his graphics to make more special needs graphics available for special needs children and adults. If you are a graphic designer, and would like to make special needs graphics and background sets, please send them to either/or me or Paul . We will make them available for special needs people and the parents of special needs children to make webpages. Single Parent
Special Needs
Adoption
This page is an unofficial guide to Single Parent Adoption. At this time, 11/10/99, I am in the process of adopting, more on that here
This is an unofficial page. Any questions asked and answers given, are as one friend to another. For the final word consult a local authority, doctor, case manager or councilor. Each state is slightly different, what is expected in New York may be illegal in California. This page is meant as a forum for sharing ideas and experiences, not as a definitive legal or professional source.
"To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world."
- Anonymous

The Focus
It is my intention, with this page, to focus on domestic, special needs adoption by single adults. By domestic I mean a child that is living in the USA and born of US biological parents. Special needs by legal definition can include many things, but the most significant is an older child. If you are looking at foreign or infant adoption, you may find some useful information here, but that is not the primary content of this site. The Site Forum
This will probably be the the point most people will return to. It is intended as a place to ask questions, relate difficulties, tell about successes and share with the rest of the world. I understand the desire for anonymity on the internet, but I ask that you include a minimum of your gender and what part of the country you are from. E.g. Female, midwest or Male west coast. If you are comfortable with doing so include your name and state, John from Indiana. If you are talking about specific laws it is very helpful to all to know the state.

109. YMCA CRS Services; Special Needs Unit
Provides respite care services for families with children who are clients of the Regional Center in San Diego. Services are provided to approximately 400 clients annually.
http://www.ymcacrs.org/services/snu.html
Special Needs Unit (SNU)
The Special Needs Unit of the YMCA Childcare Resource Service receives funding from the San Diego Regional Center for the Developmentally Disabled to provide respite care services for families with children who are Regional Center consumers. Respite services and resources are provided throughout San Diego County.
What is Respite Care?
YMCA CRS Respite Program provides occasional child care breaks for families who have children with developmental disabilities. Parents may use their respite in a variety of ways including time to engage in leisure activities, time to spend one-on-one with spouse or other family members, time for running errands, keeping appointments, or just some free time to regenerate. YMCA CRS offers both In-Home and Out-of-Home Respite options.
Who is eligible for Respite?
Any family with a child who has a developmental disability or is at risk of a developmental disability and is a San Diego Regional Center consumer may be eligible for respite. Any parent who is a Regional Center consumer and is in need of occasional breaks may also be eligible for respite. YMCA CRS respite program serves all families referred by San Diego Regional Center who have children ages 0-18. All referrals to our department for respite services come directly from the Regional Center. Regional Center case managers will make the determination if you qualify for respite and how many hours per month of care you will be given. Ask your case manager about respite services!

Special Needs Educational Advisor

Contributing Editor, 2e: Twice-Exceptional Newsletter
Welcome to my site – I hope you find it helpful. If this is your first visit, click here for a guide to the site. This site is named after the book Uniquely Gifted: Identifying and Meeting the Needs of the Twice-Exceptional Student , edited by Kiesa Kay. Twice-exceptional children (that is, intellectually gifted children with special needs such as AD/HD, learning disabilities, Asperger Syndrome, etc.) have a hard time of it in our education system - because their giftedness can mask their special needs and their special needs hide their giftedness, they are often labeled as "lazy", "unmotivated", "not trying". Many people don't even realize that a child can be both gifted and learning disabled; however, Linda Silverman, Ph.D., the director of the Gifted Development Center has found that fully 1/6 of the gifted children tested at the GDC have a learning difference of some type In addition to being special needs educational advisor for families with twice-exceptional children and Contributing Editor to the new publication

Our Policy
The Council's Policy for Special Educational Needs and SEN Strategic Plan sets out the principles and arrangements to ensure that children's special educational needs are met. This includes ensuring that their needs are identified and assessed as early as possible and that they have access to educational experiences that are
  • Broad Balanced Differentiated Appropriate to their individual needs.
We are committed to enabling children to have their needs met in schools and settings as close to their home as possible. We want to provide parents and their children with greater choice, flexibility and opportunities within the education system in the borough. We also recognise the importance of pupil and parental involvement in all aspects of planning, delivery and review.
Joining a school
The Special Educational Needs Panel, on behalf of the LEA, manages the admission arrangements for pupils with statements. Parents are requested to express a preference for a particular school for their child providing that:
  • the school is suitable for the child's age, ability and aptitude and the special educational needs set out in part 2 of the statement

Selected Media Coverage For Older Drivers, "The Options Are Terrible' INTRODUCTION In 2000, 35 million Americans, or 12.4 percent of the total U.S. population, were over age 65, and almost 4.5 million (or 1.6 percent of the total population) were over age 85. By 2030, the number of older Americans will more than double; 9 million alone will be over age 85. Almost all of those seniors will have been licensed drivers for most of their lives, including many seniors too disabled to walk far or use conventional public transportation. Seniors in the future will be even more dependent on the car than today's elderly. The reauthorization of the federal transportation law, the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21), presents an excellent opportunity for Congress to respond directly to the diverse mobility needs of the elderly. This brief challenges the easy assumptions that underlie most policy debates on transportation and the elderly, it describes how an aging society adds to a range of transportation problems, and it discusses special approaches and solutions necessary to meet the mobility needs of over 70 million seniors in the coming decades. Parents Growing Up
Premature infants, known as preemies, come into the world earlier than full-term infants. Prematurity occurs when a pregnancy lasts fewer than 37 weeks; full-term infants are born 38 to 42 weeks after they are conceived. Age in premature babies is often defined in postconceptional weeks (the number of weeks after the baby was conceived) until the baby is 40 weeks old, which is the average age of a full-term baby. There are many causes of preterm delivery. Sometimes it's caused by the mother's lifestyle choices during pregnancy : smoking, drinking alcohol, using drugs, eating poorly, not gaining enough weight, exposure to physical stress, and poor prenatal care are all causes of preterm delivery. Often, however, the cause is not within the mother's control. The mother could have a hormone imbalance, a structural abnormality of the uterus , a chronic illness, an infection, or several other things that could lead to a premature birth. In addition, preterm delivery is more likely when a woman is over age 35, under age 19, or is carrying multiple fetuses. And sometimes the cause is simply unknown. Premature infants have many special needs that make their care different from that of full-term infants, which is why they often begin their lives after delivery in a

Links to resources and information for caregivers and parents of children with special needs.
http://www.geocities.com/katiegirl_59/
Welcome to our place. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed working on it. I have created this, as we are the parents of a special needs child. As well, we have a son who has issues from being the sibling of a special needs sister and who himself has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit.
We have created this page in hopes of providing support to parents and caregiver's of special needs children and adults alike. We have created pages for both of our children. Ashlee's is titled Ashlee's Story - everything about her from A to Z. Tyler's page is titled Tyler's Place - here you will learn all about Tyler and you will find out that his favorite sport is hockey and his favorite team is "Toronto Maple Leafs".
Also very dear to our heart is the Siblings R Special 2 page we created. This page was created, as having a child with special needs we as parents unintentionally lose sight of the issues concerning the siblings, as they sometimes get lost in the cracks by no fault of anyone
