Adapted Access Selections The New York Institute for Special Education(NYISE) is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian educational facility which provides quality programs for children who are blind or visually disabled, emotionally and learning disabled and preschoolers who are developmentally delayed. The school was founded in 1831 as The New York Institution for the Blind as one of the first schools in the United States to provide an educational program for children who were blind or visually impaired. Early in the twentieth century, the name was changed to The New York Institute for the Education of the Blind to emphasize the educational character of the school. A pictorial history of the school and a major collection of disability links called the Blindness Resource Center are available at this site. Today, our

Special Needs
Under the School Act , school boards are required to provide every resident student with an education. That includes providing access to special education programs for students with special needs. Whether a student is gifted and talented or has mild/moderate or severe needs, specialized learning programs provide the unique educational opportunities they need to reach their potential. Parents are involved in decisions relating to programs and services for their child. Assessment and Identification of Students with Special Needs

Bullying in special education and special needs schools
The largest group of callers to the UK National Workplace Bullying Advice Line are teachers . Some of these calls, and some of the most distressing, are from teachers working in special education environments with young, teenage or adult clients with special needs. The serial bully is attracted to roles with opportunities for power and control over vulnerable clients and employees who, because of their dedication and commitment to clients, are easily manipulated with guilt. In the UK, government policy has been to move special needs children into mainstream schools, ostensibly for reasons of integration, but in reality to save money. Dumping emotionally disturbed and behaviourally disturbed children in a class of 35 children is a recipe for disaster but budget targets have to be met. On my Advice Line I have heard cases of special needs children being denied the opportunity to take examinations because it is estimated they will achieve a low pass which will adversely affect the school's position in league tables. Special education and special needs children and adults are often the focus for bullying, harassment and abuse. To see if you've experienced bullying, click

  • Homeschooling Children With Physical Disabilities Mailgroup . This discussion group is made up of homeschooling parents of children with disabilities that affect their strength or coordination, such as muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, or other conditions of the muscles, nervous system or joints. Although some of our children have other disabilities, and we are happy to discuss those when relevant, we focus on the ones that impair their gross and fine motor skills. We especially focus on homeschooling and dealing with the disabilities in that context. Anyone who wishes to join our discussion should e-mail HSPhysDis@aol.com

Special Services will advise the Transportation Department of the specific requirements.
Transportation, when set up by Special Services, is curb to curb whenever possible. In some instances, students may be required to walk a short distance to a stop location. No stops will be placed within apartment complexes. Some students requiring special transportation may be picked up and dropped at home. This determination will be made on a case-by-case basis. The determination is based on whether the student has a physical disability which prevents them from walking to a corner safely.

If you find the information on this site useful, please take a few minutes to fill in my visitor form at the top of this page, or drop me a quick e-mail with your comments to admin@dyslexichelp.co.uk There are some very USEFUL BOOKS to help you understand Dyslexia and to help your child. And some thoughts from children on how it feels to be dyslexic - "Plees help" This site came about when I found out that my son, Callum was diagnosed as a dyslexic (at the age of 6) and I researched across the internet to find out and understand as much as I could in order to help him. His father is also dyslexic but as a child was labeled stupid and disruptive and had an unhappy time at school. We can only hope that now there is more awareness about Dyslexia, children diagnosed with it will have a better time at school with the support of parents and teachers who are now more geared up to support it within mainstream schools. They estimate that 1 in 10 children have Dyslexic tendencies which is about 2-3 children per average class. The Government's latest Code of Practice is pushing schools more and more into supporting children with special needs and to include them rather than exclude them.

A Practical Guide
Adopting The International Child With Special Needs
A Practical Guide By Teri Bell
Choosing An Agency and a Program
The first major step, is to learn as much as possible about the US agency which will represent you overseas. This may or may not be the same agency which is performing your adoption study. When choosing your US agency be prepared to ask informed questions about their international programs in general.
  • What is the scope and type of information (e.g.: medical, social, background) which you can expect to be made available to you? Who is representing you and the child in the child's country of birth? How long has this program been established? How many children have been placed from this program? Is the agency willing to put you in contact with other families who have had placements from this program? (It is important that you have a several of families to talk to before, during and after your placement.) Is your agency willing to help you find adoptive parent groups in your area so that you can access adoption support and current information?
Adopting special needs children, requires more specific information:
