Video Teaching
By Debbie Bleeck-Imming and Sharla Pitzen
Video teaching promotes learning through the use of audio and visual techniques that will supplement a child's education both at school and home. Videos capture their interest by utilizing a desired activity that can enhance the achievement of goals and objectives. Desired skills can be learned or reinforced by repeated viewings of the video, which increases the likeliness of skill retention. Video teaching is an independent learning experience without drills or one-to-one instruction. Your child will be able to watch the video as often as they like, increasing the likelihood of skill mastery. Children progress at their own pace without external pressure or demands. Watching realistic, motivating, and entertaining videos promotes increased attention and generalization. Choosing the appropriate teaching video is very important. Be sure the videos target specific goals and objectives that are appropriate for your child or student's development. In addition, verify that the content is presented in a highly stimulating and entertaining fashion using a variety of settings. Look for the utilization of high interest themes, mascots, music, and teaching strategies that will engage your child in the video. What could be more perfect than to give your little one "additional learning" and fun at the same time? When chosen wisely, video teaching can truly be a "Golden Educational Opportunity!"

Special Educational Needs and the Foreign Service Child
There are unique challenges inherent in raising children with special needs, and this is especially so in the internationally mobile lifestyle of the Foreign Service. There has been a significant effort to increase the number of programs for children with special needs in American-international schools around the world. However, the quality of these programs varies greatly from school to school, and even from year to year. While more children who have mild learning disabilities are adequately served in international schools, children with moderate to severe disabilities still encounter major challenges. In addition to the lack of available programs overseas, very often there is also a lack of other support or therapeutic specialists to serve the requirements of special needs children. The Family Liaison Office strongly urges families to carefully research their options before bidding on and accepting an overseas assignment. There are several offices in the Department of State that work together to assist families of children with special needs. Special Needs Resource Information from the Department of State . Even though Kevin Hitchel had never worked in a construction zone, he wanted to be a civil engineer the day he walked into his high school's construction class. "I didn't know what I would be doing, but I knew it would help me," said Hitchel, who graduated last month from Clear Lake High School. By then, the 18-year-old knew how to draw a blueprint, fix a baseball-size hole in a wall, outfit a room with electrical wires and recite the names and functions of more than 100 hand tools and household fixtures. As business owners request more experience from their entry-level employees, the nation's high schools are beginning to train not just educate students such as Hitchel.

Carolina Autism Resource and Evaluation Center
Autism is is a life long developmental disability that affects fifteen in every 10,000 people.
People who have autism experience communication and socialization difficulties. While autism affects people of a racial, ethnic and social l backgrounds, its cause is unknown. With proper diagnosis and services, people with autism can lead productive lives. Diagnosis, however is often complex and involved. While some of the cases of autism may be identified through behavioral observation alone, others may require extensive evaluation Including family history, psychological testing and medical studies. Because autism occurs so rarely and has varied symptoms, it is best that specially trained professionals conduct the evaluation and make the assessment. Children with autism often learn in non-traditional ways. Learning should begin at a young age, and early intervention is critical for the development of children with autism. Families and early intervention professionals often want and need help with developing treatment plans and effective learning teaching skills.

Many occupations today require a college educated individual who can write and speak well, solve problems, learn new information quickly and work well with others on a team. This means that college graduates use their education in a wide variety of fields, and your future career may relate more to your personal career interests, work values and transferable skills than any specific academic major. However, the following list contains a representative sample of current job titles of former Business Systems majors.Use this as an idea list, and remember that it represents some, but certainly not all, of the careers you might consider. Students obtaining employment immediately upon graduation are usually those with the best college records and a willingness to relocate to find a job. Some of these jobs also require education beyond the bachelors level.
