May We Help You? A Guide for Parents with Students in Special Education Many times the parent of students served by special education are unsure about whom they should contact when questions or concerns arise. The information provided is intended to foster effective communication between parents and school district personnel. Most questions and concerns are specific to your child and your home school. Contact with your child's teacher should always be your first step. If your child's teacher is not able to answer your questions or address your concerns, then the principal is the person in the best position to help you. Support Teams - Each special education program in the Richardson ISD is supported by a team of professionals who work directly with school personnel. These teams are also ready to work with you and your family to tailor a program designed to meet your student's needs. Community Resources - Parents of students with disabilities may find that interaction with other parents or support groups, is helpful in providing insights into the challenges faced by their children.

This law guarantees a free appropriate public education to children with disabilities. The tips and suggestions on the following pages will help you obtain special education and related services for your child.
