1. General Information The aim of the SFL Program at the University of Costa Rica is to provide non-Spanish speaking students with such a degree of competence in Spanish as to allow them to fulfill, quickly and efficiently, their communication needs in both speaking and writing.
The SFL Program is taught by a team of native-speaking university professors with degrees in either Spanish Philology or Linguistics. It utilizes suitable didactic materials and technological facilities.
An essential part of the SFL Program is to teach the relevant aspects of the hispanic culture, in general, and the Costa Rican culture, in particular, so that the student can learn how to speak Spanish by close interaction with the country's historical and social backgrounds. The student has the opportunity to fully experience university life: to attend lectures, cultural events, and to interact with native speakers. After enrollment, a student card is issued; it allows him/her to use the university's campus sport facilities and to receive price discounts in some art events. Lodging in the house of a Costa Rican family, near the university, is available for an approximate monthly expenditure of $350. At the request of the student, a list will be supplied.

115. The Boom In Spanish American Literature
An overview of this Jose Donoso's book by Alexander Coleman.

Prose The Boom In Spanish American Literature:A Personal History
Jose Donoso
New York: Colombia University Press by Alexander Coleman At Harvard in the late fifties, I took a course entitled "Masterpieces of Spanish American Literature." With some honorable, even sensational exceptions, there weren't many masterpieces on the reading list, though I was moved by the passion and determination of the teacher, the late and unforgettable Edward Glaser. At graduate school (Columbia), the same thing. Many weak novels were acclaimed as masterpieces from Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, and so on. I thought it odd that in an age of Proust, Joyce, and Mann, students of Spanish American literature would be handed works that could best be described as examples of literary regionalism, sometimes with a glossary at the end so that the particular national character inherent in the work would be revealed by means of words unique to the region. But it was not just the vocabulary that was irritating: it was the moving force that could at times be felt behind the texts themselves - Zolaesque documentation, noble populism, the idea of literature as a weapon. with which to pummel the Wall Street jackals. So while my classmates in Comp. Lit were delving into Gide, Proust, Joyce Mann, Kafka, and the then reigning John Hawkes, we dutiful majors in Span. Am. Lit. were trying to cope with Mariano Axuela's

119. Argentine Literature, Literatura Argentina, Don Segundo Sombra, Ricardo Guiralde
Ricardo G¼iraldes's novel, Don Segundo Sombra . Overview and a passage translated from spanish to English language.
http://www.ompersonal.com.ar/shortstories/donsegundosombra.htm
Don Segundo Sombra Ricardo Güiraldes The meaning of highlighted words is explained at the end of the passage.
Al final del pasaje se detalla el significado de las palabras resaltadas. Ricardo Güiraldes, the author of the piece you are going to read, was born in Buenos Aires on February 8, 1886.
In his father's country estate, La Porteña, in the province of Buenos Aires, Güiraldes had known and loved a typical man of our country whose character inspired him to write his inmortal book Don Segundo Sombra
In his book, which is full of the virile and rough spirit of our gaucho, he tells us "the story of a boy", says Waldo Frank, "who, like boys the world over, learns to become a man by taking life humbly and bravely".
Some ten blocks away from the central square, in the outskirts of the little village, the old bridge extends its arch over the river and joins the "quintas" to the quiet fields beyond.
That day I had come, as I often did
