spanish literature. Spanish and Spanish American Literature form an integral part of all the courses in Spanish at St. Thomas University.
http://www.stthomasu.ca/~rgmoore/courses/spanlit.htm
SPANISH LITERATURE Spanish and Spanish American Literature form an integral part of all the courses in Spanish at St. Thomas University. In fact, readings from important authors are included at all levels and in all courses offered within the Spanish Curriculum. As a result, in Spanish, we do not set literature upon a pedestal. Rather, we include it as a normal part of the daily reading and cultural program in which we involve our students. Quite simply, for us in Spanish, literature is a normal part of our daily lives. This is one of our distinguishing features. Literature figures prominently in the upper levels of Spanish, not so much as a subject to be taught in class, but as a series of interest areas in which individual students can, with assistance from faculty, conduct their own explorations. These special interest areas are often taught by means of independent stuy courses. Independent studies will vary for each professor and each student. In my own case, a student will express an interest in one of the areas in which I specialize (usually Golden Age Spanish Literature or poetry in Spanish) and will propose to me a topic to be followed. If the student's interests and mine coincide, then together we will work out a reading program and a marking system for the independent studies course. Literature courses that I personally have taught in previous years include the following courses offered as part of the regular Spanish Syllabus:

59. FORWARD : FacesForward
Bringing spanish literature to Life — in English. By MAX GROSS Who is this prominent translator of spanish literature into English?
http://www.forward.com/issues/2004/04.01.23/faces.html
JANUARY 23, 2004 current issue back issues subscribe
By MAX GROSS Now Grossman is also Sancho Panza to the original Don Quixote. Who is this prominent translator of Spanish literature into English? The person behind these great authors is a Jewish woman from Philadelphia who lives on Manhattan's Upper West Side. "A lot of translators are Jews," Grossman told the Forward. She casually ticked off Jewish translators of Spanish and Latin American literature: Eliot Weinberger is the primary translator of the great Mexican poet, Octavio Paz; Suzanne Jill Levine has translated Jorge Luis Borges and Guillermo Cabrera Infante; Asa Zata was the translator of "Ballad of Another Time" by Jose Luis Gonzalez and Juan Alcazar. Why the large numbers of Jews in translation? Call it the Jewish fascination with migrating to new lands and acclimating to new cultures. "Jews do that a lot," Grossman said. Grossman can list Jewish authors published in Spanish who have yet to be introduced to the English-speaking world, such as Marcelo Birmajer. She also can inveigh on different theories about Cervantes's Jewish connection. (Some scholars believe he is descended from a family of conversos ; Grossman explained that "many writers from 16th-century Spain came from converso families.")
