blancoiglesi@macalester.edu General Information Course description This course aims at introducing students to the basic structures and vocabulary of Spanish and helping them develop the necessary skills to be able to communicate well in Spanish. Following the basic principles of the 'Natural Approach', students will experience language learning in a communicative environment. Thus, the objective is to encourage and trigger natural language production through three basic stages: (a) comprehension, (b) early speech production and (c) speech emergence. This course also challenges students to think and react to questions and situations which require them to draw on their own background and their own experiences. Students will also gain knowledge and understanding of the rich similarities and differences of the various Spanish speaking peoples and cultures. Course format This course meets three times a week with the instructor and one extra "fourth hour" with the Language Assistant(s). Since the course is interactive, attendance is required for all four sessions, including the "fourth hour". Specific oral and written activities will be periodically assigned and due as agreed to be graded. Students are responsible for turning in or presenting them on time. Late homework will not be accepted. The text chosen for this course (

Español Dr. Whitley This is a general version of the course syllabus for Spa. 154 at Wake Forest University; details may change from semester to semester. NOTE to student: This is an accelerated intermediate course; like 153, it prepares you for the next level of study (Spa. 213) but is designed for those who show more strength in the language and do not require as much intensive practice. If you placed into a higher-level Spanish course, you are expected to start at that level. To drop to a lower level (including from 154 to 153), you must appeal your placement to the departmental placement appeals officer (Dr. Whitley) and obtain permission; otherwise, you will not receive credit for that lower course. TEXTS ¿Qué te parece? (Lee et al., 2 nd ed.) and its workbook, Manual and CD-ROM. Always bring the main textbook with you to class. The Manual is mainly for out-of-class work, but is more than just a workbook: it also presents much of the grammar that is to be studied for the course. You will also need an adequate Spanish dictionary for this class and higher-level ones. The department recommends (1)

If you signed up for this level without that permission, you will not receive credit for this course.
TEXTS Interacciones Always bring the text with you to class. You may also wish to buy an adequate Spanish dictionary for this class and higher-level ones.
