Rationale: Spanish 307 is an intensive writing course in Spanish designed around a networked computer classroom. The sub-theme of this class is "Homenaje a la mujer hispana." This semester will engage in numerous writing and revision activities designed to improve your conceptualization and completion of written work in Spanish; several of the activities will be centered around the sub-theme of the class. You will write and revise a variety of types of compositions, building descriptive, narrative, summary, analytical and argumentative styles. This course should maximize your learning through writing, by asking you to write often, write thoughtfully and write in a variety of formats. Not all of your writing will be for a grade; your audience may be your professor, other students, yourself, or interested computer users on the World Wide Web. Writing Techniques and Strategies: The compositions will build in length and complexity as the semester progresses; but remember thatwriting in a foreign language is by its nature more problematical, and you must seek to renderphrases simply and elegantly. Do not translate from English! That is perilous and ponderous. Useforms that are familiar to you, and use them simply, thinking about tense andperson. Reach to improve your Spanish by working from what you know. Use the dictionary, but do so sparingly and carefully to be certain you have the correct part of speech and usage. Your written skills in Spanish will develop with practice, but they will not soon approach those of English; therefore, yourprecision and clarity must compensate to some extent. The overall emphasis is on realistic, practical situations that could prove useful to the student. The modified section of Spanish 1020 is designed for students who have difficulty learning a foreign language. It will be taught using methods recommended for students with this type of difficulty. This course will place even greater emphasis on listening and speaking than the other courses, and will introduce grammatical structures more slowly, more selectively, and with more opportunity to practice them. Despite the modified pace and curriculum, the course is demanding. Plan to dedicate to it at least two hours daily outside of class, and more time on weekends. You must meet with the course tutor once a week outside of class. Set up a regular schedule with the tutor, and keep it. The meetings are obligatory and absences will be recorded and counted when calculating your participation grade. Experience has shown that working regularly with the tutor can improve student grades and reinforce progress in the language. The tutor will help with specific difficulties you are having, or problem areas the instructor wants you to concentrate on.     Course Description and Goals

    Spanish 201 is an intermediate level Spanish course designed for students who have taken the Spanish 101/102 sequence at this university or who have placed beyond the elementary level according to standard testing. The course has two equally important components, each with its own instructor: a Monday/Wednesday/Friday class, which focuses on Spanish grammar and culture, and a Tuesday/Thursday class, which focuses on literature and advanced writing skills. The TTh class is designed for a smaller number of students in order to facilitate student interaction. Both classes will emphasize vocabulary development. While the MWF instructor is the main instructor for the course, both instructors work together to integrate the various course components. Each instructor is responsible for different aspects of grading, as indicated in the syllabus. This course has several goals:

    There are two main goals of this course: (1) to help students improve their ability to communicate orally in Spanish; (2) to enable students to improve their writing skills in Spanish. To meet these goals students will participate in a wide variety of tasks incorporating communication strategies, vocabulary and grammar practice, as well as increase their awareness of Hispanic cultures through readings and other activities.
    Course policies
    • After January 22 nd withdrawals must be approved by the instructor. Withdrawals will be allowed only in exceptional cases. Incomplete grades will not be given unless it is a case of severe hardship wherein the student cannot complete the work in the allotted time. The student may be required to document his/her request with medical or other rationale. Students are responsible for documenting absences and arranging to complete missed coursework.

    Course Description Objectives:
    By following the sequence of previewing, watching the programs, and reviewing with exercises in the text, you should be able to:
    • Interact in Spanish in oral and written form sufficiently well to carry out a range of real-world functions, such as greeting others, describing yourself and your surroundings, taking care of everyday needs such as arranging for housing, planning a career and obtaining a job, etc., expressing your opinion about a range of topics, narrating and reporting about past, present and future events. Comprehend Spanish sufficiently well to be able to extract the main points and some supporting details from basic conversations, television and radio broadcasts, and newspaper and magazine articles about familiar topics.
